  • Paxilloboletus gen. nov., a new lamellate bolete genus from tropical Africa
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Mycological progress. - : Springer Nature. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 21:1, s. 243-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents Paxilloboletus gen. nov., a new lamellate bolete genus represented by two tropical African species, Paxilloboletus africanus sp. nov. and Paxilloboletus latisporus sp. nov. Although the new taxa strongly resemble Paxillus (Paxillaceae), they lack clamp connections and form a separate generic clade within the Boletaceae phylogeny. The new species are lookalikes, morphologically only separable by their spore morphology. Descriptions and illustrations of the new genus and new species are given, as well as comments on ecology, distribution, and morphological differences with other gilled Boletaceae.

  • A checklist and worldwide distribution patterns of macrofungi in Iran
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mycological Progress. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although West Asia potentially represents one of the diversity hotspots for several groups of fungi, our knowledge of the funga in this region is fragmentary. Here, we provide a list of macrofungal species from Iran and performed a comparative analysis of macrofungal diversity in 12 regions worldwide. The list was compiled from relevant national/international conference letters, GenBank submissions, and published literature in Persian, English, and other languages. In total, 1333 species of macrofungal Asco- and Basidiomycota are listed which were reported from 31 provinces of Iran. We have classified the reported fungi into 12 predefined morphogroups, with most of them being agaricoid species (60%). The Hyrcanian forests that stretch along the Caspian Sea coast in northern Iran are the most species-rich region. Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was used to check the number of worldwide occurrences of the reported species which revealed a total of 17 species were exclusively reported from Iran. We suggest that globally rare or low-occurrence species from Iran require global attention and potentially can contribute to the IUCN list of endangered species. Based on comparisons between the macrofungi of Iran and that of various countries, the Iranian species composition is found to be similar to those of the Mediterranean regions.

  • Phylogenetic assessment and taxonomic revision of Halobyssothecium and Lentithecium (Lentitheciaceae, Pleosporales)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Mycological progress. - : Springer Nature. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 20:5, s. 701-720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our studies on lignicolous aquatic fungi in Thailand, Sweden, and the UK resulted in the collection of three new Halobyssothecium species (H. bambusicola, H. phragmitis, H. versicolor) assigned to Lentitheciaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). Multi-loci phylogenetic analyses of the combined large subunit, small subunit, internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA, and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha sequence data enabled a revision of the taxa assigned to Lentithecium and the transfer of L. cangshanense, L. carbonneanum, L. kunmingense, L. unicellulare, and L. voraginesporum to Halobyssothecium. Collection of an asexual morph of L. lineare and phylogenetic analysis confirmed its taxonomic placement in Keissleriella. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of H. bambusicola, H. phragmitis, and H. versicolor are provided.

  • Increased CO2 evolution caused by heat treatment in wood-decaying fungi
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mycological progress. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 16:5, s. 513-519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wood-decaying fungi are regarded as the main decomposers of woody debris in boreal forests. Given that fungal respiration makes a significant contribution to terrestrial carbon flows, it is important to understand how the wood-decaying fungal metabolism is regulated in relation to different environmental conditions and disturbances. In the present study, we investigated the effect of temperature stress on wood decomposition rate in 18 species of wood-decaying fungi, representing a broad range of species-habitat associations. Heat shock duration and temperature were calibrated to match the conditions of a forest fire. We found a general increase in fungal decay rate after heat shock; the response was more pronounced in species associated with fire-prone forests. The underlying mechanism is unclear, but possibly relates to an up-regulation at the cellular level in response to heat shock. Our results show that the decomposition rate of dead wood can be strongly affected by environmental triggers.

  • Short communication : fruiting body production in two species of wood-decaying Basidiomycetes induced by pre-inoculation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mycological progress. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 15:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluated pre-inoculation to induce fruiting body production in wood-decaying fungi, using two species that readily create basidiomata in the laboratory: Antrodia sinuosa and Junghuhnia luteoalba. A new method was implemented in which the substrate was modified by species-specific pre-inoculation. We found that the use of the pre-inoculated substrate reduced the length of time necessary for the production of fruiting bodies. Under these conditions, both species produced basidiomata in 1-2 weeks, whereas over 2 months was required on a non-modified substrate. Thus we conclude that the induction of fruiting body production by pre-inoculation is possible, and we discuss the effect of the substrate modification.

