  • Institutional entrepreneurship in an academic organisation : sustainability at Malardalen University
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 3:3/4, s. 201-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and elaborates on a case of institutional entrepreneurship for sustainable development in higher education and research collaboration in a Swedish academic milieu. We argue, much in line with the contemporary international policy debate about climate change, that universities can and should have a leading role in producing new knowledge and innovation for the promotion of sustainable development. We consider that higher education and the whole university organisation, rather than just research, should be analysed regarding institutionalising sustainable development, which is not emphasised in the policy debate. In our conceptualisation of sustainable development, we argue that entrepreneurship and, more specifically, institutional entrepreneurship, can be used as an interesting normative and theoretical model. By drawing upon the concept of institutional entrepreneurship, we try to open up for the reflective exploration of three projects that illustrate the institutionalisation of sustainable development. While doing so, we identify the critical areas for further theoretical and empirical research from the perspective of institutional entrepreneurship.

  • Analysis of Social, Environmental and Economic Sustainability Core: A Bibliometric Overview
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : Inderscience. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 15:4, s. 356-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainability has become a global concern in the 21st century. However, sustainability is an ambivalent concept that can be interpreted in many ways. In the beginning, it was environmentally-related. Later, however, it was linked to social or economic sustainability, which was known as the triple bottom-line or the three-pillar model (social/economic and environmental sustainability). Later, additional dimensions were incorporated, such as institutional, cultural, or even spatial. As a result of the growth and importance of sustainability, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the core of sustainability. With that aim in mind, we will analyse the following aspects of scientific production: volume of scientific output, primary agents involved (countries, institutions), web of science (WoS) categories, collaborations, acknowledgement patterns, and thematic analysis. The findings in this paper suggest an increasing growth in scientific output in all areas of sustainability, albeit with different patterns (e.g., collaboration, specialisation) among the three pillars.

  • Sustainable economic organisation : simply a matter of reconceptualisation or a need for a new ethics?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 2:1, s. 97-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's increasing environmental problems are closely related to how we organise economic activities. This paper departs from the assumption that in order to reach sustainable economic organisation, we must address the dominating Market Discourse (MD), guiding mainstream organising. To understand whether reconceptualisations are sufficient or if changes in underlying ethics are needed, we compare the MD with strong and weak sustainability discourses. The analysis suggests that there is a need for changes in underlying assumptions as well as reconceptualisation of economic organisation that coheres with these assumptions. We also discuss how the related concepts of allocative, governance and throughput efficiency permeates MD, and, as principles for organisation, contribute to the inertia in working towards sustainable economic organisation.

  • Innovations that combine environmental and business aspects
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 1:4, s. 371-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is an attempt to improve the understanding of eco-innovations and to generate knowledge that can be used to stimulate their diffusion and adoption. The main objective of this study is to develop a new classification system for eco-innovations. The methodological approach chosen is a case study of 150 winning entries to the Swedish Environmental Innovation Competition. The entries that reached the finals were investigated and classified according to the new classification system into six different types: (1) product care, (2) minor product improvements, (3) major product improvements, (4) functional innovation, (5) system innovation, and (6) scientific breakthrough. The results show that more than 75% of the eco-innovations are classified as 'product care', 'minor product improvements' and 'major product improvements'; but in order to achieve a breakthrough in the area of sustainability, much more work is needed to achieve 'system innovation' and 'scientific breakthrough'.

  • Success factors for eco-innovations and other innovations
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 3:3/4, s. 301-327
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors which can contribute to the explanation of why eco-innovations have a poorer market development than other innovations. We based our study on 285 innovations that moved on to the finals in three Swedish innovation contests: the Environmental Technology Competition (ETC), the Venture Cup (VC) and the Innovation Cup (IC). We analysed four groups of factors related respectively to (1) the innovator, (2) the innovation, (3) the development process and (4) certain aspects of the surroundings with importance to development. One conclusion is that there are many factors in which eco-innovations differ from other innovations. The eco-group is older, mainly male, with lower technical or other education; they are more innovative and their network has a stronger connection to family. Eco-innovations are less geared towards industrial customers and currently have no major competition, according to the innovators. The development process for these innovations is different from that of other innovations; the time that has been invested in the process is much shorter and the access to risk capital and contacts with business angels are rare. The eco-innovators view the general surroundings more positively than others.

  • Moral Responsibility and the Business and Sustainable Development Assemblage : A Jonasian ethics for the technological age
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 2:1, s. 116-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, it is argued that sustainable development is stuck in the myth of progress, wherein instrumental rationality, trust in good prognoses and the ethics of 'here' and 'now' are unwarily followed. With this assumption at hand, an alternative view on morality is developed where a morality of fear, a categorical imperative and two axioms, are developed. The conclusion is that if a Jonasian (Jonas, 1984) ethics is approved, then it is possible to pursue real alternatives to the current myth of progress and to judge those decisions that endanger human existence, or the idea of man, as immoral.

  • A problem-solving perspective on strategies for appropriating environmental value – some implications from considering institutional solutions to social dilemmas
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - 1740-8830 .- 1740-8822. ; 6:2, s. 164-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper outlines a framework of value creation and appropriation strategies available to firms that address environmental problems. It does so by utilising the idea that valuable problem-solution pairs correspond to opportunities and by describing why many environmental problems are ‘valuable’ problems as defined by the problem-solving perspective of the firm. Considering social dilemmas as the main hurdle for the appropriation of environmental value by firms, the paper derives four appropriation strategies for environmental innovations by drawing on the literature on economic institutions. The appropriation strategies are labelled eco-lean, eco-branding, eco-lobbyism and eco-transaction design.

  • Determinants of economic performance of environmental technology-based offers : A cross-sectional study of small Swedish firms
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 10:3, s. 237-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper examines the association between offer differentiation based on environmental orientation and economic performance. The analysis consists of an ordinary least-squares regression based on accounting data and a survey of the leaders of small environmental technology-based firms in Sweden. The results indicate that eco-efficiency creating a low total cost of ownership is more strongly associated with offer performance than is regulatory support, eco-branding, eco-quality differentiation and provision of strategic environmental information. This suggests that environmental differentiation of offers is the most successful when it is associated with a low total cost of ownership for customers.
