  • The Besikovitch Covering Theorem and Near Minimizers for the Couple (L2,BV)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1406-0086 .- 2228-0685 .- 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 59:1, s. 29-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Let Ω be a rectangle in R2. A new algorithm for the construction of a near-minimizer for the couple (L2(Ω), BV(Ω)) is presented. The algorithm is based on the Besicovitch covering theorem and analysis of local approximations of the given function f ∈ L2(Ω).

  • The life and work of Olof Thorin (1912-2004)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 57:1, s. 18-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews Olof Thorin's contributions to mathematical analysis, actuarial mathematics, and probability theory, though in reversed order. In probability theory he is known for his path-breaking work on infinite divisibility. In actuarial mathematics he contributed significantly to the ruin problem. However, his international fame very much relies on his work in mathematical analysis and his share in the Riesz-Thorin theorem. Data about his life and some personal recollections are also given.

  • On the K-theory of the C*-algebra associated with a one-sided shift space
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-7530 .- 1736-6046. ; 59:4, s. 272-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One-sided shift spaces are a special kind of non-invertible topological dynamical system with which one can associate a C*-algebra. We show how to construct the C*-algebra associated with a one-sided shift space as the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra of a C*-correspondence and use this to compute its K-theory.

  • Some modern developments in the theory of real division algebras
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 59:1, s. 53-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of real division algebras was initiated by the construction of the quaternion and the octonion algebras in the mid-19th century. In spite of its long history, the problem, of classifying all finite-dimensional real division algebras is still unsolved. We review the theory of this problem, with focus on recent contributions.

  • Seal-induced losses and successful mitigation using Acoustic Harassment Devices in Estonian Baltic trap-net fisheries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 70, s. 207-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last decades the number of grey seals Halichoerus grypus has increased more than tenfold in the Baltic Sea. having reached 38 000 in 2019, which has created increasing problems to the coastal fisheries. In the current study, 151 Estonian coastal fishermen were interviewed to sum all direct and indirect monetary losses. The total cost of the damage caused by seals to the Estonian fisheries was around 0.9 million euros in 2009. With the aim of mitigating seal impact, Acoustic Harassment Devices (AHDs, Lofitech) were tested. This study presents quantitative data on seal damage in Estonian trap-net fisheries and analyses the results of the attempts made to mitigate the damage by means of AHDs. It can be concluded that AHDs provided sufficient protection against the seal attacks.

  • Simplified a priori Estimate for the Time Periodic Burgers' Equation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 59:1, s. 34-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a version of the existence and uniqueness result of time periodic solutions to the viscous Burgers’ equation with irregular forcing terms (with Sobolev regularity –1 in space). The key result here is an a priori estimate which is simpler than the previously treated case of forcing terms with regularity –½ in time.

  • Some new scales of characterization of Hardy's inequality
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 59:1, s. 7-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Let 1 < p ≤ q < ∞. Inspired by some recent results concerning Hardy-type inequalities where the equivalence of four scales of integral conditions was proved, we use related ideas to find ten new equivalence scales of integral conditions. By applying this result to the original Hardy-type inequality, we obtain a new proof of a number of characterizations of the Hardy inequality and also some new weight characterizations.

  • Estimation of dialysis patients survival through combined approach of small molecule uremic markers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 63:3, s. 227-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Survival rate of dialysis patients is still alarmingly low and various factors may have in it an important role. The purpose of this study was to observe the relationship between the survival of dialysis patients and the serum level of urea, creatinine, and uric acid (UA). Serum urea and creatinine concentrations may express patients nutritional status and muscle mass, and high UA value may refer to higher risk for cardiovascular events. The idea of combining the concentrations and removal of urea and UA into a single model for predicting the patients outcome is introduced. The study included 33 hemodialysis patients from Link ping, Sweden and 10 from Tallinn, Estonia. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used for survival analysis. Logistic and Cox regression analysis was applied to create models for predicting patients three-year survival. It was observed that higher serum UA is significantly related to poor survival in dialysis patients (p = 0.026). A reverse effect was observed in case of urea (p = 0.095). The level of creatinine was not related to survival (p = 0.905). The best logistic regression model for predicting patients outcome included both UA and urea based parameters (Chi Square 21.0, p = 0.0001). Survival of dialysis patients seems to be determined by a set of causal factors and combined models may have a predictive relevance. A possibility for automatic online monitoring of small molecule uremic markers is proposed. Since the number of participating patients was small, larger studies including more patients and testing the models in independent validation cohort is the future goal.

  • Fall detection in the older people : from laboratory to real-life
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. - : Estonian Academy Publishers. - 1736-6046 .- 1736-7530. ; 63:3, s. 253-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Falls are an increasing problem of aging population, both in home-dwelling and institutionalized people. Automatic fall detection systems are a choice in supporting the independent and secure living of the older people. Typically, health technology applications such as fall detection systems are tested in experimental falls of young adults. However, sensitivity and specificity, and acceptability and usability of these systems in real-life conditions in end users should be the ultimate aim. This paper overviews our set of studies on the technology and algorithms for fall detection, from laboratory-based experiments to long-term real-life field tests. The data obtained during the incremental set of studies suggest that automatic accelerometric fall detection systems might offer a tool for improving safety among older people. Additional studies are needed for further improvement of fall detection sensitivity and decreasing the false alarm rate, and for the implementation of the technology to elderly care ICT platforms.
