  • Heart Failure Patients' Perceptions of Received and Wanted Information : A Cross-Sectional Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 28:3, s. 340-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to investigate heart failure patients’ perceptions of received and wanted information and to identify differences regarding received and wanted information in relation to sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. Patients with heart failure (n = 192) were recruited from six primary health care centers in Sweden. Data were collected by a postal questionnaire. A majority of the respondents had received information about the condition and the medication. Within primary health care, most respondents had been informed about medication. The respondents wanted more information about continued care and treatment, medication, and the condition. There were significant differences between sociodemographic groups concerning what information they wanted. Clinical nurses can support patients with heart failure by using evidence-based methods that strengthen the patients’ self-efficacy and by individualized information that increases patients’ knowledge and improves their self-care behaviors. Future studies are needed to identify informational needs of particular fragile groups of patients.

  • The experience of massage during chemotherapy treatment in breast cancer patients.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Clinical nursing research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 16:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to describe the experience of massage for breast cancer patients during chemotherapy treatment. Ten patients received massage at five occasions. They were interviewed and analysis was conducted using Giorgi's ideas of phenomenological research. The essential meaning of getting massage during chemotherapy was described as a retreat from the feeling of uneasiness toward chemotherapy. Results revealed five themes: the patients experienced distraction from the frightening experience, a turn from negative to positive, a sense of relaxation, a confirmation of caring, and finally they just felt good. In conclusion, the findings of this study show that massage offered a retreat from uneasy, unwanted, negative feelings connected with chemotherapy treatment. It is a treatment that can be added to the arsenal of treatment choices available to the oncological staff.

  • Being the next of kin of an adult person with muscular dystrophy
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 15:2, s. 86-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A chronic disorder affects all members of the family in various ways. The aim of this study is to elucidate the next of kin's (N= 36) experiences when an adult family member has muscular dystrophy. The relationships were partner (36%, n= 14), parent (18%, n= 7), child (21%, n= 8), sibling (15%, n= 6), and other relative (3%, n= 1). Latent content analysis is employed and involves an interpretation of the interviewtext. The results showthe meaning of being close to a person with muscular dystrophy through the themes that emerged: exposure of the family; the span between obligation and love; being vigilant, protective, and supportive; and striving for an ordinary life. This study reveals a need for healthcare staff to understand the next of kin's narrated meaning of changes when a family member has a progressive disease.

  • Adaptation Positions and Behavior Among Post–Myocardial Infarction Patients
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 18:2, s. 119-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores myocardial infarction patients' experiences of adaptation to illness consequences after one year, focusing on experiences of “the self.” The study sample consisted of 19 respondents (10 women, 9 men) who have suffered a first-time myocardial infarction. They were interviewed 1 year after the acute heart attack. A constant comparative method for grounded theory provided the strategies used for data collection and analysis. Codes emerged and memos clarified theoretical reflections. The resulting model was able to illustrate possible mechanisms underlying two different behaviors: self-modifying and self-protecting behavior. Four different adaptation positions were identified: put up with current health, struggle for health, ignore illness , and struggle against illness. These categories were related to two core categories: self-agency and coping with illness consequences . This model may clarify the different adaptive behavior observed among post—myocardial infarction patients.

  • Pediatric nurses' perception of support for families with children with congenital heart defects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - Thousand oaks : Sage Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 27:8, s. 950-966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to illuminate pediatric nurses' (PNs) perceptions of support for families with a child with a congenital heart defect. The study used a qualitative design with narrative interviews with eight PNs in Northern Sweden, and the interview data were analyzed with content analysis. The analysis revealed that the nurses perceive that letting the parents be involved in their child's care is of great importance in supporting the families. Although they have a paternalistic attitude to the families, they also stated that nurses should inform the parents about the care of the child, create a good relationship with the family, and build trust among all parties involved.

