  • ‘Oh my god what is happening?’ : historic second home communities and post-disaster nostalgia
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 18:3, s. 337-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nostalgia is an important concept in the study of heritage tourism, especially as a push factor, but less attention is devoted to how nostalgia influences place attachment and vice versa, especially in relation to both individual and collective community experiences. While place attachment has been discussed in the context of second homes, nostalgia has received little attention, with none directed specifically at historic second home communities or those which had recently experienced a disaster. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted among second homeowners in Ocean Beach, New York, which is a century-old second home community with a rich local heritage that was hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The findings show that the respondents display different aspects of nostalgia, in particular endo- and meso- nostalgia. This work conceptualizes meso-nostalgia as an umbrella term for the previously discussed nostalgias which focus on the gray area between personal and collective memories. The findings also show the respondents’ deep connection to the second home landscape, but there was a marked difference between respondents with inherited second homes and those who had purchased them wherein inherited homeowners’ nostalgia was closer to those of permanent residents in previous studies.

  • Who visits World Heritage? : A comparative analysis of three cultural sites
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 12:1, s. 67-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heritage tourism is a growing segment of the modern tourism industry, and several studies have been undertaken to identify the individuals who participate in this type of tourism. These have indicated that heritage tourists, generally, are middle class, middle age, and well educated. However, despite their iconic role, there has been relatively little attention paid to profile of visitors to World Heritage Sites. This study aims to better understand the demography of this specific tourism segment through the use of survey-based research at three geographically diverse World Heritage Sites: Independence Hall in the USA, Studenica Monastery in Serbia, and the Archaeological Site of Volubilis in Morocco. Through the use of descriptive statistics, several over-arching trends were noted among the three sites. World Heritage Site visitors were found to be very well educated, but they did not have any similarities in relation to age, income, or residence, which contrasts the "general" heritage tourist typology. However, there were several World Heritage specific trends. While this work is a snapshot of the three sites under study and thus is difficult to generalize, it provides the basis for more comprehensive demographic research on visitors to World Heritage Sites.

  • Creating tourist experiences by interpreting places using digital guides
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 9:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the relationship between technology and narrative in digital guides for tourists in Sweden. The main finding shows that narratives in the guides are based on a naïve view of history. In several instances, content is based on odd stories and speculation. Recent social trends have led to the erosion of grand narratives and the emergence of multiple views of history. New digital guides must address these challenges in order to develop tourism products that are relevant to different market segments.

  • Authenticity as a compromise : a critical discourse analysis of Sámi tourism websites
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 14:3, s. 249-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Authenticity is considered a very important means to attract tourists. Different enterprises and destinations compete for visitors and authenticity is an important factor for visitors’ travel decisions. Within the context of indigenous and cultural tourism, several studies have criticized the way in which indigenous and local populations are portrayed in order to attract tourists, since they often involve colonial images and descriptions that are no longer corresponding to the contemporary situation. This study presents an alternative perspective on the discussion on tourism marketing in relation to authenticity. Through critical discourse analysis and retroduction, this study has analysed the websites of Sámi tourism companies from Sweden. The discussion put forward in this study is not a generalizing picture of how the Sámi peoples choose to market themselves, but it problematizes how these particular enterprises relate to issues of authenticity in the representation of cultural heritage. This paper also presents a new approach to authenticity seen as a compromise. The results of this study present one side of a multifaceted discussion on the struggle between different discourses on representations and authenticity that are often the main channel to reach and attract potential visitors.

  • Consuming stories: Placing food in the arctic tourism experience
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Routledge. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 8:2-3, s. 213-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Circumpolar North holds an increasing allure for travellers, combining romantic perceptions of ‘wilderness’ with a nostalgia for a frontier land far removed from ‘civilization’ and the maladies of modernity. Following global food tourism trends, the unique attributes of the circumpolar cupboard are being recognized, thus enhancing the appeal of northern destinations. Arctic food tourism is embracing the rich storytelling traditions of circumpolar peoples, both the indigenous people who have always lived with the land and more recent newcomers who have made ‘the North’ their home. The slow and local food movements are also impacting how Arctic foods are presented within tourism. This article examines emerging food tourism trends in the Circumpolar North. The growing importance of food and its relationship to land-based traditions and tourism activities in northern Canada and Sweden is evaluated. How northern foods and food-related traditions are used to position polar tourism in the marketplace is explored through textual analysis. There are unique challenges posed by this complex development environment including challenges encountered in developing tourism in peripheral areas generally, as well as specific food-related matters. Results underline impacts of food tourism trends and highlight how, in the North, consuming food is also about consuming stories.

