  • Corporate Supply Chain Responsibility: Drivers and Barriers for Sustainable Food Retailing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley. - 1535-3966 .- 1535-3958. ; 22:2, s. 65-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper aims to provide a systematic overview of the drivers and barriers for food retailers to implement corporate supply chain responsibility. The research is based on a literature analysis and semi-structured interviews with food retailers, with primary focus on Swedish conventional supermarket chains. The paper contributes to the existing body of research by providing the food retailers’ own perspective on the factors that trigger addressing sustainability concerns in their supply chain and by providing a taxonomy of drivers and barriers. As a result, a number of additional factors that influence the launch of responsible supply chain practices have been identified. Interestingly some of these factors are beyond the trivial driver-barrier dichotomy. This paper is of interest to food retailers who aim to design sustainable supply chain strategies and justify associated investments, and for policymakers who aim to support retailers in their transition towards sustainable practices.

  • Sustainable development—Direct and indirect effects between economic, social, and environmental dimensions in business practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - Oxford : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 29:5, s. 1158-1172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the direct and indirect effects between economic, social and environmental dimensions of triple bottom line (TBL), based on a questionnaire survey and cross-industrial sample in Sweden. The analyses apply partial least squares structural equation models. The study tests the direct and indirect effects between economic, social, and environmental dimensions of TBL and offers additional validity and reliability to establish the measurement and structural properties between the dimensions of TBL. The study extends earlier findings by explicitly discussing how the three TBL goals relate to each other and shows how the dynamic capability view can be a fruitful lens to investigate business sustainability. Some differences in sustainability business practices caused by differences in national cultures are identified. Sustainability reporting in a strong uncertainty avoidance (UA) country happens in accordance with regulations and laws. Conversely, for weak UA cultures, reporting and compliance with regulations are ways to build trust with stakeholders. That is, reporting is more transparent and widespread in weak UA countries. The study also provides a foundation to guide companies' actions of business sustainability. The model shows companies how to establish the order of actions undertaken across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. In addition, it clarifies that the economic dimension exerts an effect on the social and environmental dimensions. The model also grasps long-term economic performance by including competitiveness and brand value, while earlier research mainly has focused on more short-term measurements as return on assets. © 2022 The Authors. • Fordlândia: Corporate Citizenship or Corporate Colonialism
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 19:2, s. 69-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case focuses on the social dimension of a large-scale plantation project of Ford Motors Company in Brazil. With its Fordlândia plantation, Henry Ford aimed to trigger an industrial revolution in the Amazon basin just like he had done in the United States two decades earlier. However, upon arrival, the company encountered unforeseen challenges linked to the attempted export of the Ford way of thinking and doing business – that had worked so well at home in Michigan – into the remote and underdeveloped Amazon basin. Yet, when failure became clear, the company decided to buy a new stretch of land nearby with the intent of reconsidering its way of doing business at the plantation. At its new operations, the company needed to better balance the trade-off between its own core values and those of its local workforce. The case is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate management courses as well as a wider audience.

  • Managing Stakeholders or the Environment? : The Challenge of Relating Indicators in Practice
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 16:1, s. 27-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many organizations present their environmental work in the form of annual reports and use the indicators in them for follow-up. However, internal communication and management is needed for environmental improvements. The indicators found in reports may be suitable for external communication, but are they also suitable internally and operationally? This article reviews the existing literature on environmental indicators.  With the help of an operational approach, from organisation theory, and a life-cycle approach, indicators are analysed. The analysis shows that formulating indicators for internal management is not an easy task; available guidelines are of little help. It is concluded that the environment can be managed internally by relating indicators. Therefore, an additional set of indicators for internal management and a wider responsibility for the life cycle are recommended. The analysis and recommendations are illustrated with examples drawn from the field of property management.

