  • The making of an intercultural learning conext for entrepreneuring
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 5:1, s. 48-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Departing from the standpoint that internationalisation needs to become a more explicit part of assessing the quality of academic activity (i.e., education, research, and (business) community interaction), we elaborate upon how the intercultural composition of a student cohort could be leveraged as a road to the advancement of entrepreneurship education at the graduate level. We argue that the very heterogeneity of the students with respect to their socio-cultural background and personal experiences offers a rich potential for mutual social learning that reinforces formal education activities. Creating awareness of this collective resource opens up for self-organising processes among the students as they craft an entrepreneurial identity which guides them in their learning throughout the master programme.

  • Political entrepreneurship in new small ventures : The case of IMS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 3:1, s. 26-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces the view of political entrepreneurship, which is based on the development of unique interaction with political units to assist firms in their business. Based on a business network perspective, the aim is to develop a theoretical frame for analysis of this interaction. The question raised is how small entrepreneurs can develop relationships with political units in order to strengthen their business opportunities. Relationship commitment and knowledge are introduced as managerial elements determining the firms' influential and adaptive behaviour. A case study of a new venture in life science is used to illustrate the reasoning. The results manifest how even small firms can use their resources and knowledge to develop specific relationships with political units that support their business efforts. Issues related to loosely coupled relationships are brought forward as a theoretical foundation to aid the understanding of political entrepreneurship.

  • Entrepreneurship Education in Policy and Practice
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 5:1, s. 9-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article pays interest to the intersection between policy and practice when implementing entrepreneurship in the educational system. Taking a point of departure in Mahieu’s (2006) call for knowledge of the interplay between different policy levels and Backström-Widjeskog’s (2010) conclusion about tensions occurring when teachers are introduced to the concept, the intention is to develop knowledge about conflicts and tensions at the intersection between policy and practice. From analysing policy documents and narratives from entrepreneurship education implementation projects during a time when entrepreneurship education started to be promoted in Sweden three figures of thought are found (economic/humanistic, biological/social, and individual/collective) which are proposed to be involved in creating tensions and conflicts in the intersection between policy and practice. Theoretically, these figures of thought can be seen as a contribution to understanding processes in which the concept of entrepreneurship education has deliberately been moved, by way of policy, to the educational practice. Reflecting on these thought figures may enhance teachers’ translation processes when starting to work with entrepreneurship education in practice.

  • The influence of intangible assets on external succession decisions in small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 1:4, s. 367-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • External company succession provides an alternative route into entrepreneurship. However, due to a strong focus on new ventures, this form of succession would appear to be less in the public eye. This article endeavours to contribute to changing this situation. In doing so, it explores the meaning of intangible assets in company succession from an external successor perspective. Despite the fact that intangibles are supposedly the key drivers of business performance, the connection between intangibles and external company succession in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has so far been neglected. Our research draws on a quantitative web survey of German trade associations and qualitative interviews with external SME successors. Our findings suggest that intangible assets have a notable influence on the decision of an external successor to take over a company. This research offers new insights into company succession, specifically with regard to the selection process for potential external successors.

  • New perspectives on innovative entrepreneurship and path dependence
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper uses path dependence as an interpretive lens to examine the relationship between innovative entrepreneurship and regional development. A literature review of path dependence explains why that concept is relevant for this paper. This paper reaches four conclusions about the relationship. First, in the study of innovative entrepreneurship in a regional context, the technological, social and cognitive dimensions should be taken into consideration. Second, the effect of the different types of innovative entrepreneurship on path dependence depends on specific, regional situations. Third, the dominant regional network forms an institutional foundation that may either hinder or support innovative entrepreneurship. Fourth, innovative entrepreneurs who introduce new knowledge from outside the region are more likely to alter the regional path.

  • Change of entrepreneurial agenda in a core competence context : exploring the transformation from technology focus to market focus
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - Olney : Inderscience. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 4:2, s. 148-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The newest small firms – the start-ups in general and the international new ventures (INV) in particular – face major difficulties from the beginning. Not only do they need to bring competitively unique products to a new, highly competitive market, but they also must be successful in convincing customers of their products' benefits. This ultimate small firm test is in fact very similar to the criteria that define the core competence concept. Still, core competence matters have historically been delimited to large, preferably diversified companies. In this paper, we apply core competence theory and entrepreneurship theories on a small firm's empirical context. We concentrate on technology focused INVs and on the change, or transformation, these start-ups must complete in order to adopt a more market-oriented focus. Without the transformation, we argue, the small firm will not be able to expand. The purpose of the paper is to explore parts of the processes changed during the transformation and to enhance our understanding of core competence applicability on small companies. We formulate propositions, empirically guided and theoretically anchored, that describe four different components that facilitate the small firm technology-to-market transformation.

  • Information technology and high-impact entrepreneurship
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1742-5360 .- 1742-5379. ; 14:4-5, s. 449-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a conceptual framework for analyzing the role of information technology in the formation of high-impact entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial decision-making is contextualized in the setting of competent teams, and where its role in economic growth is modelled as part of a minimum set of actors necessary for the generation of innovative output—so-called collaborative innovation blocs. By departing from a collective of actors, rather than the individual entrepreneur, transactions costs are shown to become central for understanding the antecedents and conditions for high-impact entrepreneurship as core strategic decisions are often based on asymmetric information and bounded rationality. Subsequently, this also implies a central role for information technology in facilitating the processes that precede high-impact entrepreneurship through its ability to bridge or reduce information asymmetries. Based on the presented framework, the development of information technology is hypothesized to particularly favor new entrepreneurs with growth ambitions, new firm entry, and high growth firms by accelerating the creation and allocation of knowledge.
