  • Relative Wellbeing of Women Maltreated as Children
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 28:12-13, s. 2947-2965
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores and analyzes how adult women in Sweden exposed to childhood maltreatment describe wellbeing, by using a thematic analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews with women maltreated as children. The results show that wellbeing was described as relative to both social norms and the childhood experiences and constituted four dimensions: Material and/or economic; Social and relational;Emotional; and Physical and/or mental. This study concludes that it is important to consider the relative and multiple ways wellbeing can be experienced and understood and to problematize norms of wellbeing, acknowledging the various ways people appraise their lives.

  • The ability of criminal law to produce gender equality : judicial discourses in the Swedish criminal legal system
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 173-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of the Swedish Women’s Peace reform in 1998 was to enhance criminal legal protection for women exposed to violence in heterosexual relationships and to promote gender equality. However, these ambitions risk being contravened in a masculinist criminal legal system. One problem concerns how the victim is constructed in criminal legal cases. The author argues that moral balancing and discourses of responsibility and guilt in Swedish cases constrain the agency possible for women and suggest that a more comprehensive policy in Sweden must be developed to include violent men, their agency, and their responsibility for the violence.

  • Experiences of online sexual violence : interviews with Swedish teenage girls in psychiatric care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research about online sexual violence (OSV) is needed to be able to better meet the needs of girls in psychiatric care. The objectives of this study are to explore experiences of online sexual violence among young female psychiatric service users. Interviews with nine girls with psychiatric care needs were analyzed with thematic analysis. The findings are summarized in four themes which contribute to the notion that online sexual violence is only one, albeit important, part of a more complex picture of violence among young girls in psychiatric care. The girls’ narratives are shaped by, as well as reproducing gender norms.

  • Professionals’ Views on the Comparatively Low Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Spain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 28:6-7, s. 1565-1586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to understand the reasons why Spain has one of the lowest prevalence rates of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) in the European Union. Using a qualitative and inductive research approach, a total of five focus groups (n = 19) and 10 unstructured interviews with key informants were conducted. Three main categories were identified as possible explanations of the relatively low prevalence of IPVAW in Spain: law and policy, social awareness, and cultural patterns. Lessons learned and implications to improve future macrolevel intervention and prevention strategies are discussed.

  • Crime prevention in rural areas : addressing violence against women
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this article is to report experiences of local crime prevention initiatives onviolence against women in rural Sweden. The study relies on a combination of secondary dataand surveys. Although violence against women is higher in urban areas, rural municipalitiesare showing more cases than in the past. The geography of violence against women is farfrom being homogeneous across the country, reflecting not only population structuraldifferences but also local and regional capabilities of criminal justice and society overallconditions to deal with this type of violence. Beyond the problems imposed by geographicalisolation, some of the challenges shared by those working with violence against women inrural areas are limited resources to assist victims and difficulties in putting in practice nationalpolicy guidelines. The article concludes with a summary of results and suggestions for futureresearch.

  • Fear of Sexual Harassment and Its Impact on Safety Perceptions in Transit Environments : A Global Perspective. Violence Against Women
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study reports variation in safety perceptions in transit environments, based onsamples of university students in 18 cities on six continents who responded to anidentical 45-question survey (N= 13,323 university students). We explore potentiallinks between students’ fears and sexual victimization and conclude that sexualharassment affects their behavior and mobility. Student mobility was affected byavoidance strategies prompting some transit riders to travel at particular times, ontravel routes and settings that are deemed especially risky, or even avoiding usingtransit completely. Findings highlight the importance of city–country contexts fortransit safety.

  • Changes in Psychiatric Symptoms in Swedish Mothers Who Took Part in Project Support : An Intervention for Mothers Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence With Children Who Have Developed Conduct Problems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project Support (PS) is an evidence-based individual support and parenting program developed for mothers exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) whose children have developed conduct disorders. This Swedish feasibility study focuses on changes in the mothers' psychiatric symptoms, in relation to social and emotional support received as part of PS. In a within-subject design in a naturalistic setting (i.e., 10 social service units), mothers (n = 35) reported a significant decrease in symptoms, but from an individual perspective, most mothers still suffered from clinical levels of psychiatric symptoms. The need for additional interventions for mothers exposed to IPV is discussed.

  • "Keeping up a front" : narratives about intimate partner violence, pregnancy, and antenatal care
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 189-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nine women who had been subjected to severe intimate partner violence during pregnancy narrated their ambiguous and contradictory feelings and the various balancing strategies they used to overcome their complex and difficult situations. Because allowing anyone to come close posed a threat, the women mostly denied the situation and kept up a front to hide the violence from others. Three women disclosed ongoing violence to the midwives, but only one said such disclosure was helpful. This article highlights the complexity of being pregnant when living with an abusive partner and challenges antenatal care policies from the perspective of pregnant women.

  • Violent Men as Good-Enough Fathers? : A Look at England and Sweden
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Violence Against Women. - California : Sage publications, Thousand Oaks, CA. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 7:7, s. 779-798
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, the authors examine the contrary way that policy and practice have tended to operate in both Sweden and England, concerning violence against women on one hand and children on the other. The arrangements made for children's contact with parents after parents have separated or divorced are important with regard to the ongoing safety of women and children who have left violent men. However, fatherhood in the context of separation and divorce has tended to be construed as inherently nonviolent, with dangerous consequences for women, child safety, and children's welfare.

  • Increased Risk of Mortality Due to Interpersonal Violence in Foreign-Born Women of Reproductive Age : A Swedish Register-Based Study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 22:11, s. 1287-1304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Violence against women is an increasing public health concern, with assault leading to death as the most extreme outcome. Previous findings indicate that foreign-born women living in Sweden are more exposed to interpersonal violence than Swedish-born women. The current study investigates mortality due to interpersonal violence in comparison with other external causes of death among women of reproductive age in Sweden, with focus on country of birth. Foreign-born women and especially those from countries with low and very low gender equity levels had increased risk of mortality due to interpersonal violence, thus implicating lack of empowerment as a contributing factor.
