  • How Fares the Entrepreneurial State? : Empirical Evidence of Mission-Led Innovation Projects Around the Globe
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers Inc.. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 19:8, s. 664-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While considerable efforts have been made to conceptualize and outline the theoretical and normative logic of mission-oriented innovation policies and the role of the entrepreneurial state, there is a stark lack of empirical studies concerning how missions are designed and executed, and when they may work or do not. This monograph reviews theoretical rationales for mission-oriented innovation policy and provides an empirical overview of 30 articles which together cover 51 concluded or ongoing missions from around the world. We synthetize varieties of mission formulations, actors involved, and analyze characteristics of missions described as more or less failed or successful. Among the projects analyzed, many do not fulfill common definitions of “innovation missions.” Missions related to technological or agricultural innovations seem more often successful than broader types of missions aimed at social or ecological challenges, and challenges in the governance and evaluation of missions remain unresolved in the literature. None of the mission cases contain a cost-benefit analysis or takes opportunity cost into consideration.

  • Entrepreneurship, knowledge, and economic growth
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 4:5, s. 451-533
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge plays a critical role in economic development, still our understanding of how knowledge is created, diffused and converted into growth, is fragmented and partial. The neoclassical growth models disregarded the entrepreneur and viewed knowledge as an exogenous factor. Contemporary current knowledge-based growth models have re-introduced the notion of the entrepreneur, however stripped of its most typical characteristics, and the diffusion of knowledge is kept exogenous. It implies that the predictions and policy conclusions derived from these models may be flawed. This paper reviews the literature that addresses the issues of knowledge creation, knowledge diffusion and growth, and the role attributed the entrepreneur in such dynamic processes. I will explore how these insights can be integrated into existing growth models and suggest a more thorough microeconomic foundations from which empirically testable hypotheses can be derived.

  • Pioneering Entrepreneurship Research : How, by Whom, and When
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: FOUNDATIONS AND TRENDS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP. - : Now Publishers Inc.. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 18:2, s. 77-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic thought on entrepreneurship goes at least as far back as to Richard Cantillon, Adam Smith and Jean-Baptiste Say in the 18th and 19th centuries, and by some accounts much further back. After being neglected throughout a large part of the 20th century, entrepreneurship research has risen to become one of the most forceful, dynamic and expansionary fields in social sciences, represented by variety of specialized journals and conferences and encompassing several academic sub-disciplines. This monograph attempts to provide an overview of primarily contemporary pioneers in entrepreneurship research who have been instrumental in defining, re-introducing and establishing entrepreneurship as a core research discipline through their seminal scientific endeavors. Besides of the founding fathers of entrepreneurship research, we have identified 45 pioneers from a list of several hundreds of potential candidates. Three of those made their most seminal contributions between the late 1940s and the late 1960s. The remaining 42 contemporary pioneers were decisive for the establishment of the research field. Our ambition is thus to provide answers to how, by whom and when these pioneering contributions were made. By necessity, given how large and diverse the field has become, many researchers and topics have been left out of this review. We humbly recognize that we may have left out researchers who deserve to be mentioned; nevertheless we feel confident that selection of scholars are all worthy pioneers in the entrepreneurship research field.

  • Developments in Strategic Entrepreneurship
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: FOUNDATIONS AND TRENDS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP. - : NOW PUBLISHERS INC. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 16:6, s. 444-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Now almost twenty years ago, strategic entrepreneurship emerged as a new and high-potential field of research at the crossroads of the entrepreneurship and strategic management literatures. In this review, we track the development of this new field of research to see whether it has lived up to the original promises. Based on the review of 131 articles that have appeared over the period 2001-2019, we conclude that strategic entrepreneurship research is yet to develop the coherence and momentum that will allow it to take off more emphatically. In the discussion, we outline a set of interrelated issues concerned with conceptual ambiguity, model boundaries, and consistency in the application of conceptual foundations which we believe have had an attenuating effect on past developments of the field. We conclude our review by identifying a number of avenues for future research, alongside a pressing need for producing firmer practical guidelines for how to effectively integrate the entrepreneurial and strategic aspects of management.

