  • How do we do it? Methodologies, methods and subject foci in Gender Studies student’s degree projects

    • This article stresses the issue of methodology in an interdisciplinary field of research and education. The focus is on students and how they handle the situation with teachers coming from a number of traditional disciplines. These teachers bring a variation of research foci, methods and skills. For the students this could result in a wide range of possibilities to approach research from different angles. Yet, problems emerge when they are supposed to carry out their own projects. The article is based on my Master’s thesis. the research interest was on what students in Gender Studies actually do in their degree projects on what is called ‘advanced level I’. A query was how they related to feminist methodologies, which methods and theories they used and what research problems they where interested in interested them. In the projects examined most of the students seem to be familiar with, and use feminist theory. while the same could not be said about the methdology. this article points to a serious lack of methodological awareness, both in a more theoretical sense, but also as practical skills. The students do not seem to articulate very well what they actually do. the article suggests a practically oriented, ongoing discussion on methods in Gender Studies, especially in undergraduate education. Such a discussion should be grounded on methodological and epistemological theories with emphasis on research skills and methods.

  • Seeing through the white gaze : racialised markings of (un)familiar bodies in Swedish transnational adoption policy

    • This paper will explore racialised markings of transnational adoptees and adoptive families in current Swedish transnational adoption policy. Policy statements about transnational adoptees’ physical appearance, and the significance ascribed to it in adoptive family relations and everyday life make up the empirical data. Drawing on critical social policy, postcolonial feminism, critical whiteness studies, and Foucauldian archeology, the paper offers an interdisciplinary reading of the discursive conditions structuring understandings of belonging and difference in this particular context. This paper concludes that the adopted subject is ascribed a natural orientation towards the birth country and the biological family in the documents. Dark skin colour is made a symbol of belonging to another nation, another family. This approach is an arrogation of destabilisation, with the purpose of challenging the ways in which transnational adopted bodies are constructed as revealing and disturbing elements in white Swedish imaginary. To conclude, racialised markings of transnational adoptees as familiar, but yet unfamiliar bodies make visible the symbolic boundaries withholding transnational adoptees unconditional national and familial belonging.

    • Working in commercial research, it was interesting to note that many researchers had little grounding in academic social research methods or social theory. Organizations dealing with research often took for granted that to get at ‘the truth’ involved either simply ‘talking to people’ and looking at an aggregation of opinions, or carrying out a mix of ‘pre’ and ‘post’ (usually online) surveys and ‘ad-hoc’ pieces which privilege Likert scales as the primary tool of ‘measurement’. As Mike Savage and Roger Burrows (2007) note, such industries have challenged the public legitimacy of empirical sociological inquiry. Such a challenge arguably hinges on political rhetoric around demonstrable ‘impact’ and ‘maximising efficiency’. However, a lack of attention to research design poses significant problems for the authority that these industries lay claim to. Noting sociology’s ethical value and personal experience of commercial, ‘client led’ research, this paper seeks to outline a case for the continued importance of rigorous, ethical social research in contemporary society and against narrow conceptions of impact.

    • Brain scans of homosexuality, sexual desire and images of male and female brain function are becoming a common element of popular scientific news. How is sexuality re-described and re-produced when studied in brain scanners? This article explores the cultural production of sexuality in the growing field of neuroimaging research. In focus is the neural framing of sexuality, i.e. the process by which sexuality is understood as a matter of brain activity and visualizable with medical imaging technologies. The neuroframing of sexuality enables a reproduction of socio-cultural notions of difference, but also of neuroscience’s own notions of agency. The neural framing of sexuality re-mediates an idealized sexuality: ageless, neatly oriented, bodiless although haunted by the de-animated body, unfolding neatly as a sequential response of a psychological inside to an inanimate outside, and essentialized as independent from its feelers and objects.

    • This essay is about the embodied experience of writing a dissertation about Anders Behring Breivik and the terrorist attack in Norway on 22 July 2011. I will reflect upon what it was like to do research on material that recounts, with great detail, the life of a right-wing terrorist and the violence that he unleashed. My dissertation focuses on the ‘stories’ about Breivik, i.e. how his actions have been made sense of and how the violence of the terrorist attack has been narrated, but I also wrote a lot about how it felt to read and write about such a person and such an event. This emotional data became an important part of my research and in this essay I will elaborate further on the ethical and theoretical implications of this; the affective relationship between researcher and research material; and the practice of reading and the methodology of writing. I will argue that in order to analyze what a text does, it is not enough to deconstruct what it says. One also needs to deconstruct the relationship between text, the world it writes, and the feeling, reading body.

  • Who's the expert? On knowledge as praxis - a methodological approach

    • To establish a knowledge seeking that sheds light upon manifoldness without simplifying plurality or further exposing implicit power hegemonies, feminist scholars need to distinguish between forms of rationalist knowledge and knowledge as praxis. This article calls attention to the fact that scholars need to address how issues of habits, norms, customs and ideas are related to the production of knowledge. Through analyses of an epistemological ranking-list and a methodological check list, the article investigate ways of managing plurality and power in contemporary feminist scholarly work and argue that the ambition to avoid power asymmetries in feminist scholarship is a problematic point of departure. By drawing on the works of Sara Ahmed and Chantal Mouffe, The article propose a methodology based on the idea of knowledge as praxis, treating knowledge production as action, occupied with investigating the relations we have to the world, intrinsically interwoven with culture, politics and power.