  • Can B Corp certification anchor sustainability in SMEs?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley. - 1535-3966 .- 1535-3958. ; 29:1, s. 293-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • B Corp certification is considered a viable instrument to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adopting sustainable practices. However, there is a lack of evidence to what extent this instrument can anchor sustainability at the core of SMEs. This study investigates the B Corp certification process of a SME, a craft brewery in southern Sweden, regarding the extent to which it helped infusing sustainability into the business’ mission, practices, corporate form, certificates, and capacities. Results show that the B Impact Assessment, as part of the certification process, positively influenced the business’ mission, practices, and capacities. Limited influence on social commitment and adoption of a sustainable corporate form can be explained through regulatory context and time required for deep organizational change. To enhance the effectiveness of B Corp certification, we recommend making it even more adaptable to different geographical and social contexts and increase focus on impact business models.

  • Exploring Diffusion and Dynamics of Corporate Social Responsibility
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - Chichester, West Sussex : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 22:3, s. 129-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore the evolution of the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in academia. The process of evolution is conceptualised to consist of diffusion and dynamics. Bibliometrics were applied for data collection and visualisation of the evolution of CSR. The findings show increasing complexity and progression in the research on the concept of CSR fuelled not only by the efforts for intellectual refinement in the field but also reflecting the changing priorities of society and businesses. The growth of this field of research both in number of publications (i.e. diffusion) and in terms of different fields in academic usage (i.e. dynamics), is an indicator for growing complexity and widening acceptance of the CSR concept across various academic disciplines in the future. • Corporate Social Responsibility : Discourse, Narratives and Communication
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 17:2, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problematic and contestable nature of discourses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has driven the commissioning of this special issue on discourses, narratives, and communication about CSR. While CSR may be seen as sharing normative goals with the concept of sustainable development, there are fundamental questions to be asked about the nature and purpose of CSR, how it has been constructed and framed, and whether it promotes the normative goals of sustainable development in order to effect change to the business-as-usual model. The teasing out of the different discourses of CSR has become an important theme in academic research in recent years. In this issue, that discourse is developed. The authors discover gaps between CSR as understood by civil society groups and radical non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the CSR norms promoted at corporate level. The latter fail to impact on business-as-usual, even though the same lan- guage may be used. The link between Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting and market-value is explored; and CSR principles and actions promoted by business are cri- tiqued from the perspective of the norms of sustainable development, one conclusion being that the parameters of sustainable development as a concept need to be extended to include the dimension of culture.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility and Developing Countries
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 16:5, s. 237-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws attention to several corporate social responsibility (CSR) questions in developing countries. (1) Illustrations from, for example, South America and Africa, includ- ing African voices critical to foreign aid, show that societies are different in many respects. This implies different capacities of organizations and their managers to understand and address pressing CSR issues in different cultural contexts. (2) Weak institutional environ- ments, such as in developing countries, often harbor illicit fi nancial outfl ow from poor countries to rich ones. This strips developing nations of critical resources and contributes to failed states, a point hardly ever discussed in the CSR literature. We argue for corporate actions in areas such as enhancing capacity in detecting tax fraud, antitrust and the unveil- ing of corruption cases. Obviously, legislation is a task of politicians, governments and international governmental bodies. However, if business enterprises can ‘legally misuse’ the system, then the matter should be seen as a CSR issue also. There is thus an urgency for concerted efforts by the private sector, public sector and non-governmental organiza- tions to develop structures and institutions that contribute to social justice, environmental protection and poverty eradication.

  • The UN Global Compact and the Enlightenment tradition: A rural electrification project under the aegis of the UN Global Compact
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 16:5, s. 264-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite extensive academic debate as to what CSR and other related concepts ought to encompass, there is a lack of critical analysis of what CSR in practice entails, i.e. what actually constitutes CSR practices. This paper critically addresses this question by focusing on one of the most influential CSR initiatives – the UN Global Compact. We demonstrate that the Global Compact principles are rooted in a European Enlightenment tradition and, based on a study of an Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) CSR project in a Tanzanian village, we illustrate how these Global Compact principles translate into corporate projects that challenge local institutions, while leaving the underlying Global Compact principles unquestioned. The paper concludes by opening a space for discussing the desirability of the Enlightenment tendencies manifested in Global Compact projects.
