  • Middle-class older adults living alone in urban India : Older adults’ understandings of ageing alone
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; , s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study sheds light on the value systems of the middle-class metropolitan older adults living alone, on the ageing self and the person's relationship to the surrounding society based on eight interviews. Ageing research has emphasized the traditional features of elderly care in India including its collectivist values rooted in filial piety and the extended family as well as embracement of disengagement influenced by the Hindu texts on two phases in later life: "hermit" and "renunciate". Increased social and geographical mobility, however, challenges traditional family systems. Using the example of the urban middle-class older adults living alone, this study explored whether living alone constitutes a challenge to the norms that previous research associated with Indian elderly care. Using abductive phenomenographic analysis the study found that the understandings of older adults in the study show great reflexivity concerning key aspects of their lives. Although the life conditions of older adults living alone deviated in many aspects from dominant traditional norms of filial piety and a care regime based on strong intergenerational interdependence, their responses and reflections mirrored assemblages of values deeply rooted in Hindu Vedic philosophy of the Ashramas and perceptions of independence, autonomy and self-reliance associated with Western "productive" aging.

  • Witchcraft accusations and older adults : insights from family members on the struggles of well-being
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; , s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Africa, witch doctors are consulted not only for healing diseases, but also for invoking curses. There has been a paradigm shift involving the types of people often accused of using witchcraft in response to the changing political, economic, and social landscape, and the most affected group is older adults. While efforts are being made to eliminate accusations and lynching, little attention is paid to understanding the experiences of accused older adults and their families. The study collected data through face-to-face interviews from 12 family members of accused older adults who are living in their communities to identify their wellbeing challenges. The findings of this study will offer significant contributions because a lot of attention has been given to older adults confined in “witch” camps, but this paper looks at those in the communities. The study found that ostracism and marginalization, as well as emotional and psychological distress, are key wellbeing challenges experienced by older adults and their families accused of witchcraft. The findings suggest that there is a need for governmental involvement in actively enforcing existing laws that criminalize banishment of accused persons and recognizing that victims of such accusations need trauma-related support services which is currently non-existent. Specifically, a clarion call is placed on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to spearhead reforms around trauma-related support provision.

  • Divergent logics of spiritual care : End of life and the role of the Church of Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; 21:4, s. 344-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the role of the Church of Sweden in spiritual care for parishioners in their end-of-life phase. The frame of reference is a new geography of dying that implies that a majority of Swedes today, particularly older people, die in their local neighborhood of belonging, in fact in their parishes. Findings from a study of all parishes in two Swedish communities are presented that indicate support for dying parishioners is surprisingly uncommon, although most parishes offer support for the bereaved. A possible interpretation of these contrasting patterns is discussed. The findings indicate that divergent forms of care logic motivated the different types of support offered by the Church. Long-standing relationships with aging parishioners seemed to be at the heart of the matter.

  • The four-dimensional model of mindful sustainable aging : a holistic alternative
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; 35:4, s. 430-454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses a four-dimensional model of mindful sustainable aging (MSA) in the four biological, psychological, social, spiritual dimensions. The model is made up of eight components, activeness, bodily awareness, change processes, vigorousness, dynamism, mental alertness, social support and spiritual support. Modern western and traditional Buddhist notions of mindfulness/sati, and their utility in terms of improving the physical, mental and social lives of seniors, are explored, the uniqueness of MSA being in the provision of a construct that is more integrated, holistic, and multi-faceted than other current gerontological theories. This paper, by drawing attention to the four-dimensional MSA model, therefore attempts to demonstrate how mindfulness practices support these four dimensions (i.e., biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions).

  • Intrinsic and Extrinsic Religious Orientation Among the Very Old
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; 24:4, s. 314-324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to test a shortened version of the Swedish Religious Orientation Scale's (SROS) appropriateness, feasibility, and ability to distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation among very old people. The participants (n = 43) were Lutheran believers aged ≥85 years. They scored high on both the intrinsic and extrinsic sub-scales and a cluster analysis revealed three clusters of items, one measuring intrinsic religious orientation and two measuring extrinsic religious orientation. The shortened version of the SROS appears appropriate for distinguishing between intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation among very old people.

  • "I'm on my way" The meaning of being oldest old, as narrated by people aged 95 and over
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion Spirituality and Aging. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1552-8049 .- 1552-8030. ; 19:2, s. 3-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A phenomenological hermeneutic analysis of interviews with 12 persons aged between 95 and 103 years was performed to uncover the meaning of the lived experience of being oldest old. Two themes were formulated, namely, being in stillness and in movement, which involves being in one’s aged body, unable to move, and being in the stillness of the inner person occupied with an inner movement of remembering, and reconciling with, life; and being at the threshold and being ready to let go, which implies being at peace with God and feeling confidence despite the anxiety of dying. A comprehensive understanding was formulated based

  • Behind the Youthful Facade : The Church of Sweden Abroad and Its Older Visitors and Volunteers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - : Routledge. - 1552-8030 .- 1552-8049. ; 26:4, s. 340-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the role of the Church of Sweden Abroad, with its 45 parishes in foreign countries, for older Swedes who live or stay abroad, permanently or for long or short periods. The article is based on a research project comprising three studies: a qualitative study, an analysis of websites and information material, and an Internet-based survey. The results highlight the important role played by the parishes for older visitors, in terms of providing community, support, and religious services. However, people above the age of 65 were virtually invisible on the church websites and in other information material. This paradox is discussed and the concept of ageism is used in the analysis.

  • Living Amidst Consolation in the Presence of God Perceptions of Consolation Among the Oldest Old : The Umeå 85+ Study.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging. - 1552-8030. ; 19:3, s. 3-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes how 90-year-olds and older people perceive consolation. Qualitative Content analysis of 49 interviews revealed four categories: consolation by God; consolation from others; consolation from self; and consolation from things, which were present in two themes. The theme "Living amidst consolation in the presence of God" was a core theme and expresses consolation as self-evident and based on a relation to God, others, self, and things. The theme "Seeking consolation," expresses consolation from self, others, things, or God. Interviewees in some cases regretted that they had no religious faith. Reasonably, most interviewees referred to religious consolation, as religion had been so closely connected with the word "consolation" all their lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
