  • (Un)Weaving (Un)Sustainability
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Design Research Conference : Matters of Scale - Matters of Scale. - 1604-9705. ; :9, s. 160-169, s. 161-169
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spatio-temporal scale of design for sustainability has come full circle. What started within a technology-oriented global outlook, later evolving into a people-oriented and local view on change, now urges for a holistic, broad extent and multilevel design for sustainability. This paper enquires into the theories of social change that govern different approaches within the field, and positions the adhesion of socio-technical system innovation and transition design to classical modern theory, against an emergent design paradigm anchored in practice theory. By drawing on the literature of the field and comparing various models, a conceptual framework is suggested where "practice" serves as an alternative scale. In broadening the scope of analysis in design, this frame of thought can solve the inherent incompatibility of geographical, jurisdictional and institutional hierarchies as vessels to conceptualize the complex and dynamic processes through which social change is (can be) brought about.

  • Inquiry into Libraries - A Design Approach to Children's Interactive Library
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: In the web proceedings of Nordic Design Research: www.nordes.org. - 1604-9705. ; , s. 1-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a design process ofpervasive computing installations for achildren’s interactive library. The designprocess involved a wide range of decisive partiesof the domain and the process was designed sothat the collectively developed design conceptscould suit the needs and interests of the manyparties. Narratives and sketches were used forinquiries and communication, and the conceptsand their iterations illustrate the process ofdesign and how the physical qualities of theenvironment and the artefacts played a centralrole in the development of the concepts.

  • Design-Politics Nexus : Material Articulations and Modes of Acting
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordes;6. - : Konstfack. ; , s. 1-10:6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a theoretical attempt to formulate an ontological understanding of design as a set of articulations and modes of acting that manipulate the materiality of the world in order to re-direct and re-orient the possible ways of inhabiting, accessing and shaping the world. Such an understanding puts forward a way of approaching the question of politics in, of and for design that design and politics should be understood as a twofold embedded in one environment. This then has consequences both for design and for politics. I argue that these consequences can be understood better through unfolding the political forms made possible by design as well as the material and designed forms that have become necessary given today’s political situation. By drawing on a series of examples, I will argue how design is already a political form and how politics is a form of material articulation. Such an understanding then gives shape to the recognition of the activities and forces that already exist in the world and sketches out possibilities of acting upon that recognition.

  • Design Togetherness
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordes. - Nordes. - 1604-9705. ; :6, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While science typically approaches complexity through analysis, that is, by unpacking a complex whole into distinct and more manageable parts, the challenge of design is typically to do the opposite; to resolve often contradictory issues and bring together a meaningful whole. We think that there are more to forms of doing design together than our current terminology allows us to articulate. In particular, we want to explore if there are forms of design doing that open up for a kind of bringing together that is qualitatively different from collaboration, in the same way as the meaningful whole design deals with is something qualitatively different than a combination of parts coming out of an analysis. To learn more about doing design together in design education, we have done a series of experiments with multi disciplinary teams. Analysing the results using Arendt’s distinctionbetween work and action, we suggest that there is a difference between collaborative design where people come together as what they are, and a kind of design togetherness where people come together as who they are. In conclusion, we argue that design education might need to revisit its artistic and methodological foundations with respect to participation.

  • Designing with Smart Textiles : a new research program
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nordes. - : Nordes. - 1604-9705. ; :4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • No longer is it sufficient to add ‘smart’ to textiles to secure interesting research results. We have surpassed the initial stages of explorations and testing and now need to raise the bar. We have thus specified a research program in which we investigate what it means to design with smart textiles. What can we design with smart textiles? And how do we design with smart textiles? We now explore how these complex, often abstract, materials can enter traditional design practices and what role smart textile can play in the design of our environment. In this paper, we discuss the challenges we see at present, we outline our new research program and we qualify it through three examples of our ongoing projects: The smart textile sample collection, Dynamic textile patterns, and Bonad [tapestry]. The paper is as much an invitation to join forces, as it is a description of a maturing process within design research. We are over the first love, now what?

  • Absent futures in Gothenburg's jubilee architecture
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NORDES 2023: THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK. - 1604-9705.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper interrogates the relation between architectural design, on the one hand, and social imaginaries of time, on the other. It does so in the context of ongoing research on the futures imagined and enacted in the architectural structures emerging in time for Gothenburg’s 2023 quadricentennial jubilee. The argument focuses on the ways in which conceptions of the future are absent, particularly when juxtaposing the 2023 jubilee with the Gothenburg’s 1923 tricentennial jubilee. As such, the paper seeks to engage with recent scholarship on temporal approaches to design.

  • Precious Materials of Interaction : Exploring Interactive Accessories as Jewellery Items
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordes. - : Nordes – Nordic Design Research. - 1604-9705. ; :6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a series of design explorations on the theme of wearable and mobile technology through the lens of jewellery design. This is done by looking at properties of traditional fine jewellery in terms of material considerations and crafting processes, as well as considerations related to patterns of wear and interaction. By using jewellery as a point of departure, both theoretically and practically, we discuss four topics: a) the gestalt of electronic artefacts versus jewellery design, b) material preciousness, c) interactive properties of physical materials, and d) jewellery usage as an inspiration for new interactive designs.
