  • Sustainable organisations and knowledge process outsourcing : Conditions for success
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-1009 .- 1741-1017. ; 10:2, s. 110-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outsourcing of knowledge processes has become a popularbusiness practice. This situation provides both new opportunities and threats forfirms’ and their development. In this context, it would be interesting to discussthe link between knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and sustainableorganisations that pursue not only economic issues but also social andenvironmental ones. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is toreview extant research on KPO and bring it together with the concept ofsustainable organisations. To do so, the paper relied on a combination of recentreviews of scholarly papers on KPO. This proceeding enabled the identificationof three main conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to increase the successof the integration of the two terms. The conditions are governance, partnershipand organisation members. The recommendations derived from the findingscan assist researchers and other actors in better understanding the requirementsof KPO for sustainable organisations.

  • Simple and playful interaction for informal communication and learning
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Learning. - : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. - 1741-1009 .- 1741-1017. ; 3:2-3, s. 191-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teachers in general usually do not have one single office and they seldom have time for face-to-face interaction with their colleagues since they typically spend most of the time in a classroom. Teachers in rural areas have even less colleagues to interact with face-to-face. In our work with teachers in a rural area near Stockholm, in an archipelago school distributed over six islands, we have encouraged informal communication and learning through a digital notice board connecting all six units. This paper discusses three issues that we find important to focus on in our work; the role of shared interactive displays, simplicity and play as a social activity and the role of communication for informal learning.

  • Using chat as a complement to discussion board in small-group online seminars : How is student participation affected?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Learning. - 1741-1009 .- 1741-1017. ; 3:4-5, s. 483-500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how the use of synchronous chat, as a complement to asynchronous discussion board, affects participation in small-group online seminars. Questionnaires and interviews were used to study perceived social networks and students' sense of participation while electronic logs were used to analyse the interactions in the seminars. All measures indicate that the level of student participation was higher in the synchronous seminars. Two explanations were proposed. Firstly, the students felt that they worked together in the synchronous seminars. Secondly, there seemed to be too few students to get discussions started in the asynchronous setting. Moreover, some students dominated the asynchronous discussions while others dominated the synchronous discussions, which imply that combining asynchronous and synchronous media may enhance participation. It was also reflected on the consequence of culture on participation in the two types of seminars.

  • Students’ interaction with web-based literature : towards dissolution of language boundaries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-1009 .- 1741-1017. ; 4:5, s. 478-495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to investigate how new knowledge can be developed in computer-mediated social practice. Its focus is on how language frames university students' interaction and action while studying web-based literature in small task-based groups. The empirical data were collected from a case study where 57 Rwandan student teachers were completing an examination task mediated by computer at the end of an academic course. The study draws on naturally occurring talk, observations and in-depth interviews. The data were analysed from a sociocultural perspective. The findings reveal that students coping with web-based literature face a twofold reality of classroom discourse rooted in their sociocultural and educational contexts: the one conveyed through foreign languages of instruction, the other whose vehicle is their native language. The study suggests an alternative way of constructing a substantial learning discourse based on dissolution of language boundaries.

  • Innovation management through the use of diversity networks
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Learning. - 1741-1017. ; 4:4, s. 357-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A methodology for innovation and analysis in a context of complex problem spaces is presented, introducing the idea of a diversity network. The methodology draws upon a framework which puts ‘complexification’ into systemic practice. Such an application helps individual participants to outline their narratives, create and agree upon categories, and use these to classify their narratives. Clusters of narratives, reflecting innovation through diversity networks of opinion and competences, are encouraged to emerge in analytical practice. This approach can be applied to promote creativity and sharing in a knowledge management context.

  • Effective psychosocial intervention for family caregivers lengthens time elapsed before nursing home placement of individuals with dementia: a five-year follow-up study.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Psychogeriatrics. - 1741-203X. ; 20, s. 1177-1192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTBackground: This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a psychosocial intervention for family caregivers in delaying nursing home placement of individuals with dementia. Methods: The participants comprised 153 family caregivers of persons with dementia who underwent intervention and 155 family caregivers who did not. The intervention consisted of five weekly counselling sessions and a three-month conversation group. All patients with dementia underwent a standardized assessment of cognitive and functional ability. The degree of burden and the subjective health of family caregivers were assessed. Participation continued until the patient moved to a nursing home or died, or until five years of living at home had passed. Results: There were significant delays (6 months) in nursing home placement, and a longer time at home for persons with dementia with adult children as caregivers in the intervention group compared to the control group at follow-up (p = 0.004). A greater delay of institutionalization was found where intervention-group caregivers were daughters (p = 0.028). The proportional hazards regression showed factors associated with nursing home placement to be the family caregiver's influence on intervention (OR = 1.55, p = 0.019), caregiver gender (OR = 0.66, p = 0.033) and the patient's severity of dementia (OR = 1.45, p = 0.002).Conclusion: Family caregiver intervention for adult children was significantly associated with prolonged time to nursing home placement.

  • alpha-synuclein antibodies recognize a protein present at lower levels in the CSF of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Psychogeriatrics. - 1741-203X. ; 22:2, s. 321-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) accounts for 15-20%, of the millions of people worldwide with dementia. Accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid harm and optimize clinical management. There is therefore an urgent need to identify reliable biomarkers. Methods: Mass spectrometry was used to determine the specificity of antibody alpha-synuclein (211) for alpha-synuclein. Using gel electrophoresis we measured protein levels detected by alpha-synuclein specific antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of DLB patients and compared them to age matched controls. Results: A 24 kDa band was detected using alpha-synuclein specific antibodies which was significantly reduced in the CSF of DLB patients compared to age matched controls (p < 0.05). Further analysis confirmed that even DLB patients with mild dementia showed significant reductions in this protein in comparison to controls. Conclusions: The current study emphasizes the necessity for further studies of CSF alpha-synuclein as a biomarker of DLB and extends our previous knowledge by establishing a potential relationship between alpha-synuclein and the severity of cognitive impairment. The identification of this 24 kDa protein is the next important step in these studies.

  • Maintaining cognitive function with internet use : a two-country, six-year longitudinal study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International psychogeriatrics. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1041-6102 .- 1741-203X. ; 31:7, s. 929-936
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Maintaining good cognitive function with aging may be aided by technology such as computers, tablets, and their applications. Little research so far has investigated whether internet use helps to maintain cognitive function over time.Design: Two population-based studies with a longitudinal design from 2001/2003 (T1) to 2007/2010 (T2).Setting: Sweden and the Netherlands.Participants: Older adults aged 66 years and above from the Swedish National Study on Ageing and Care (N = 2,564) and from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (N = 683).Measurements: Internet use was self-reported. Using the scores from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) from T1 and T2, both a difference score and a significant change index was calculated. Linear and logistic regression analysis were performed with difference score and significant change index, respectively, as the dependent variable and internet use as the independent variable, and adjusted for sex, education, age, living situation, and functional limitations. Using a meta-analytic approach, summary coefficients were calculated across both studies. Results: Internet use at baseline was 26.4% in Sweden and 13.3% in the Netherlands. Significant cognitive decline over six years amounted to 9.2% in Sweden and 17.0% in the Netherlands. Considering the difference score, the summary linear regression coefficient for internet use was-0.32 (95% CI:-0.62,-0.02). Considering the significant change index, the summary odds ratio for internet use was 0.54 (95% CI: 0.37, 0.78).Conclusions: The results suggest that internet use might play a role in maintaining cognitive functioning. Further research into the specific activities that older adults are doing on the internet may shine light on this issue.
