  • First hegemony, then democracy : on ideology and the media discourse on the coup against Hugo Chávez
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - : Obercom. - 1646-5954. ; 6:3, s. 105-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the media discourse on the 2002 coup d’état against the government of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, with the aim of exploring how ideology in media discourse helps construct democracy in a Latin American political context. Critical discourse analysis is used to examine written pieces from Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), El País (Uruguay), and the New York Times (US). The study finds that the discourse on the overthrow and the events preceding it constructs the coup as a potential victory for democracy and as the definitive end of Chávez. However, after the failure of the coup and the reinstallation of Chávez one can perceive discursive renegotiations, such as the publishing of non-fundamental criticism of the overthrow. The study argues that the media discourse on the coup displays a highly relativistic attitude towards democracy, which serves the interests of the elite classes in Venezuela and of US hegemony in global politics. The article also argues that the flexibility of the discourse at hand shows the need for a detailed analysis of how ideology is (re)formed in media discourse.

  • Does media coverage of research misconduct impact on public trust in science? A study of news reporting and confidence in research in Sweden 2002–2013
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 9:4, s. 15-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past decade, there has been a gradual decline in public trust in science in Sweden. Questions have been raised as to whether or not this decline is the result of news media reports on research misconduct. Taking off in a theoretical discussion about the news media agenda-setting function, this study examined the extent to which, if any, there really is a connection between public trust and news content. It did so by drawing empirical support from a content analysis of the largest Swedish news media reporting on research misconduct in the years 2002–2013 and also from annual surveys of Swedes´ media consumption and trust in science, conducted over the same time period. Using news consumption, i.e. media exposure, as a proxy variable in the analysis, this study came to the conclusion that exposure to this type of news reporting had a positive rather than negative effect on public trust in science. The article discusses why this is so and also identifies some important questions that require to be further researched in order to understand public trust in science.

  • From broadsheet to tabloid: Content changes in Swedish newspapers in the light of a shrunken size
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 7:4, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During early 2000s the newspaper market in Northern Europe has been characterized by a trend of format changes as many broadsheets have chosen to adapt to the tabloid format. Similar tendencies have also emerged in other Western countries, making it a transnational phenomenon. Critics have argued that a shrunken size impacts the content towards increased tabloidization, inclining a connection between page size and news content where broadsheet and tabloid format require different kinds of journalism. This study thus aims at analysing whether it is possible to detect such an increased tabloidization in relation to the resize of newspapers. Using the theoretical concept of tabloidization the study takes off in a content analysis of Swedish dailies that changed format during early 2000s. Comparisons are made with newspapers that did not undergo such transition as means of determining whether any detected changes are explained by the actual format change or rather effects of other factors. The study focuses on news content published in 1990, 2000, and 2010, and it reveals that the format itself only has a minor influence on journalism as all newspapers show similar signs of increased tabloidization during this period.

  • New Demands on Editorial Leadership: Perceived Changes in Swedish Newspaper Management
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Last decades development of news production has accentuated the need for increased managerial skills among editorial leaders. This need is followed by discursive notions connecting management levels across sectors, also the sector of news production. The managerial ideology features globalization of values and economy in the labour market, as well as in the area of communication, and promotes streamlining of organizational models in line with a business thinking common to several industries. This kind of management ideology has implications for all levels of news work and, above all, emphasizes audience orientation to a further extent than before. Our article focuses on how editorial leaders in Sweden perceive their own role as leaders to be changing and why. It does so by drawing empirical support from a mixed methods design of three surveys of editors-in-chief in Sweden, conducted in 2005, 2010, and 2011. The result reveals that editorial leaders are strongly embracing values characterised by managerialism by bringing the key values of profit, efficiency and leadership into the newsroom. They also perceive their managerial influence to have increased in the newsroom. As this kind of leadership is rather new to Scandinavian news media, the article discusses what kind of implications this new form of leadership may have for news organizations in the facing of new challenges.

