  • Governance and implementation of sports safety practices by municipal offices in Swedish communities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. - London : Taylor and Francis: STM, Behavioural Science and Public Health Titles / Taylor and Francis. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 19:2, s. 163-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this study was to explore whether all-purpose health or safety promotion programmes and sports safety policies affect sports safety practices in local communities. Case study research methods were used to compare sports safety activities among offices in 73 Swedish municipalities; 28 with ongoing health or safety promotion programmes and 45 controls. The offices in municipalities with the WHO Healthy Cities (HC) or Safe Communities programmes were more likely to perform frequent inspections of sports facilities, and offices in the WHO HC programme were more likely to involve sports clubs in inspections. More than every second, property management office and environmental protection office conducted sports safety inspections compared with less than one in four planning offices and social welfare offices. It is concluded that all-purpose health and safety promotion programmes can reach out to have an effect on sports safety practices in local communities. These safety practices also reflect administrative work routines and managerial traditions.

  • Injuries sustained during snow removal from roofs resulting in hospital care
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 23:1, s. 105-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clearing snow from roofs causes serious injuries annually. The aim of this study was to describe injury mechanisms, injury panorama, and injury incidence in connection to this activity. A specific aim was to study the association between snow depth and injury incidence. A total of 95 people were injured during four study periods. The risk of injury is strongly associated with snow depth, and the incidence varied up to 10-fold between the studied winter seasons. The majority of injuries (91; 96%) occurred during leisure time and only four people were injured in the occupational setting. The most common injury mechanism was falling off roofs or ladders of residential homes. Nearly 60% sustained moderate or serious injuries (Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale [MAIS] 2-3), and fractures accounted for almost half of all injuries. Because roofs of single-family homes in Sweden usually do not require snow removal for heavy snow loads, these injuries may have been both unnecessary and avoidable. Further education is required to advise the public on the risks associated with snow removal from roofs.

  • Out-of-pocket payments for unintentional injuries : a study in rural Bangladesh.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. - Oxon, UK : Taylor & Francis. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 16:1, s. 41-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the nature and extent of out-of-pocket expenses for unintentional injuries, using the context of rural Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study consisting of 23,113 people was performed through multistage cluster sampling. Chi-square analysis and pie-diagrams were used. A total of 3411 injury victims were identified in this survey. Only 14% of victims received government medical assistance while 17% of victims benefited from public health care and 13% benefited from private health care facilities. However, 94% of the injury victims have purchased drugs out-of-pocket. With a minimum of US $0.07 and maximum of US $140 their mean out-of-pocket payment for drugs was US $4 (half of the Bangladeshis are living under US $1 per day). Instead of relying on public health care facilities most rural Bangladeshi people spent money from their own pockets for treatments. Proper health care distribution with a community-based insurance scheme and safety awareness programmes are warranted to reduce both injury and economic burdens.

  • Injury rates and risk-factors associated with eventing : a total cohort study of injury events among adult Swedish eventing athletes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. - : Taylor and Francis: STM, Behavioural Science and Public Health Titles / Taylor and Francis. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 18:4, s. 261-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to examine injury events and risk-factors among Swedish adult eventing athletes. A cross-sectional study design with retrospective recording of 1-year sports-specific exposure and injury data was used. The invited study population consisted of all members of the Swedish Equestrian Federation with eventing as their primary discipline (n = 513). The participation rate was 70.0%. The total 1-year injury prevalence was 26.6%; the specific 1-year prevalence of traumatic injury was 19.3% and of overuse injury 10.9%. The incidence of traumatic injury events was 0.54 injury events/1000 eventing hours (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.35-0.73 injury events/1000 eventing hours) for novices and 0.35 injury events/1000 eventing hours for qualified riders (95% CI, 0.21-0.49 injury events/1000 eventing hours). A total of 27.9% of the traumatic injury events led to severe injuries (causing more than 3 weeks absence from riding). Attitude to risk-taking was the only factor predicting an athlete becoming injured (p = 0.023), and qualification level was the only risk factor for additional injuries among injured riders (p = 0.003). Our results suggest that injury prevention programs in eventing should also give attention to overuse injuries and that care should be taken when eventing athletes are licensed into higher qualification groups.

  • Is Sweden still a role model for safety? An overview of unintentional injury data over the past two decades
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INJURY CONTROL AND SAFETY PROMOTION. - : Taylor and Francis. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 17:3, s. 195-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates injury-related mortality and hospitalisations, during 1987-2007 in Sweden. Injuries were classified according to International Classification of Diseases (ICD) -8 for pre-1987 injuries, ICD-9 for 1987-1996 injuries and ICD-10 for injuries occurring in 1997 and later. Data on mortality from injuries during 1987-2007 were collected from Swedens national Cause-of-Death Register, while data concerning injury diagnoses leading to hospitalisation stays of at least 24h, occurring during 1987-2007, were obtained from the national Patient Register. Crude rates were derived for injury-related deaths and injury-related hospitalisations for age-gender groups, using population data from Statistics Sweden. Our results showed a mixed picture of injury-related hospitalisations and deaths over the study period. Absolute numbers of injury-related deaths and injury-related hospitalisations decreased over time for the population as a whole and for many, but not all, age-gender groups. When assessing crude injury-related death rates and crude injury-related hospitalisation rates over time, as categorised by gender and age groupings, we also found unchanging or increased risks for injury-related deaths and/or hospitalisations for several age-gender groups. While Sweden has made remarkable progress in reducing injury-related deaths and hospitalisations, there are clear differences in risk that remain.

  • Twenty-five years of bicycle helmet promotion for children in Skaraborg District, Sweden.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7300 .- 1745-7319. ; 19:3, s. 213-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to describe some of the results of a long-term bicycle helmet campaign for children in Skaraborg District, Sweden. The hospital discharge data for bicycle-related injuries occurring in children under the age of 15 were reviewed, to assess changes in patterns for head and other body injuries. The study shows that head injuries to children as a result of bicycle injuries were reduced between 94 and 99% in the study areas. The tremendous gains in safety for children who ride bicycles in Skaraborg District were the result of not only national policy changes that occurred in the latter half of this study period but also the result of local collaborations based on the Safe Communities model, which were organised during the first part of the study period.
