  • Studying El Sistema as a Swedish community music project from a critical perspective
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect. - 1550-7327 .- 1752-6299 .- 1752-6302. ; 7:3, s. 365-377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden has a long tradition of implementing cultural activities in community-based organizations, even though the concept of community music is rarely used. One project in line with this tradition is El Sistema, a global movement that reached Sweden a few years ago. This article aims to discuss to what extent and in what ways El Sistema in Sweden can be regarded as an example of community music practice and further to argue for a critical approach when analysing this particular music education venture. By using discursive tools we try to move beyond preconceptions based on educational and cultural beliefs. In addition, a critical perspective also makes it possible to pay attention to what is at stake in a specific music education context.

  • Unfreezing identities: Exploring choral singing in the workplace
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect. - 1752-6299 .- 1752-6302. ; 8, s. 163-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2015, Intellect Ltd Article. The topic of this article is the emerging trend of singing at work. The discussion is exemplified by results from case studies of singing interventions carried out at two different work places. The research comprised group interviews, participant observation and questionnaires. Our phenomenological and hermeneutic approach focuses mainly on the employees’ experience of singing at work. The analysis was driven by thematic coding. The discussion is illuminated mainly by Etienne Wenger’s community of practice theory. The following research questions were developed: how do the members of a workplace community experience choral singing? What implications do the participants see for themselves as individuals and for the organization? We identified four axes of impact: enjoyment, comfort zone, communality, and identity and roles. A workplace choir can challenge perceptions about how collegues view each other and transform individual identities. Consequently, the choir may also change the workplace as a practice community.

  • Stories and the life cabaret – dwelling and becoming in music : Creation of a multi art dance performance among people over 65
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1752-6299 .- 1752-6302. ; 13:3, s. 283-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to describe and analyze what aspects of musical learning that constitute the process of developing a collective artistic life story among twenty amateur dancers over 65 years old. In earlier studies it was established that organized aesthetic communication offered participants to develop physically, emotionally and existentially. Based on these results regarding participation in dance workshops for elderly people, the current study focuses musical learning and further development during one year towards a performance on stage. The aim of the study is to describe how the musical learning proceeds throughout the project, where a series of workshops, consisting of training, choreography and improvisation, leads towards a common performance built on the participants’ life stories. The study takes Heidegger’s existential phenomenology as a starting-point. Hence, it can be stated that the participants and the choreographer dwell and learn together in musical situations, where music is discovered and expressed at the same time. Dwelling took place in workshops, rehearsals and performances, which were observed and video recorded regularly from May 2017 to May 2018. A sample of the participants was also interviewed. Generated material was analyzsed from a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective. The results imply that the elderly people become themselves through movement in the different musical rooms. Crucial factors seem to be how they get to use themselves, each other, their bodies, their stories, their personal artistic forms of expressions, and their imaginations, in interplay with music. Not least the atmosphere of playful seriousness, which is set and recreated throughout the year, can be stated as important for meaningful musical dwelling and a prerequisite for becoming among the elderly participants.

  • Amateur orchestras as a learning environment for music academy students
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1752-6299 .- 1752-6302. ; 13:1, s. 49-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orchestral playing is a common form of ensemble playing within higher music education. However, students sometimes participate in amateur orchestras outside of their formal education. This study focuses on what students learned by participating and what the educational institutions gained. The study is a case study of a music education institution and four amateur orchestras and consisted of eight interviews with conductors and administrators. The study shows that learning in the amateur orchestra is similar to learning in formal education contexts, such as developing knowledge of repertoire, in which both institutions contribute to the student's overall knowledge. Nevertheless, some aspects are better learnt outside of formal education such as educational roles, the creation of a professional identity as a musician and knowledge of different social contexts.

  • Community music as folkbildning: A study of a finnish cultural association in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect. - 1752-6299 .- 1752-6302. ; 10:1, s. 45-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the relationship between community music, folkbildning and music making in Sweden. This is exemplified by a case study of a Finnish association in contemporary Sweden. The article takes, as its point of departure, the specific question: what meaning do musical activities have for its participants in the context of a Finnish association in Sweden? Informants from the Finnish association consist of members of a senior dance group (65–80 years old) and a music group (50–65 years old). The fieldwork and methodological approach is inspired by the ethnographic tradition, and the methods of data collection involve qualitative semi-structured interviews in groups, as well as field notes. The findings reveal that dancing is the main activity in the association and through dance activities the participants (as adult beginners) started to play instruments within the association’s framework. This process promotes life-long musical learning and strengthened health. The participants’ migration experiences in combination with the musical activities in the association have an impact on their individual and collective identities, and their participation in a musical community develops a sense of purpose, empowerment and autonomy. © 2017 Intellect Ltd Article.

  • Seven decades of Swedish community music through the musical life experiences of former military musician
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Community Music. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1550-7327 .- 1752-6299. ; 10:1, s. 7-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the life-long trajectories of musical learning and participation amongst former military musicians, and how their musical and educational experiences spanning over 70 years, relate to community music practices in Sweden. The central questions are: Which factors seem to have formed the informants’ life-long engagement in music? How do their musical and educational experiences over these 70 years relate to community music practices in Sweden today? The army was one of the few contexts through which the vast majority of individuals could obtain free music tuition in the mid-twentieth century, and the article draws from interviews with five former military musicians who are now in their 80s. Their musical experiences, combined with educational aspects and goals informed by democratic values, mirror various characteristics of the formation of the Swedish welfare model during the second half of the twentieth century. Community music activities in Sweden often occurs in the specific interplay between top-down funded infrastructure and grassroots’ initiatives, and this article also highlights’ the role of these musicians in that particular context.

  • MHC class I recognition by NK receptors in the Ly49 family is strongly influenced by the beta 2-microglobulin subunit
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950). - : The American Association of Immunologists. - 0022-1767 .- 1550-6606. ; 166:12, s. 7327-7334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NK cell recognition of targets is strongly affected by MHC class I specific receptors. The recently published structure of the inhibitory receptor Ly49A in complex with H-2Dd revealed two distinct sites of interaction in the crystal. One of these involves the α1, α2, α3, and β2-microglobulin (β2m) domains of the MHC class I complex. The data from the structure, together with discrepancies in earlier studies using MHC class I tetramers, prompted us to study the role of the β2m subunit in MHC class I-Ly49 interactions. Here we provide, to our knowledge, the first direct evidence that residues in the β2m subunit affect binding of MHC class I molecules to Ly49 receptors. A change from murine β2m to human β2m in three different MHC class I molecules, H-2Db, H-2Kb, and H-2Dd, resulted in a loss of binding to the receptors Ly49A and Ly49C. Analysis of the amino acids involved in the binding of Ly49A to H-2Dd in the published crystal structure, and differing between the mouse and the human β2m, suggests the cluster formed by residues Lys3, Thr4, Thr28, and Gln29, as a potentially important domain for the Ly49A-H-2Dd interaction. Another possibility is that the change of β2m indirectly affects the conformation of distal parts of the MHC class I molecule, including the α1 and α2 domains of the heavy chain.
