  • The boards functional emphasis – A contingency approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - Sumy : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 4:2, s. 24-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The understanding of the board of a corporation and its behavior is limited, despite the board’s societalimportance. We present a contingency approach to the board’s functional emphasis, considering afourth function in addition to monitoring, decision making, and service or resource provision. Theadditional function is conflict resolution (or principal identification). The approach contrasts withmainstream research by assuming that the firm is a nexus of investments, avoiding the empiricalassumption that the shareholder is the sole principal. We derive propositions that are not restricted toany empirical category of a corporation, and address praxis implications for managing functionaldisharmony.

  • Accounting and Smart Cities : New Evidence for Governmentality and Politics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 17:3, s. 158-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of a smart city has attracted the attention of many scholars and policymakers in many countries worldwide. The role of accounting as a tool of governance in smart city politics, however, has so far been largely overlooked, especially in less developed countries (LDCs). This paper sets off to fill this research gap and hitherto unexplored linkages between accounting and smart cities. Drawing on the concept of governmentality, the authors conducted a case study based on document analysis, meetings observation, and 42 semi-structured interviews at a branch of a hybrid electricity company owned by New Cairo City in Egypt, during 2018. Findings show that the case company has implemented smart distribution networks of electricity in which new management accounting technology (enterprise resource planning (ERP) system) is used to trace costs, revenues, client complaints and feedback in a timely manner. The new network (of infrastructure and technologies) has represented timely accounting information as a major political power to influence accurate governance decision-making, such as smart electricity pricing and control, and to challenge governance decisions that are not sound. This paper is one of the first studies to explore the socio-political dynamics of accounting in smart city governance in the context of LDCs.

  • Political and business leaderships in managing public service organisation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - : Virtus InterPress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 15:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the relationship between the state’s political ideologies and the implementation of cost management strategies during the re-privatisation of a public sector organisation. Drawing on the Dillard et al.’s (2004) conceptual framework, we conducted a case study in a public sector organisation operating in the electricity market of Egypt. Data was gathered through document analysis, interviews, meetings observations and continuous interactions with key informants from 2013 to 2014. The findings show that the implementation of cost management strategies had a political basis, grounded in the state’s reformative ideologies concerning re-privatisation of the public sector organisation. The re-privatisation failed because the state failed to convince a potential international investor. A theoretical contribution is to show the relevance of cost management strategies when used as a political tool to achieve a business goal, such as improving a public sector organisation’s performance management in a developing country. This is the first empirical case study to analyse management accounting change based on the state’s political ideologies in the Maghreb region of Africa. The key difference between this global trend elsewhere and in the Egyptian State, as in some other Islamic countries, is that Egypt was both nationalistic and militarised.

  • Governance and control of externalized water service management : comparing solutions adopted in Italy and Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 8:3, s. 188-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the challenges imposed on corporate governance of water services in Italy and Sweden are analyzed and compared. From the comparative analysis we notice that with externalization of services more stakeholders become involved in the provision of the services. These stakeholders have common as well as divergent interests and the challenges thus become to find an alignment of interest among stakeholders in order to secure a sustainable provision of the services. The comparative analysis indicate that such alignment is especially difficult when stakeholders have heterogeneous background (public and private sector).

  • Institutional ownership and returns on investment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 13:4Cont3, s. 419-430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how institutional investors influence investment decisions and returns on investment. To measure investment performance, we use marginal q, which measures the ratio of the return on investment to the cost of capital. Institutional owners are found to have a positive but marginally diminishing effect on performance. Our paper uses longitudinal data on Swedish firms from 1999 to 2005; during this period, the ownership structure of Swedish firms underwent dramatic changes as institutional investors increased their ownership shares, while ownership by Swedish households decreased. However, controlling owners - who were often founding families - maintained their control of firms by resorting to extensive use of dual-class shares. This was an important determinant of firm performance that eradicated the positive influence of institutional ownership.

  • How readable are environmental policy statements? An exploratory study within the IT industry
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 8:3, s. 258-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental policy statements are nowadays fairly ubiquitous, particularly among large organizations. Such statements continue to be seen as an important element in the sustainability initiatives of organizations. However, if they are to have a chance of achieving the desired positive outcomes that those in their favor highlight, they must first be readable and comprehensible to the targeted stakeholders. To investigate the readability of environmental policy statements of IT companies, the individual environmental policy statements of Information Technology companies were collected. A readability calculation tool was then employed to assess the readability of each of these environmental policy statements. Results are reported, and the implications are considered, while limitations are noted and directions for future research are identified.

  • Let’s face it : Using Chernoff faces to portray social media brand image
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 11:4, s. 609-615
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The age of social media sees that brands are consciously utilizing social media to reach existing customers, acquire new ones, establish credibility, maintain reputation, or simply become part of the conversation. Those who manage brands need to understand the strategic importance of their visibility, the sentiment toward them, and the passion with which they are discussed in the most popular social media relative to competitors. This study describes a source of data of brand visibility in social media, and then presents a simple yet powerful graphical tool for portraying this information. This permits, it is contended, a means of quickly assimilating and understanding this information. The managerial implications of the approach are discussed, its limitations are acknowledged, and avenues for future research are identified.

  • Owner-managers' equity portfolio choice
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 4:1, s. 37-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some studies have shown that managers concentrate large fractions of their wealth in the equity oftheir own firm. In this paper we use a unique dataset and investigate how Swedish owner-managersinvest remaining wealth conditional on a major investment in their own firm. We find no evidencethat owner-managers seek diversification benefits when they invest remaining wealth. Instead someowner-managers invest remaining wealth in the industry where they already have a substantialcapital investment. We conclude that some owner-managers seek to exploit their industry-specificsuperior information when they invest wealth not tied up in their own firms.
