  • ASPEM as the New Topographic Analysis Tool for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) Performance Models Utilization
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship. - : SpringerLink. - 1099-9264 .- 1939-4675 .- 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 3:1, s. 53-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantifying and measuring small firm performance is vital in our understanding of how internationalization influences firm performance. That is also important when attempting to grasp the mechanisms of the internationalization processes. There are few methods used for the evaluation of performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SMEs). These methods can be either macro or micro economic in nature. Hazard Modeling, Stochastic Models, and Learning Models are examples of macro economic models while Z-Scores, ZETA-Scores, Neural Networks, and the SIV® model are examples of micro models. Choosing the most suitable performance model is an essential step in order to maximize our knowledge in relation to firm performance. Utilizing SMEs performance measures without thinking about the category of model, will bias the outcome of the majority of SMEs studies. However, using firm performance diverse models in an efficient manner requires strategic thinking. In this paper, we are re-introducing a tool that can accommodate that aspect. Abouzeedan (2002) designated the new tool: the Arena of SMEs Performance Models or an ASPEM diagram. The horizontal axis in the diagram indicates the Information Intensity Requirements of the model. The vertical axis indicates the Coverage Intensity of the model varying from an individual firm up to a whole group of firms. By allocating each of the SMEs performance models, at the suitable region of the ASPEM Diagram, researchers can better build a sound strategy for the application of these methods.

  • Business model innovation of International New Ventures : an empirical study in a Swedish context
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 17:1, s. 75-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business model innovation (BMI) is receiving increased academic attention as a tool for gaining new or retaining existing firms' competitive advantages. This paper investigates value delivery and value capture dimensions of BMI utilized by international new ventures (INVs) and shows how this category of firms differs from other internationalized firms in Sweden. Our findings indicate that INVs tend to innovate value delivery and value capture dimensions in the form of sales channels and logistical methods more frequently than other internationalized firms and reconfigure their external relationships more intensively as well. By utilizing longitudinal data, we show that these aspects continue to differentiate INVs and constitute a unique characteristic of INVs over time. Hence, this study enhances the academic debate on business models of INVs as well as on their long-term development past early internationalization efforts. From a managerial perspective, the study highlights where to focus BMI initiatives for sustained international presence and growth.

  • Organizational rejuvenation for knowledge exploitation : Exploring corporate entrepreneurship in an MNE
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 4:2-3, s. 83-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to study how organizational rejuvenation is used to increase and support knowledge exploitation in multinational enterprises. Using case-study data to explore the theoretical arguments, interesting findings emerge. The main finding is that entrepreneurial activities in IT industry enable organizational rejuvenation with repercussions beyond the focal function. Other findings relate to how corporate entrepreneurship activities provide possibilities for continuous knowledge exploitation within the MNE and how entrepreneurial groups inside MNEs form the foundation from which the organizational rejuvenation originates. Finally, the form of organizational rejuvenation studied embraced both structural and behavioral changes.

  • Born Global or Local? Factors influencing the Internationalization of University Spin-Offs - The Case of Halmstad University
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - New York : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 14:3, s. 296-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wealth of research in the past decades has examined born globals or international new ventures, which are firms that from inception view the whole world as a market and as a source to access resources. Many of these firms build their competitive advantage on high-tech knowledge. However, although many studies have shown how born globals can achieve success if they access resources through their relationships from actors in their networks, few studies have explored the relationship between born globals and universities. Universities are important actors in creating new technology knowledge, and many studies have shown how new firms, or so-called university spin-offs (USOs), are formed around universities. The current study explores why some USOs are successful in their international growth strategy and discusses the factors that influence and facilitate the internationalization process. The study investigates 10 USOs around the newly established Halmstad University in Sweden and finds that universities have a positive effect on firm creation and initial international growth. The regional competence base increases from the establishment of a local university, primarily by strengthening the regional human capital and by increasing university research. This study shows that researcher entrepreneurs’ ventures start as born globals, but that these firms do not continue to grow. Born global business models, per se, do not lead to competitive advantage and successful internationalization. Instead, a strategy built on customer focus and an ability to adapt to different customer demands lead to growth, and the location of growth is dependent on the size of the home market. This study also shows that student entrepreneurship can be a successful growth strategy for USOs focusing on both international and local markets. © 2016 Springer Science+Business Media New York

  • Differences in managerial behavior between small international and non-international firms
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - : Kluwer Academic Publishers. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 9:3, s. 233-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main question raised in this article is whether there are any differences between the work activities of managers in small firms primarily operating on an international market and those managing firms doing business on a domestic market. If so, what are these differences, and what do they tell us about the internationalization of small firms? The comparative method used here is based on multiple approaches including interviews, diary studies, and direct observations. The conclusions indicate that managers in small international firms are more proactive in their networking behavior, delegate operative activities and devote more time to planned strategic activities connected with their international expansion than managers in other small firms.