  • Amanita sect. Phalloideae : two interesting non-lethal species from West Africa
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Mycological progress. - : Springer Nature. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 21:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The members of Amanita sect. Phalloideae (Fr.) Quel. are responsible for many fatalities worldwide. However, some species in this section have previously been reported as non-lethal and lacking deadly toxins. Sequences of five genes (ITS, nrLSU, RPB2, TEF1-alpha, TUB2) of species belonging to the section from tropical Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe were included in this study to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among the species. The results indicated that the lethal species are in one clade (subclade I) while the non-lethal species are divided into two clades (subclades II and III) within the section. Moreover, two non-lethal species from tropical Africa, namely A. ballerinoides and A. bulbulosa are newly described based on both morphology and molecular approaches. Phylogenetically, they cluster in the same subclade III with other known non-lethal amanitas, including A. ballerina, A. chuformis, A. franzii, A. levistriata, and A. pseudogemmata. Neither amatoxins nor phallotoxins were detected in A. ballerinoides and A. bulbulosa by LC-HRMS, which agrees with their placement in the non-lethal subclade III within A. sect. Phalloideae. Finally, a key to the West African species of Amanita sect. Phalloideae is provided.

  • Ganoderma lingzhi (Polyporales, Basidiomycota): the scientific binomial for the widely cultivated medicinal fungus Lingzhi
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mycological Progress. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 16:11-12, s. 1051-1055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The traditional medicinal fungus, Lingzhi, has long been considered to be Ganoderma lucidum, but was recently described as G. lingzhi based on both morphological and molecular data. Months earlier than this description, the species was identified as G. sichuanense by another research group. A sequenced epitype for G. sichuanense was selected that, if accepted, meant that it became a synonym of, and an earlier name for, G. lingzhi. However, the holotype of G. sichuanense is well developed with distinct morphological characters, and its ITS sequence, the DNA barcode for fungal taxonomy, is available. The holotype of G. sichuanense does not possess the typical morphological characteristics of Lingzhi, and the designated epitype is not conspecific with the holotype from morphological, phylogenetic and ecological perspectives. Consequently, the designation of the epitype is considered to conflict with the regulations of the Code and should be rejected. As no other previously published species name matches Lingzhi, the correct name for this fungus is G. lingzhi.

  • Ingår i: Mycological Progress. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 9, s. 281-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crypthonia with 11 species is described as belonging to the Arthoniaceae. The new genus is characterised by (1) white to pale carneous, maculiform ascomata lacking a distinct exciple, (2) a weakly gelatinised, hydrophobic hymenium of paraphysoids, (3) a discontinuous layer of branched ascogenous hyphae in the hypothecium, (4) small, clavate to broadly clavate asci of the Arthonia-type lacking a hemiamyloid ring structure in the tholus, (5) eight small, hyaline, 1-3-septate, thin-walled ascospores per ascus, (6) loosely attached thalli with a byssoid, coloured hypothallus, and (7) a chemistry of mainly beta-orcinol depsidones and tridepsides including psoromic, norstictic, and gyrophoric acids. Rugulosin occurs in C. bella and C. citrina. Crypthonia athertoniensis Frisch & G. Thor, C. bella Frisch & G. Thor, C. brevispora Frisch & G. Thor, C. citrina Frisch & G. Thor, C. olivacea Frisch & G. Thor, C. palaeotropica Frisch & G. Thor, and C. vandenboomii Frisch & G. Thor are described. C. albida (F,e) Frisch & G. Thor, C. biseptata (Aptroot & Wolseley) Frisch & G. Thor, C. mycelioides (Vain.) Frisch & G. Thor, and C. polillensis (Vain.) Frisch & G. Thor are new combinations. The delimitation from similar genera and the position within the Arthoniaceae is discussed.

  • Multiple evidence for recognition of Phlebia tuberculata, a more widespread segregate of Phlebia livida (Polyporales, Basidiomycota)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Mycological Progress. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-416X .- 1861-8952. ; 11:1, s. 27-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been previously shown that the Phlebia livida complex consists of two incompatible subspecies, viz. ssp. livida and ssp. tuberculata. Here we explain that the two subspecies can be distinguished based on morphology, phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ITS sequences, genetic distance, and a haplotype network, as well as by substrate preference. Subspecies tuberculata is raised to specific rank and a thorough description is provided. According to the results of the network analysis, Phlebia tuberculata comb. nov. seems to be an older species than Phlebia livida, congruent with its wider distribution, and at least some of its present populations have spread from the Caucasus region since the last glaciation. A key to the species of the Phlebia livida complex is presented
