  • Collective IT artifacts : toward inclusive crisis infrastructures
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates a previously overlooked phenomenon in crisis response information systems; namely, inclusive crisis infrastructure. By expanding the well-acknowledged infrastructure concept with alternatives to understandthe nature and scope of inclusive crisis infrastructures, this paper contributes to closing the gap between theory and practice by raising some research questions critical to studying inclusive crisis infrastructures. The emerging literature on crisis response information systems suggests that external sourcing of information increasingly influences crisis response operations. To contribute to this discourse, the paper draws on Pipek and Wulf’s (2009) definition of work infrastructures and Palen and Liu’s (2007) conceptualization of peer-to-peer communications to develop a better understanding of the crisis response arena as a whole. In doing so, this paper goes beyond the emphasis on event-based technologies that currently dominate the crisis response information systems literature and instead argues why crisis infrastructures need to be both inward-looking and accommodating to technological and social outcomes parallel to formal response contexts. The novel conceptualization captures the fact that the crisis context contains collections of collective IT artifacts that are not aligned or related but that are, for autonomy reasons, interlinked to crisis organizations’ current IT infrastructure and may be of great value to such organizations if infrastructure capability options are considered.

  • How Do Critical Success Factors Contribute to a Successful IT Outsourcing : A Study of Large Multinational Companies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 14:1, s. 17-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing competition on the market means that multinational companies (MNCs) as well as many otherorganizations must take advantage of business improvements. This research addresses the critical success factors(CSFs) for the service receiver of IT outsourcing (ITO). It delivers a limited number CSFs that, with a correctimplementation, can deliver favorable results that are necessary for an efficient ITO. These 11 CSFs, are describedin detail, and a critical study is performed to identify the value they could create. In addition, the way theimplementation of the provided CSF could mitigate the ITO risk has been analyzed using transaction cost theory. Apriority list describing the order in which the CSFs should be implemented has been developed and enhanced with arecommendation as to when in the ITO life cycle each CSF should be implemented. A case study research with twoMNCs with more than 20 years’ experience in ITO has been used to prove the results.

  • The Role of Dominant Design in a Product Developing Firm’s Digital Innovation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - Hong Kong : Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 13:2, s. 5-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital technology offers new options for product-developing firms. However, to reap the benefits of digital technology, firms need to handle the tensions between these options and the institutionalized practices established over long periods of incremental innovation. We report on a twenty-month intensive case study of a global automaker’s efforts to innovate instrument clusters and explore the influencing role of established innovation practices. We develop a conceptual model for understanding how digital technology shapes, and is conditioned by, the dominant design of a product class. Our research contributes to the emerging literature of digital innovation and offers lessons learned for established firms dealing with the contradictory logics of digitized products.

  • A model for analyzing changes in systems development practices
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 13:3, s. 21-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces an empirically grounded model for analyzing intended and unintended changes in the prevalence of information systems development practices. In the model, any development practice observable in a development organization can be analyzed according to two dimensions: the intended scope of defined practices versus the actual scope of enacted practices. Furthermore, the model identifies eight types of change paths in systems development practices based on the two dimensions: emergence, entropy, initiation, abandonment, formalization, informalization, implementation, and recalcitrance. The eight types of change paths provide an integrated theoretical model for understanding how systems development practices can change in organizations and projects and among individual developers in a given context. The paper concludes by discussing how the model complements and integrates concepts of the contemporary research on systems development practices and outlines its potential uses for future research.

  • Understanding Coordination in the Information Systems Domain: Conceptualization and Implications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 17:1, s. 5-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new conceptualization of coordination in the Information Systems (IS) domain. The conceptualization is based on neurobiological predispositions for coordinating actions. We assume that human evolution has led to the development of a neurobiological substrate enabling coordination of everyday actions. A discussion of six activity modalities (contextualization, objectivation, spatialization, temporalization, stabilization, and transition) constitutes the core of this article. Specifically, we discuss that collective functioning of these modalities is essential for successful coordination. This finding is illustrated based on application of our conceptualization in important IS research areas, including project management and interface design. Generally, our new conceptualization holds value for coordination research on all four levels of analysis which we identified based on a review of the IS literature (i.e., group, intra-organization, inter-organization, and IT artifact). In this way, our new approach, grounded in neurobiological findings, provides a high-level theory to explain coordination success, or coordination failure, and hence is independent from a specific level of analysis. From a practitioner’s perspective, the conceptualization provides a guideline for the design of organizational interventions and IT artifacts. Since social initiatives are essential in multiple IS domains (e.g., software development, implementation of enterprise systems), and because the design of collaborative software tools is an important IS topic, this paper contributes to a fundamental phenomenon in the IS domain, and does so from a new conceptual perspective.

  • Between a rock and a hard place : facing dilemmas in IT risk management
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1552-6496 .- 1532-4516. ; 19:3, s. 22-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we extend IT risk management theory using evidence gleaned from IT-enabled process management in a Swedish pulp and paper factory. Our analyses of risk management practices in the factory’s core process revealed surprising insights. As organizational actors managed process related IT risks to ensure that the core production process was running 24/7, they generated strategic IT risks that threatened the sustainability of the process infrastructure. However, they could not manage these strategic risks without jeopardizing the 24/7 operation. Hence, they inadvertently found themselves between a rock and a hard place where they could not mitigate one high priority risk without generating another. Drawing on practice theory, we explain the observed risk management practices, introduce the notion of risk dilemmas, and discuss the practice-based view of risk as a useful approach to advancing IT risk management theory.
