  • Classifying political regimes 1800-2016: a typology and a new dataset
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 18:1, s. 84-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present text, we introduce a classification scheme where we decompose democracies and autocracies into several categories. Based on this classification scheme, we create a global dataset covering the time period 1800–2016. In the dataset, we make yearly observations for all countries that have been independent at any point in time since the Second World War. Regarding democracies, we first distinguish between republics and monarchies. We then split the category of republics into presidential, semi-presidential, and parliamentary systems. Within the category of monarchies, almost all systems are parliamentary, but a few countries are conferred to the category semi-monarchies. Authors differ markedly in terms of how autocratic regimes should be classified. In the present dataset, we classify autocratic countries into the following main categories: absolute monarchy, military rule, party-based rule, personalist rule, and oligarchy. Within the categories party-based rule and oligarchy, we also identify a number of subcategories.

  • Comparative parliamentary democracy : a project report
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Palgrave Macmillan. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 4:1, s. 42-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Comparative Parliamentary Democracy project examines West European parliamentary politics from a principal–agent perspective. The project involves thirty-five scholars from Western Europe and the Americas. It has made both conceptual and empirical contributions in the fields of comparative politics, parliamentary democracy in general and coalition politics in particular. In this report, the project leaders present the project, its ‘structured collaboration’ approach and share some observations on the practice of conducting a large-scale cross-national project.

  • Pragmatism and protest : Russia’s communist party through Covid-19 and beyond
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Nature. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Covid-19 epidemic came at a sensitive time for Russia’s leadership, which was attempting a political reset and structural reforms, including the removal of President Putin’s presidential term limits. This article examines how issues related to the pandemic provided new opportunities for the systemic opposition, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, who emerged as the main beneficiaries after capitalising on opportunities created by the epidemic. The underappreciated role of systemic opposition parties in electoral authoritarian systems, which balance “voice” and “loyalty” to benefit both themselves and the regime, is examined in the context of the Covid-19 crisis.

  • Cult of irrelevance or broad church? Responsiveness, diversity, and intellectual pluralism in the academic study of security
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 22:4, s. 511-532
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While traditional and non-traditional issues of security are at the very top of the policy agenda, security studies has been subject to much criticism. These concerns have often been framed in terms of challenges to the field’s relevance. This paper seeks to further the debate on relevance in security studies. Specifically, the paper examines the field in three major dimensions of relevance: responsiveness, diversity, and intellectual pluralism. Unlike previous disciplinary investigations, which have solely focused on United States (US) security studies, this paper examines trends pertaining to relevance in security studies in the USA as well as in Europe. The paper finds some evidence of responsiveness, a slight trend toward a more equitable share of female authors, and conflicting evidence when it comes to intellectual pluralism. The paper suggests that the field appears more as a ‘broad church’ than ‘irrelevant cult’ when its output in the USA, as well as in Europe, is taken into account.

  • The Ideology of Heads of Government, 1870-2012
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1682-0983 .- 1680-4333. ; 17:2, s. 211-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Note introduces the Heads of Government dataset, which provides summary information about the ideological orientation of heads of government (left, center, or right, with separately provided information about religious orientation) in 33 states in Western Europe, the Americas, and the Asia–Pacific region between 1870 and 2012. The Note also describes some intriguing empirical patterns when it comes to over-time changes in the political prominence of left-wing, centrist, and right-wing parties.

  • the development of gender and politics as a new research field within the framework of the ECPR
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 9, s. s85-S98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Starting from the first 'Women in Politics' workshop, Berlin 1977, the article looks at the development of this new research field within the framework of the ECPR. From a young gender blind political science in the 1950-1970s until today's situation, where papers applying a gender perspective are presented in almost every ECPR workshop, and as many as 300 scholars participated in the First European Conference on Gender and Politics', organised by the ECPR Standing Group on 'Women/Gender and Politics'. The article scrutinises the discussion about 'the male oligarchs of the ECPR' and the accusation of 'separatism'.

  • From radical right to neo-nationalist
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 18:3, s. 379-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we investigate the ideology of the populist radical right (PRR) and the extent to which its political message has changed over time. In doing so, we also judge the usefulness of the PRR-tag. Like seminal scholarship on these parties, we contend that both economic and social positions are relevant for contemporary radical right parties. Further, we argue that contemporary parties’ stances are indicative of a nationalist ideology. Using the Manifesto Project Dataset, we investigate radical right policy preferences between 1970 and 2015. Results indicate that right-wing economic stances are more prevalent prior to the twenty-first century and that radical right parties increasingly make economically leftist claims. Results also demonstrate that radical right parties are not always the farthest to right in national political spaces. Further, we show that contemporary parties make nationalist claims. Indeed, nationalism not only increasingly characterizes these parties but also increasingly distinguishes them from other major party families, whose average positions over time are globalist. We argue that contemporary radical right parties are better conceptualized and described as neo-nationalist, a label consistent with both their social and economic positions.

  • The times they are a-changing : the internationalisation of Swedish political science
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Political Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1680-4333 .- 1682-0983. ; 6:3, s. 268-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the current state of political science in Sweden, by looking at the contents of recent years' doctoral dissertations. To what extent do young Swedish political scientists seek to make their research available to an international audience? The findings indicate that Swedish political scientists are becoming increasingly more oriented towards the international research community. The use of the English language in doctoral dissertations has increased. Also, Swedish political scientists have taken increasingly more interest in international affairs, instead of writing exclusively about Swedish politics. Adapted from the source document.