  • Innovative Internationalisation in New firms : Born Globals–the Swedish Case
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 1:3, s. 249-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past few years, the phenomenon of Born Globals has been highlighted in many studies. Such firms adopt a global approach right from their inception or very shortly thereafter. This behaviour challenges the traditional internationalisation models of slow and gradual development with respect to geographical markets and market entry modes. In this paper a conceptual framework is developed from earlier research and includes the factors: globalisation, entrepreneurs, networks, and industry. A survey showed that Born Globals were still very uncommon in Sweden. However, four Born Global firms were identified and analysed with the framework. It was concluded that the ongoing globalisation has made it easier to conduct Born Global strategies. However, active entrepreneurs, who recognised the global opportunities, were crucial for the implementation of these strategies, in which personal networks were used as tools.

  • International opportunity recognition in international new ventures—a dynamic managerial capabilities perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - New York, NY : Springer. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 13:3, s. 260-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to advance theoretical knowledge of the international opportunity recognition in international new ventures (INVs) from a dynamic capabilities perspective with particular focus on the emergent perspective of dynamic managerial capabilities. Building the extant literature on international opportunity recognition, dynamic capabilities theory, this paper presents a conceptual framework explaining how dynamic capabilities of the firm can be created and enacted through the entrepreneur’s dynamic managerial capabilities and actions for international opportunity identification for international firm growth. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities theory and more recent dynamic managerial capabilities perspective, this article enriches understanding of how opportunities are identified for the venture’s international development and growth. The article concludes with theoretical and research implications. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media New York

  • From outsider to insider: Opportunity development in foreign market networks
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 13:3, s. 337-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By applying the network position concept, we untangle the firm's recognition and exploitation of opportunities during the internationalisation process. We view the transition of network position from outsidership to insidership, in terms of the strength and number of relationships in the foreign market network. Departing from the revised Uppsala model, we argue that opportunity development in the business network consists of recognition and exploitation. Path dependence impacts how a firm exploits opportunity in the network as well as the next opportunity to be recognised, as they are contingent on the network position. Four opportunities are identified from a historical case study of Elekta, a Swedish medical device manufacturer that entered China between 1980 and 2010. We analyse the initial network position of the firm, its opportunity recognition and exploitation, and the network position of the firm in return. Based on the cases we demonstrate that outsidership tends to lead to discovery, while insidership results in creation. The insidership enables direct and indirect relationships, which are involved in the exploitation of the opportunity.

  • The Roles of Leadership, Vision, and Empowerment in Born Global Companies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - New York, NY : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 16:1, s. 38-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the roles of leadership, vision, and empowerment in two Swedish born global companies. Using case studies and interviews with employees and managers, the article examines how managers can lead their companies by creating a vision and empowering their employees. The findings indicate that a company vision should reflect a culture that supports the employees’ daily activities and decisions. A leadership style that features delegation of responsibility and recognition of employee work autonomy empowers employees in a way that can advance the development and internationalization of the born global company, especially in situations when top managers are often away from company headquarters. © 2017 The Author(s)

  • The effects of demographic, cognitive and institutional factors on development of entrepreneurial intention : toward a socio-cognitive model of entrepreneurial career
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship. - : Springer. - 1570-7385 .- 1573-7349. ; 13:4, s. 452-476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Upon a well-established theoretical foundation Social Cognitive Career Theory; Lent, Brown, and Hackett (J Vocat Behav 45:79–122, 1994; J Couns Psychol 47:36–49, 2000), this study examines the effects of cognitive, affective, social, demographic, and contextual factors on the development of entrepreneurial intention. To test the hypotheses, binary logistic regression analysis was conducted using data from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor survey in which 183,049 individuals nested within 54 countries that participated. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy beliefs and entrepreneurial career outcome expectations are significantly correlated with entrepreneurial intention. Mastery experience including previous business ownership, entrepreneurial activity as part of a regular job or investing in a venture, exposure to a role model, social persuasion through media, and fear of failure are significant sources of entrepreneurial self-efficacy. A moderate relationship exists between country-level institutional profile and the sources of self-efficacy.
