  • Resilience among very old men and women
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of research in nursing. - : SAGE Publications. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 5:15, s. 419-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High resilience is characterised by qualities of equanimity, perseverance, self-reliance, meaningfulness and existential aloneness. The aims of the present study were both to explore how the oldest of old men and women with estimated high resilience talk about experiences of becoming and being old, and to discuss the analysis of their narratives in terms of the foundational concepts of the Resilience Scale (RS). Thematic narrative interviews collected from 24 old people were analysed using content analysis, and the following themes were identified: feeling connected, feeling independent and creating meaning. The themes can be seen as congruent with the underlying concepts of the Resilience Scale; however, the themes were markedly gendered. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative research may contribute to a new angle of approach towards our understanding of resilience. In nursing practice it is of importance to both stimulate social contacts in the present and listen to narratives from the past to increase resilience among the oldest patients.

  • Marte meo counselling : a promising tool to support positive interactions between residents with dementia and nurses in nursing homes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - : SAGE Publications. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 16:5, s. 415-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marte Meo Counselling (MMC) is an educational video-based counselling method developed to improve interactions between persons. This study aimed at investigating whether changes could be identified in the interactions between people with dementia and their nurses during morning care, following MMC. An intervention study based on video recordings before and after a MMC intervention was used. Thirteen nurses and 10 residents from six dementia-specific care units at six different institutions in Norway participated. Data were collected through video recording of six pairs (nurse and resident) in interaction before and after the staff received MMC. Four pairs participated as controls. The findings suggest that nurses who received MMC succeeded, to a greater degree than did the comparison nurses, in providing care consistent with promoting positive interactions. We found clearer indications of increased positive interactions and a reduction in inappropriate interactions in the intervention group. In the control group, the variation was greater, with both good and poor interactions present in the same cases. This study indicates that MMC can serve as a facilitator for positive interactions and can also lead to a reduction in inappropriate interactions. Further research is needed to evaluate the effect of MMC.

  • On discharge planning  : dynamic complex processes – uncertainty, surprise and standardisation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 20:1, s. 39-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can discharge planning (DP) for patients who require care in the home following a period in hospital be understood and developed through the lenses of complexity theory? With the help of complexity theory and practice-based narrative research this study discloses the formal routines and complex dynamic practices that are associated with DP. A study of the literature established that there was an almost total absence of complexity-theoretical perspectives on interpreting and developing DP.                 The researchers collected narratives about the DP processes using qualitative interviews with the nurses responsible for this in a hospital ward: these were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. They also participated in and documented meetings where these nurses, as a group, discussed DP.                 The findings show that nurses have to continuously deal with uncertainty, surprises and the unknown. They have to make sense and take charge of dynamic complex events and new knowledge, and manage complex relations and information. The researchers argue that looking upon practice from the lenses of complexity theory, and therefore accepting the complexity of practice, could facilitate the development of nurses' skills in order to guarantee good quality in DP.

  • Nurses’ Patient Education Questionnaire : development and validation process
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - : Sage Publications Ltd.. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 20:3, s. 181-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Conditions for nurses’ daily patient education work are unclear and require clarification. The aim was to develop and validate the Nurses’ Patient Education Questionnaire, a questionnaire that assesses nurses’ perceptions of appropriate conditions for patient education work: what nurses say they actually do and what they think about what they do. The questionnaire was developed from a literature review, resulting in the development of five domains. This was followed by ‘cognitive interviewing’ with 14 nurses and dialogue with 5 pedagogical experts. The five domains were identified as significant for assessing nurses’ beliefs and knowledge; education environment; health care organisation; interdisciplinary cooperation and collegial teamwork; and patient education activities. A content validity index was used for agreement of relevance and consensus of items by nurses (n¼10). The total number of items in the final questionnaire is 60, consisting of demographic items, what nurses report they do and perceptions about patient education in daily work. The questionnaire can be used by managers and nurses to identify possibilities and barriers to patient education in different care contexts.

