  • The Scottish Independence Referendum and the Myth of Successful Small States
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Linguistics and the human sciences. - : Equinox Publishing. - 1742-2906 .- 1743-1662. ; 12:1, s. 47-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2013 the Scottish government launched its flagship publication, Scotland’s Future, intended to mobilize the electorate to vote for independence. A particularly salient feature of this document is the large number of references to small northern European countries. Combining theories of cognitive linguistics with a discursive approach to political myth, this article argues that Scotland’s Future employs the political myth of national rebirth in tandem with the construction of small European countries as democratic role models. This results in a mythical conception of small states, here referred to as the myth of successful small states. This myth is then used to legitimate the Scottish government’s policies that are conveyed to the Scottish  lectorate.

  • The interpretation of plural definites in discourse : the case of spatial adpositions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Linguistics and the human sciences. - Sheffield : Equinox Publishing. - 1742-2906 .- 1743-1662. ; 9:2, s. 201-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we offer a study on the interpretation of plural definites in discourse (‘the tank engines’) and their interaction with spatial adpositions (‘to’ and ‘at’). The novel empirical findings in the paper support the following assumptions on the contribu-tion of spatial adpositions to the interpretation of plural definites. First, the interpre-tation of plural definites can be influenced by the lexical aspect type of adpositions. While ‘to’ as ‘telic’ predicate can license both a ‘collective’ and a ‘distributive’ reading for plural definites, ‘at’ as an ‘atelic’ predicate only licenses a ‘collective’ reading. Second, the precise lexical content of adpositions determines which interpretation is accessed. It is claimed that ‘at’ denotes a ‘general location’ relation between locatum and landmark object, and thus licenses a collective reading for plural definites.

  • Crime at micro-places in public libraries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Security Journal. - 0955-1662 .- 1743-4645.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public libraries are multifunctional places where visitors come to borrow books, usecomputers and socialise—all these activities impose a diverse set of safety demandson those responsible for these facilities. Drawing from environmental criminologyand CPTED principles, this study proposes and tests a conceptual model to investigate the spatiotemporal nature of crime and other safety-related incidents in publiclibraries. Incidents recorded by personnel from 2017 to 2020 from two public libraries in Stockholm, Sweden are mapped using a three-dimensional model in CAD andcompared with notes from feldwork inspections and interviews with library personnel. Findings show that staf feel safe in the library, but mention unsafe situationsthat they avoid by taking precautionary measures. In addition, public disturbances, aggression, followed by crimes against property and vandalism vary both temporallyand across diferent types of library environments. The design and layout of public libraries play a role in the libraries’ safety conditions (e.g. territoriality, surveillance opportunities), but some places are more challenging than others because ofthe activities they attract (e.g. entrances). The study concludes by critically assessing the proposed methodology and making suggestions to improve safety in publiclibraries and advance the role of place managers in multifunctional places.

  • Security in Stockholm's underground stations : The importance of environmental attributes and context
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Security Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0955-1662 .- 1743-4645. ; 26:1, s. 33-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to report on the security conditions in underground stations and surrounding areas in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. The study is based on a comprehensive fieldwork combined with Geographical Information Systems techniques and regression models. Findings show that a relatively small share of reported events is crime; acts of public disorder are more common at the stations. Events tend to happen in the evenings - nights, holidays and weekends - and, at least for theft, in the hotter months of the year. Although the highest number of events is found in the central station, the so-called 'end-stations' show often higher rates than those located in the inner city. Results show that opportunities for crime are dependent on stations' environmental attributes, type of neighbourhood in which they are located and city context. These findings lend weight to principles of traditional urban criminology theory such as routine activity and social disorganisation. The article concludes with directions for future research and suggestions for policy.

  • Global maritime security studies : The rise of a geopolitical area of policy and research
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Security Journal. - : Springer. - 0955-1662 .- 1743-4645. ; 29:2, s. 276-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global maritime security has been a subject of analysis and debate in the West since the onset of the European expansion. This article distinguishes four main periods with regard to the doctrines and practices of global maritime security since c. 1450, during which the role of the state in relation to private actors has shifted. As a concept of global policy making, however, maritime security only emerged with the increasing importance of non-traditional security issues in the maritime sphere from around 1990. Maritime security studies has emerged in close connection with these developments, but in order to achieve intellectual excellence as a field of study, maritime security studies needs to distance itself from policy makers and industrial interests and develop an interdisciplinary research agenda based on in-depth studies of a broad range of traditional and non-traditional maritime security issues.

  • Prevention of white-collar crime through licensing: The case of the licensing of employees in the Swedish securities industry.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Security Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0955-1662 .- 1743-4645. ; 30:2, s. 385-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Licensing programmes for employees in the securities industry have been introduced in an increasing number of countries and have become a significant element of control of the associated markets, which are important for public finances. This article documents the licensing programme in the Swedish securities industry, and analyses its potential to foster rule compliance and prevent white-collar crime. The programme’s knowledge requirements, sanctions system, reporting obligation and organisational structure are central components that are analysed, particularly regarding their ability to create predictability, confidence and interdependent relationships that can counteract risk factors for white-collar crime, namely, social disorganisation, responsibility diffusion, institutional market imbalances and isolated subcultures.