  • Should we stay, or should we go? The influence of risk perceptions on revisit intentions to cultural heritage during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 17:4, s. 431-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is important to understand consumer behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic because it may support organizations to recover. Risk perceptions are likely to play a role in influencing intentions to visit a cultural heritage destination. The goal of this study is to describe risk perceptions and to examine the influence of these perceptions on the revisit intentions to a cultural heritage location during the COVID-19 era in the Netherlands. In this quantitative study, a sample of 470 respondents is used. Our model was tested using structural equation modeling. The results show that the respondents take COVID-19 seriously and that part of the respondents do not feel comfortable taking domestic trips. Nevertheless, the respondents have faith in the hygiene measures taken by the location they have visited earlier, and they believe a revisit would still be satisfactory. Whilst the model shows a good fit with the data, contrary to expectations, there is no relationship between six risk perceptions and the revisit intention. The study stresses the importance of establishing relationships with existing visitors and building upon their trust.

  • Nostalgia and tourism
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 18:3, s. 307-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For most of the past 300 years, the concept of nostalgia has been regarded as a medical condition. However, since the 1980s, it has become heavily associated with the 'heritage industry' and the creation of consumer experiences, especially in a tourism and leisure context. This special issue on nostalgia and tourism aims to encourage and advance the scholarly conversation about the relationship between nostalgia and contemporary heritage tourism. The collection of articles in this special issue provides theoretical, conceptual and empirical research on nostalgia and heritage tourism in different contexts. Hence, this editorial addresses the historical development of the term 'nostalgia' and examines the key themes in research on nostalgia and heritage tourism.

  • Re-envisioning community-based heritage tourism in the old city of Nazareth
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 11, s. 105-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study specifically examines the potential for heritage tourism development topromote cross-cultural dialog in the historic old city of Nazareth (Israel). The paperfocuses on a case study of a small-scale heritage tourism venture that seeksto influence tourism development in Nazareth’s old city. This is an exploratorycase study that uses qualitative research methods including extensive participantobservation and in-depth interviews with the venture’s senior management group andselected employees. Study findings indicate a model of the relationship betweencommunity-based tourism development, heritage, and peace-building in a city thathas experienced a wide range of cross-cultural conflicts. This model represents analternative view to the notion that heritage serves to enhance differences anddissonance between different cultural groups. In contrast, findings from this studysuggest that heritage in the form of tourism can help create shared interests betweendifferent communities in settings characterized by cross-cultural conflict.

  • Mining for tourists in China: a digital ethnography of user-generated content from coal mining heritage parks
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mine parks and industrial heritage are relatively recent tourism phenomena, emerging in Europe and North America during the mid-twentieth century. In the People’s Republic of China, government officials undertook large-scale promotion of mining heritage between 2005 and 2021, when 88 former state-sector mines were designated national parks. From an official vantage point, transforming former extractive industries into heritage sites helped communities negatively affected by the social and environmental legacies of mining and mine closure to pursue a future in China’s lucrative tourism sector. To date, this endeavour has been little studied, with research on visitors’ experiences particularly limited. In this article, we interrogate Chinese tourists’ responses to national mining heritage by analysing online user-generated content (tourist reviews) from three coal-mines-turned-heritage parks. We ask how visitors made meaning at these sites, and whether and how the mining tourism imaginaries they co-constructed in online reviews resembled visitor experiences of mining heritage elsewhere. How Chinese tourists respond to the parks not only affects the state’s ability to achieve its development goals, but also informs perceptions of mining, energy production, and tourism more broadly. Such perceptions have implications for sustainable resource and energy use.