  • Patients’ experiences of home enteral tube feeding (HETF) : a qualitative study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of research in nursing. - : Sage Publications. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 20:7, s. 552-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Use of home enteral tube feeding (HETF) has increased in Western countries but research is scarce, especially about patients’ experiences of daily life when being treated with HETF. This study aimed to explore what it means to live with HETF and how the situation can be managed. A qualitative method was carried out according to Grounded Theory. In total, 22 interviews were performed with 11 patients treated with HETF for between 8 weeks and 2 years, using open-ended questions. Sampling, data collection and data analysis were carried out simultaneously. To be treated with HETF was experienced as positive as it meant survival, but the most prominent finding told about experiences of restrictions, practical problems and distress in the patients’ daily lives. How daily life turned out seemed to depend on the patient’s ability to manage problems, but was also strongly related to the amount and quality of information and support they received from health professionals. Lacking preparation before discharge as well as lacking support at home meant insecurity and uncertainty. The findings stress the need for comprehensive preparation and support from health professionals, and improvements are needed to facilitate HETF patients’ daily life.

  • Preparing the Air for Nursing Care : A Grounded Theory Study of First Line Nurse Managers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - : Sage Publications Ltd.. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 14:4, s. 351-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first line nurse managers’ opportunities to lead nursing care seem to be diminishing. The aim of this study was, therefore, to gain an understanding of the first line nurse managers in their experiences in the development of nursing care as part of a wider research programme. Finnish nurse managers wrote narratives at the beginning of five different leadership courses in this grounded theory study. ‘Preparing the Air for Nursing Care’ emerged as a core category. It was formed by two major categories. ‘Being Concerned about Nursing Care’ describes the nurse managers’ focus on the development of nursing care, the nursing caregivers’ health and knowledge and a concern for the whole organisation. The second major category ‘Creating the Direction and Content of Nursing Care’ describes the nurse manager working together with the staff to create individual and family-centred best practice, initiating relationships and dialogues for nursing care, and a culture of caring. A typology was created that explained the four main modalities to emerge from the data: ‘the Active Developer’, ‘the Passive Thinker’, ‘the Impulsive Creator’ and ‘the Routine Manager’.

  • The role of first line managers in healthcare organisations : a qualitative study on the work life experience of ward managers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 20:4, s. 280-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of a first line manager (FLM) in Swedish healthcare has gone through major changes, from a divided role involving both nursing work and supervision to a pure management role. Along with these changes, the experienced core work and meaning of work have been altered. This also means that conditions for work that could regenerate the invested resources of the FLMs have been altered as well. The aim of this study was to describe the ward managers’ experiences of their professional role, their work and how they are handling their everyday practice. Furthermore, the aim has been to interpret these experiences through the lens of regenerative work. Five ward managers at a Swedish hospital setting were followed for approximately four years. The study has had an interactive and pragmatic approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations and a continuous dialogue forum (three years). Four themes are presented in this paper: from supervisor to manager; loyalty; talking about it and dialogue forum. These themes are then discussed in order to understand basic conditions for the regenerative work of the FLM. The most central finding is the importance for the FLMs to make sense of their world through narratives and that the organisation does not provide for this.

  • Cyber nursing : a conceptual framework
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Nursing. - : SAGE Publications. - 1744-9871 .- 1744-988X. ; 21:7, s. 505-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been few attempts to express in words and conceptualise ‘the Internet’ and ‘health’ within a framework. The aim of this study was to present a conceptual framework concerning virtual self-care and online caring. The results show that the concepts of virtual communities, virtual self-care and torrenting frame these very specific interactions and environments and that the concepts of ‘keyboard cowboy’ ‘cyber aid’ and ‘health-interests trader’stipulate different ways in which to express expertise in cyber nursing. Alongside cyber bullying, cyber nursing is also present in virtual arenas. Nursing researchers need to explore and monitor cyber nursing activities using concepts developed within the field of nursing.