  • Support for Fathers of Children With Heart Defects
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 25:3, s. 254-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study was to illuminate the meanings of the lived experiences of support as disclosed by fathers of children with congenital heart defect (CHD). Narrative interviews were conducted individually with five fathers of children diagnosed with CHD. A phenomenological-hermeneutic method was used to interpret the verbatim transcribed narrative interviews. The meanings of the lived experiences of support for the fathers were identified in two themes and illustrate the fathers' feelings of being supported when being in a mutual relationship with others. A third theme illustrates the situation when support is absent. Our findings indicate that support for fathers of children with CHD might be best promoted by the philosophy of family-centered care.

  • Content of Orthopedic Patient Education Provided by Nurses in Seven European Countries
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 27:7, s. 770-789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients and their significant others education during the perioperative phase is an important and challenging aspect of care. This study explored the content of education provided by nurses to arthroplasty patients and their significant others. Data were collected with the Education of Patients-NURSE content (EPNURSE-Content), Received Knowledge of Hospital Patient (RKhp), and Received Knowledge of Significant Other (RKso) scales. The results showed that the content of education emphasized biophysiological and functional needs, differed between countries, and was related to how physically demanding nurses found their job to be and the amount of education provided. There is congruence between the received knowledge of patients and their significant others in relation to the content of education provided by nurses. The findings can support nurses in developing aid material for patients and significant others explaining the nature of education and advising them what to expect and how to optimize their participation in the process.

  • I have to Turn Myself Inside Out” : Caring for Immigrant Families of Children With Asthma
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : Sage Publications, Inc.. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 21:2, s. 224-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In multicultural societies, health care professionals encounter immigrant families of children with asthma. They play an important role in supporting these families, but few studies have focused on this phenomenon. The aim of the present study is to gain a broader understanding of the challenges health care professionals face in their encounters with non-Western immigrant parents of children with asthma. Seventeen professional caregivers were interviewed, and their narratives were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results show that health care professionals’ main challenges when encountering immigrant parents can be described by the theme, “Turning oneself inside out.” This theme is characterized by five categories: gender and professional issues, impact on professional relationships, communication challenges, unfamiliar disease and treatment perceptions, and time issues. The results highlight the importance of providing health care professionals with support and organizational conditions that increase opportunities to understand the unique situation of these families

  • Experiences With Family Health Conversations at Residential Homes for Older People
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 1552-3799. ; 25:5, s. 560-582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to highlight family members' experiences of participating in Family Health Conversation (FamHC), based on families in which a family member was living in a residential home for older people. A total of 10 families and 22 family members participated in evaluating family interviews 1 month after participating in FamHC. The interviews were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The main finding was being a part of FamHC increased family members' insights, understanding, and communication within the family. Getting confirmation from nurses was essential to cope with the new life situation, which also meant that they felt comfortable to partly hand over the responsibility for the older person who moved to the residential home. By being open and expressing their feelings, a bad conscience could be relieved. These findings showed that FamHC could be helpful for family members in adapting to this novel situation.

  • Influence of skin-to-skin contact and rooming-in on early mother-infant interaction: a randomized controlled trial
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Clinical nursing research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1552-3799 .- 1054-7738. ; 22:3, s. 310-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this research was to study influence of birth routines on mother–infant interaction at Day 4. The present research is part of a longitudinal study where mother–infant pairs were randomized by infant location and apparel. We intended to assess mother–infant interaction from videos filmed at Day 4. A protocol for the assessment/coding of the affective quality of maternal behaviors indicative of early mother–infant interaction was developed and interculturally validated. Results were compared with birth randomization, as to explain impact of birth practices. Findings indicate that separation and swaddling at birth interfered with mother–infant interaction during a breastfeeding session at Day 4; these mothers significantly demonstrated more roughness in their behaviors with their infants at Day 4. Results also show evidences of a sensitive period for separation after birth. Implications are to encourage immediate and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact at birth, and rooming-in during postpartum, as recommended in World Health Organization/UNICEF Ten Steps for Successful Breastfeeding.
