  • Body Perception and Social Touch Preferences in Times of Grief
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of loss & trauma. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC. - 1532-5024 .- 1532-5032.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grief is a core human experience. The time following the loss of a loved one is associated with an increased risk for negative health outcomes. Yet, only a few studies investigate bodily consequences of grief and consoling behaviors, specifically the potentially supportive role of interpersonal touch during grief. We conducted an online-study where participants filled in questionnaires and rated videos of short touch gestures and interactions. People who lost a loved one within the last 2 years were asked about their grief experiences and to rate the different types of touch from the perspective of a receiver. People who had not lost a close person in the last 2 years rated the touch from the perspective of providing touch to a grieving individual. The majority of the recent-loss sample reported to have perceived their own body and bodily states less after the loss. Two-thirds reported feeling the presence of the deceased at least once. Grief-sensations were experienced mostly in the chest and upper body, the same areas where the consoling effect of a hug was perceived. Overall, the recent-loss group reported amounts of wanting of the vicarious touch gestures similar to the endorsement by people taking the active touching perspective. However, discrepancies between groups were found for some types of touch, including slow affective stroking. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the body and bodily interactions like social touch in grief and consolation. Our findings can be seen as a first point of reference on how to interact with grieving individuals and could contribute to novel interventions for individuals with prolonged grief disorder.

  • Defining a Risk Group and Ageism in the Era of COVID-19
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of loss & trauma. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC. - 1532-5024 .- 1532-5032. ; 25:8, s. 631-634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By classifying older adults, based on chronological age, as a higher risk group of coronavirus disease, 2019 is unacceptable and unfair- potentially reinforcing ageism. This ageist approach can accelerate the risk of social isolation, and heightened levels of psychosocial distress. Moreover, a general calculation of the number that is generated merely from the case fatality rate surely will mislead the indicators of the epidemics trajectory, and lead to another infodemic. Therefore, transparency in news dissemination, the underlying health conditions and cultural differences of older adults are essential aspects while defining a risk group.

  • Loss and Trauma among HIV/AIDS Workers Working with Children
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of loss & trauma. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1532-5024 .- 1532-5032. ; 20:4, s. 374-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this discourse analytic article I illustrate, first, how a group of HIV/AIDS workers working with children constructed such children as innocent and suffering the loss of an ideal childhood, and second, how the HIV/AIDS workers held adults accountable for the children's loss of an ideal childhood. I conclude the article by proposing that, given that inflicted interpersonal traumas are considered more harmful, the implication of participants’ constructions for HIV/AIDS workers is a potentially perpetuated emotional strain and traumatic experience.

  • The Associations between Risky Psychosocial Environment, Substance Addiction Severity and Imprisonment: A Swedish Registry Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Substance Use & Misuse. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1082-6084 .- 1532-2491. ; 55:5, s. 697-706
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Both childhood and adult psychosocial stressors have been identified as links to both increased risk for substance use disorder (SUD) and increased risk of imprisonment. The aim of this retrospective study is to identify, for a sample of 14,914 adults who all were assessed for risky substance use or a SUD, the importance of having a history of psychosocial stressors compared to current addiction severity. The analyses control for age, gender and education on the likelihood of future imprisonment. Method: Baseline Addiction Severity Index data (ASI) were merged with national registry data on prison sentences from 2003 to 2016. In the analysis, a Cox regression was used to study the association between independent variables and the likelihood of future imprisonment. Results: In the regression, five variables showed significant association to increased risk of imprisonment: ASI drugs other than alcohol Composite Score (positive relationship), ASI alcohol Composite Score (negative relationship), age (younger), education (lower) and parental problems with drugs other than alcohol. The factor with strongest association with imprisonment was the ASI drugs other than alcohol Composite Score, which showed the highest HR = 10.63 (3.50–32.31) for women and HR = 5.52 (3.77–8.08) for men to predict the likelihood of imprisonment. Discussion: Research is needed on why individuals with history of psychosocial stressors have a higher likelihood of imprisonment compared to their counterparts. Findings indicate that a high ASI Composite Score for drugs other than alcohol are strong predictors of future criminality and criminal justice system involvement.
