  • Álvarez López, Laura, et al. (författare)
  • Introduction
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - 1654-0204. ; :4, s. 3-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Attempting to discern the symbolic meanings of cultural and religious manifestations in Afro-Latin American religious communities – be they in the form of saintly images, speech patterns or narratives – scholars, increasingly seconded by practitioners, have described the on-going processes of creation and re-creation as acculturation, transculturation, métissage or syncretism and more recently as creolization, hybridization or dialogue. In that sense, a common denominator for a large share of studies of Afro-Latin American religions is that they deal with various aspects of representations. Representing is part of everyday life as people collectively name and define the world. In this way, representations influ- ence the dissemination of knowledge as well as the construction of social identities and social transformations.

  • Registros da escravidão : as falas de pretos-velhos e de Pai João
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - Stockholm : Stockholms universitet. - 1654-0204. ; :4, s. 37-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article presents and compares speech varieties associated with two elements of Afro-Brazilian traditions: pretos velhos, i.e. spirits of Black slaves in Umbanda, an Afro-Latin American religion; and Pai João, i.e. Father John, a character from a cycle of traditional stories gathered by various folklorists. While Pai João has been compared to Uncle Tom, the pretos-velhos that we meet in Umbanda communities, are understood as old African slaves that sometimes possess adepts during the state of trance. Both reveal a linguistic behaviour that is distinct from local norms: a language variety marked by a set of features associated with the speech used by Africans during slavery. The presence of the same linguistic characteristics in contemporary oral representations complements the older written sources that have been analyzed until present.

  • Combates entre la memoria y la historia de Chile : Conflictos sobre el pasado reciente
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - Stockholm : Institute of Latin American Studies, Stockholm University. - 1654-0204. ; :5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reestablishment of democracy in Chile has seen an intense debate about the events of the recent past, especially on the issue of human rights. From the very beginning, the Concertacion Government has been determined to discover the truth of the repression carried out by the national security forces with a series of commissions that have gathered the testimonies of victims and their relatives. These efforts have been resisted by conservative sectors linked to the dictatorship and the Armed Forces. There has been intense conflict in the media during the past 20 years about events that occurred during the rule of Salvador Allende and the Military Regime. In this regard, a great diversity of information has been produced which, together with the debate evoked, has enabled historians not only to rigorously and thoroughly reconstruct the operation of the state terror but also to explain how a significant sector of Chile’s civil society allowed that situation. This article presents, on one hand, different methodological tools in order to study the recent past and, on the other hand, the social discussion on how to do it.

  • Independência política e ideologia linguística no Brasil do século XIX
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - 1654-0204. ; 8, s. 7-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • “Don’t expect me to repair in four years what you have destroyed in four hundred years” : On the ethos in (inter)action of Lula and Alckmin in an election TV debate
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - Stockholm : Institute of Latin American Studies, Stockholm University. - 1654-0204. ; 8, s. 83-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Has Venezuelan Decentralization survived Chavismo?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - 1654-0204. ; 1:1, s. 13-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyzes the recent phase of Venezuelan democracy, with a particular focus on the transformations and challenges related to decentralization. The development and proceedings of the movement around Chávez (Chavismo) and its connections to the political process are discussed, as well as certain aspects of populist political leadership and how these elements are related to (and in conflict with) the decentralization process. The populism and power concentration of the Chávez movement constitute a source of conflict for certain democratization principles of decentralization. The decentralization process is emphasized as both a kind of historical context and a focus of analysis. The context of the article is the Venezuelan political party system whereas decentralization constitutes the independent variable. It will be demonstrated that the Venezuelan two-party system had been undermined by the decentralization process already before the rise of Chavismo. Both Chavismo and a majority of the political opposition movements and are thus partly rooted in the decentralization process itself.

  • Venezuelan Leftist Parties in the Era of Hugo Chávez
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies. - Stockholm University : Institute of latin American Studies. - 1654-0204. ; :3, s. 131-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article the roots, development and the current situation of the political movement around Venezuelan President Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (Chavismo) are analyzed through historical reconsiderations regarding the main Leftist political parties of the country. Many scholars have tended to neglect important historical connections between, for instance, Chavismo and Venezuelan historical Leftist parties. Conflict and change in and around Chavismo principally from the early 1990´s onwards are factors to be explored in a context of Venezuelan democracy and leftist political actors, both those associated with Chávez and those actors of the present and recent political opposition. Likewise, the personalistic character of Chavismo and its possible implications for the party system and individual parties are considered.