  • Small Firm Growth
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers Inc.. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 6:2, s. 69-166
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review and discuss the literature on small firm growth with an intention to provide a useful vantage point for new research studies regarding this important phenomenon. We first discuss conceptual and methodological issues that represent critical choices for those who research growth and which make it challenging to compare results from previous studies. The substantial review of past research is organized into four sections representing two smaller and two larger literatures. The first of the latter focuses on internal and external drivers of small firm growth. Here we find that much has been learnt and that many valuable generalizations can be made. However, we also conclude that more research of the same kind is unlikely to yield much. While interactive and non-linear effects may be worth pursuing it is unlikely that any new and important growth drivers or strong, linear main effects would be found. The second "large" literature deals with organizational life-cycles or stages of development. While deservedly criticized for unwarranted determinism and weak empirics this type of approach addresses problems of high practical and also theoretical relevance, and should not be shunned by researchers. We argue that with a change in the fundamental assumptions and improved empirical design, research on the organizational and managerial consequences of growth is an important line of inquiry. With this, we overlap with one of the "smaller" literatures, namely studies focusing on the effects of growth. We argue that studies too often assume that growth equals success. We advocate instead the use of growth as an intermediary variable that influences more fundamental goals in ways that should be carefully examined rather than assumed. The second "small" literature distinguishes between different modes or forms of growth, including, e.g., organic vs. acquisition-based growth, and international expansion. We note that modes of growth is an important topic that has been under studied in the growth literature, whereas in other branches of research aspects of it may have been studied intensely, but not primarily from a growth perspective. In the final section we elaborate on ways forward for research on small firm growth. We point at rich opportunities for researchers who look beyond drivers of growth, where growth is viewed as a homogenous phenomenon assumed to unambiguously reflect success, and instead focus on growth as a process and a multi-dimensional phenomenon, as well as on how growth relates to more fundamental outcomes.

  • Returnee Entrepreneurs : A Systematic Literature Review, Thematic Analysis, And Research Agenda
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends In Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers Inc.. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 16:4, s. 310-392
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Returnee entrepreneurs are individuals who return to their home country to start a new venture after studying or working abroad. Such individuals are argued to be key agents of growth and innovation in emerging economies. Hence, they have attracted interest from policy-makers and scholars. Our work systematically reviews and thematically analyzes the growing but still fragmented research stream on returnee entrepreneurs. Our work identifies, examines and synthesizes this theoretically, methodologically and thematically diverse research stream by inductively categorizing it into themes and thematic areas. Based on the findings, we provide a conceptual mapping of the phenomenon and discuss promising research opportunities that address a range of key questions pertaining to returnee entrepreneurs and their importance in emerging economies. We provide a comprehensive inventory, organization and evaluation of the research stream offering guidance for the design and positioning of future scholarly enquiry in this field. Our detailed discussion of theoretical lenses and research designs also extends to potential contributions to adjacent fields and underlying theories, that is, well beyond the specific domain of returnee entrepreneurship.

  • Competencies and Institutions Fostering High-growth Firms
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers Inc.. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 5:1, s. 1-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-growth firms (HGFs) are critical for net job creation and economic growth. We analyze HGFs using the theory of competence blocs, linking firm growth to property rights and the interaction of complementary expertise. Specifically, we discuss how the institutional framework affects the prevalence and performance of HGFs. Firm growth is viewed as resulting from the perpetual discovery and use of productive knowledge. A key element in this process is the competence bloc, a nexus of economic actors with complementary competencies that are vital in order to generate and commercialize novel ideas. The institutional framework determines the incentives for these individuals to acquire and utilize knowledge. We identify a number of institutions that foster the emergence of competence blocs and the creation of HGFs. In particular, our analysis points to the pivotal roles played by tax structures, labor market regulation, and the contestability of currently closed service markets. Finally, we characterize institutions beneficial for sclerotic or dynamic capitalism, respectively, depending on whether they provide a favorable environment for the emergence of competence blocs and the creation of HGFs.

  • The evolution of entrepreneurship as a scholarly field
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 16:2, s. 67-243
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last 50 years, entrepreneurship as a scientific field has grown significantly - from a small emerging venture in the 1970s to a global industry today with thousands of people around the world who consider themselves entrepreneurship scholars. In this fast growing field there is always a risk that our history will get lost, with consequences in terms of lack of knowledge accumulation and understanding of the concepts and theories that we use in our research. Research on entrepreneurship has a long history. In this review I will focus on the modern history of entrepreneurship research by describing and synthesizing the evolution of entrepreneurship as a scholarly field after the Second World War. The social and intellectual evolution of the field can be divided into five periods: the forerunners in mainstream disciplines, the formation of the field, the growth of entrepreneurship research, the golden era, and finally, the establishment of a scholarly field in its own right. Thus, to a large extent the evolution of entrepreneurship as a scientific field follows the path of Hambrick and Chen's model (2008) from marginalization of the topic in the Post Second World War period to differentiation, mobilization, academic legitimacy, and conversion of the field in the 2010s.

  • Knowledge-Intensive Innovative Entrepreneurship
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 14:6, s. 555-681
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interplay between innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurship constitutes a major driver of the economic, social and cultural development in modern societies and has major implications for public policy. To understand these broad trends, a novel literature on knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship has recently emerged. In this book we provide a presentation of the key concepts, the relevant empirical findings and the main specific insights. We take a Schumpeterian, evolutionary and innovation system view of entrepreneurship, knowledge and innovation. In the conceptual framework proposed in this book, knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurs are involved in the creation, diffusion and use of knowledge; introduce new products and technologies; draw resources and ideas from the innovation system in which they operate; and introduce change and dynamism into the economy. This volume provides detailed insights into the progress made in defining and understanding knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship both theoretically and empirically; in discussing the current analytical understanding and empirical evidence; and in proposing the key directions and topics for future research.