  • Framing the Financial Crisis : An unexpected interaction between the government and the press
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - 1646-5954. ; 8:1, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the dynamic interaction between government and news media in the frame-building process, the process of shaping journalistic news frames, during the financial crisis that erupted in September 2008. The unexpected as well as event-driven character of the financial crisis is expected to create dynamics that challenge journalists' dependence on powerful political actors as the national government by opening up the news gate wider to various voices and perspectives. However, the findings of this study indicate unexpected results as the government dominates the frame-building process. In order to empirically explore the frame-building process, this paper employs framing theory to analyse political actors' messages and news media coverage. The study employs two sets of data, the first a content analysis of news coverage and the second a content analysis of political messages, during a three month period in Sweden following the eruption of the financial crisis. Overall, the results of this study indicate that powerful political actors' ability to influence frame-building follows the predictable pattern of indexing also during an unexpected event thus limiting press independence.

  • Not minimal but more difficult to measure : A panel study of media effects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - 1646-5954. ; 12:3, s. 48-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional media effect theories as agenda-setting theory have recently been questioned due to the development of the media environment with media fragmentation and individualized media consumption. Other scholars disagree and suggest that a distinction has to be made between actual media effects and the ease with which they can be measured. Given this scholarly discussion the purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the agenda-setting effects of different media consumption measures on individual issue salience. The study is based on a panel survey that includes different measures of consumption: (1) general news media attention, (2) exposure to different media types such as traditional news media, online news media, and political social media. Overall, the findings suggest that general news media attention might be a more significant measure for consumption in a high-choice media environment. In essence, this study suggests that agenda-setting effects are not becoming non-significant but rather difficult to measure.

  • Top marks: How the media got Swedes to vaccinate against swine flu
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - 1646-5954. ; 5:2, s. 111-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on Bourdieu’s theory of social capital, this article analyses Swedes’ willingness to vaccinate during the swine flu outbreak in autumn 2009. The analysis is based partly on responses to a survey of 3,000 Swedes that was conducted when the virus was spreading, and partly on a comprehensive content analysis of the largest Swedish news media’s coverage of swine flu. The starting point is a model where people’s vaccination willingness is analysed against the background of their social capital, media consumption, perceived concern about catching the virus, and trust in how the authorities were handling the influenza virus. The results show that social capital in terms of class affiliation, education and profession in covariance with media consumption impacted both the perception of concern and trust in the authorities, and that, in this case, trust in the authorities had greater significance for the rate of vaccination than the perception of concern.

  • The citizen as media critic in periods of media change
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - Lisbon : OberCom. - 1646-5954. ; 4:4, s. 287-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Media criticism often evolve – and grow in strength – during times of media change with new forms of journalism, new media formats, new media markets, new ways of addressing media markets and new media technologies. Different stakeholders may pursue their interests by formulating a media critique that protect their positions and promotes status quo. It is not difficult to find critics who in the name of the citizens formulate criticism against journalism and the media. It is more difficult to find and study representative examples of criticism expressed by the citizens themselves. The technological development on the Internet has paved the way for a number of new communicative tools that enable users to interact with each other and publish content in a way that changes the conditions for citizens to act as media critics radically. This is an aspect of the Internet’s democratic and participatory potential – and a key point in the rhetoric surrounding the concept “web 2.0”. In this paper we analyse and compare media critical debates during two periods of media change in Sweden: A) the debate caused by the launch of the tabloid Expressen in the 1950’s, and B) the critique against the new, commercially driven participatory news- and debate forum called Newsmill, launched in 2008. These historical and contemporary cases are used to enlighten a theoretical discussion about participatory online media’s potential for improving the conditions for citizens to act as media critics in a fruitful way. Both Expressen and Newsmill represent examples of journalistic innovations that affect surrounding media considerably. The result of the comparison point to a new dilemma related to the role of citizens as media critics in the digital age. The fact that the citizens themselves are now increasingly involved in the production of content, also puts them in a new role as defenders of the site that publish their content, against critics from traditional mass media.
