  • Concepts on Zakat, Caritas, and Diaconia in the changing social welfare landscape of Europe
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work: Social Thought. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1542-6432 .- 1542-6440. ; 36:1-2, s. 164-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article will enhance the understanding of Zakat’s contribution to social welfare provision in the changing social welfare landscape of Europe. It will contribute to the understanding of emerging Zakat within the framework of the welfare regimes in Europe in relation to the more established forms of Caritas and Diaconia. Data was gathered from the Welfare and Value (WaVe) research program in 13 cities and 12 countries 2005–2009. The research was conducted through observation and in-depth research with a descriptive approach to the complexity of majority–minority relations in each town, followed by an analytical phase which addressed various factors in relation to social cohesion, values, minorities, and gender. In this article, the data from the WaVe study was coded and analyzed, mainly to explore the way Zakat is implemented in the European context and within the framework of different contextual welfare regimes using Esping-Andersen typology and Van der Ven institutional model on religious & social identity. The results confirm the dominant role of Caritas and Diaconia but with emerging & innovative Zakat in some countries and a marginal role in mainly Eastern Europe. Zakat is also becoming and alternative & complimentary welfare provision model in Germany, France, and Croatia.

  • Shrinking Religious Communities and Thriving Interreligious Social Work in Postsecular Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work: Social Thought. - Washington DC : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1542-6432 .- 1542-6440. ; 34:1, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is considered to be one of the most secular countries when measuring items such as church service attendance, expressed beliefs in God, and agreement with statements such as “religion is an important part of life,” compared to other countries in Europe and elsewhere. Official church attendance in major church congregations, such as the Church of Sweden and most other Protestant Free Churches, has shown a pattern of decrease in membership in modern times, with some congregations risking to disappear as a result. New configurations of social work practice are challenging current congregations with crossover-interfaith schemes, shared buildings, and community-oriented services with a field presence in marginalized urban areas, replacing homogeneous and diaconal or charitable work. Three cases of interreligious social work are analyzed, and in particular the social and religious leadership skills required for collaboration between the religious communities as well as the surrounding society. The interreligious social work practice is also an important factor of social service provision in the concerned local communities and has strengthened the role of religion in the social sphere in what can be expressed as a postsecular Sweden.

  • Existential social work and the quest for existential meaning and well-being : A conceptual framework
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1542-6432 .- 1542-6440. ; 37:1, s. 64-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to conceptualize “existential social work.” A greater understanding of what existential social work means may enable social workers and those studying social work to see how its practice can reveal “the truth” about human existence and how they, as professionals, can enhance existential meaning and existential well-being among their clients. In such work, existential social workers have at their disposal tools such as the Frankl therapeutic approach to existential analysis (i.e., logotherapy) as well as spiritual-sensitive modalities (prayer and mindfulness). To interpret and understand apparent phenomena in the therapy is the ultimate goal with existential social work practices, thus providing clients with the opportunity to discover the meaning that exists in themselves. In addition, these practices pave the way for existential well-being.

  • From Buddhist sati to Western mindfulness practice : A contextual analysis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work. - : Routledge. - 1542-6432 .- 1542-6440. ; 35:1-2, s. 7-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last three decades the practice of mindfulness has grown to become one of the most widespread health promoting applications in the West—so much that terms like yoga and meditation have now become standard household words. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the meaning of mindfulness within both its Buddhist and its Western context. In the former case, the aim will be to shed light on mindfulness as a concept and practice that is rooted in Buddhist understandings (i.e., the Buddhist perspective); and in the latter case, the meaning of mindfulness will be more broadly explored in terms of its relevance to society, social work and everyday life (i.e., the social (work) perspective).

  • Social workers as an action-oriented sociotherapist : an existential health discourse
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1542-6432 .- 1542-6440. ; 41:4, s. 425-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to reinvigorate sociotherapy by contextualizing its practice within a logotherapeutic and an existential health discourse. This approach is used to enhance meaningfulness in life within the framework of a sociotherapy, through mindfulness practices such as body scanning, and greenspace activities such as walking and gardening. This discourse has been largely inspired by: 1) sociotherapy’s capacity to facilitate existential health; 2) the international research community’s struggle for a broader concept of health; 3) World Health Organization’s concept of existential health; and, 4) Frankl’s assertion that people must be understood holistically as physical, psychological, social, this paper is to reinvigorate and spiritual beings. This paper approaches the social worker as sociotherapist (SWS) from an ecological and systemic perspective, the aim being to move the client from an egoistic to a mindful and ecological mind-set.
