  • Streamlining Grid Operations : Definition and Deployment of a Portal-based User Registration Service
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9184 .- 1570-7873. ; 4:2, s. 135-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manual management of public key credentials can be a significant and often off-putting obstacle to Grid use, particularly for casual users. We describe the Portal-based User Registration Service (PURSE), a set of tools for automating user registration, credential creation, and credential management tasks. PURSE provides the system developer with a set of customizable components, suitable for integration with portals, that can be used to address the full lifecycle of Grid credential management. We describe the PURSE design and its use in portals for two systems, the Earth System Grid data access system and the Swegrid computational Grid. In both cases, the user is entirely freed from the need to create or manage public key credentials, thus simplifying the Grid experience and reducing opportunities for error. We argue that this capturing of common use cases in a reusable ‘solution’ can be a model for how Grid ease-of-use can be addressed in other domains as well.

  • Evaluation of Storage Placement in Computing Continuum for a Robotic Application : A Simulation-Based Performance Analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 1570-7873 .- 1572-9184. ; 22:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the timing performance of a persistent storage designed for distributed container-based architectures in industrial control applications. The timing performance analysis is conducted using an in-house simulator, which mirrors our testbed specifications. The storage ensures data availability and consistency even in presence of faults. The analysis considers four aspects: 1. placement strategy, 2. design options, 3. data size, and 4. evaluation under faulty conditions. Experimental results considering the timing constraints in industrial applications indicate that the storage solution can meet critical deadlines, particularly under specific failure patterns. Comparison results also reveal that, while the method may underperform current centralized solutions in fault-free conditions, it outperforms the centralized solutions in failure scenario. Moreover, the used evaluation method is applicable for assessing other container-based critical applications with timing constraints that require persistent storage.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - 1570-7873 .- 1572-9184. ; 2:4, s. 341-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the European DataGrid project, Work Package 2 has designed and implemented a set of integrated replica management services for use by data intensive scientific applications. These services, based on the web services model, enable movement and replication of data at high speed from one geographical site to another, management of distributed replicated data, optimization of access to data, and the provision of a metadata management tool. In this paper we describe the architecture and implementation of these services and evaluate their performance under demanding Grid conditions.

  • Grid Deployment Experiences : Grid Interoperation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF GRID COMPUTING. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-7873 .- 1572-9184. ; 7:3, s. 287-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over recent years a number of Grid projects have emerged which have built Grid infrastructures that are now the computing backbones for various user communities. A significant number of these communities are limited to one Grid Infrastructure due to the different middleware and operations procedures used. Grid Interoperation is trying to bridge these differences and enable Virtual Organizations to access resources independent of the Grid project affiliation. Building upon the experiences the authors have gained while working on interoperation between EGEE and various other Grid infrastructures as well as through co-chairing the Grid Interoperation Now (GIN) efforts of the Open Grid Forum (OGF), this paper gives an overview of Grid Interoperation and describes various methods that can be used to connect Grid Infrastructures. The case is made for standardization in key areas and why the Grid community should move more aggressively towards standards.

  • IoTEF : A Federated Edge-Cloud Architecture for Fault-Tolerant IoT Applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - : Springer. - 1570-7873 .- 1572-9184. ; 18, s. 57-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has led to an increased emphasis on edge computing for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), in which applications rely on processing data closer to the data sources, and sharing the results across heterogeneous clusters. This has simplified the data exchanges between IoT/CPS systems, the cloud, and the edge for managing low latency, minimal band- width, and fault-tolerant applications. Nonetheless, many of these applications administer data collec- tion on the edge and offer data analytic and storage capabilities in the cloud. This raises the problem of separate software stacks between the edge and the cloud with no unified fault-tolerant management, hin- dering dynamic relocation of data processing. In such systems, the data must also be preserved from being corrupted or duplicated in the case of intermittent long-distance network connectivity issues, malicious harming of edge devices, or other hostile environ- ments. Within this context, the contributions of this paper are threefold: (i) to propose a new Internet of Things Edge-Cloud Federation (IoTEF) architec- ture for multi-cluster IoT applications by adapting our earlier Cloud and Edge Fault-Tolerant IoT (CEFIoT) layered design. We address the fault tolerance issue by employing the Apache Kafka publish/subscribe platform as the unified data replication solution. We also deploy Kubernetes for fault-tolerant manage- ment, combined with the federated scheme, offering a single management interface and allowing automatic reconfiguration of the data processing pipeline, (ii) to formulate functional and non-functional requirements of our proposed solution by comparing several IoT architectures, and (iii) to implement a smart build- ings use case of the ongoing Otaniemi3D project as proof-of-concept for assessing IoTEF capabilities. The experimental results conclude that the architec- ture minimizes latency, saves network bandwidth, and handles both hardware and network connectivity based failures.

  • Towards Blockchain-Enabled Security Technique for Industrial Internet of Things Based Decentralized Applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - Springer : Springer. - 1570-7873 .- 1572-9184. ; 18:2020, s. 615-628
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is one of the emerging trends and paradigm shifts to revolutionize the traditional industries with the fourth wave of evolution or transform it into Industry 4.0. This all is merely possible with the sensor-enabled technologies, e.g., wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in various landscapes, where security provisioning is one of the significant challenges for miniaturized power hungry networks. Due to the increasing demand for the commercial Internet of things (IoT) devices, smart devices are also extensively adopted in industrial applications. If these devices are compromising the date/information, then there will be a considerable loss and critical issues, unlike information compromising level by the commercial IoT devices. So emerging industrial processes and smart IoT based methods in medical industries with state-of-the-art blockchain security techniques have motivated the role of secure industrial IoT. Also, frequent changes in android technology have increased the security of the blockchain-based IIoT system management. It is very vital to develop a novel blockchain-enabled cyber-security framework and algorithm for industrial IoT by adopting random initial and master key generation mechanisms over long-range low-power wireless networks for fast encrypted data processing and transmission. So, this paper has three remarkable contributions. First, a blockchain-driven secure, efficient, reliable, and sustainable algorithm is proposed. It can be said that the proposed solution manages keys randomly by introducing the chain of blocks with less power drain, a small number of cores, will slightly more communication and computation bits. Second, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based intelligent decision-making approach for the secure, concurrent, interoperable, sustainable, and reliable blockchain-driven IIoT system. AHP based solution helps the industry experts to select the more relevant and critical parameters such as (reliability in-line with a packet loss ratio), (convergence in mapping with delay), and (interoperability in association with throughput) for improving the yield of the product in the industry. Third, sustainable technology-oriented services are supporting to propose the novel cloud-enabled framework for the IIoT platform for regular monitoring of the products in the industry. Moreover, experimental results reveal that proposed approach is a potential candidate for the blockchain-driven IIoT system in terms of reliability, convergence, and interoperability with a strong foundation to predict the techniques and tools for the regulation of the adaptive system from Industry 4.0 aspect.
