  • Managing digital infrastructures: negotiating control and drift in service provisioning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 30:1, s. 51-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digital infrastructure literature provides important perspectives on the intrinsic relations between information systems in today’s organisations. However, little attention has been paid to the challenges involved in providing requisite digital infrastructure services to organisations. In this paper, we argue digital infrastructure service providers operate in highly complex and uncertain environments. Rather than adopting a traditional approach to control, providers must therefore continuously negotiate a balance between control and drift as two complementary strategies. Our argument is based on a retrospective longitudinal case study of a Swedish infrastructure service team within a large international firm. Using the encounter-episode process model as structuring principle and focusing on the tension between control and drift, we analyse the evolution of the provider’s efforts to manage a portfolio of digital infrastructure services over a period of ten years. Based on these analyses, we uncover the involved complexities and dynamics, how control efforts and drift were constituted and how the infrastructure services were managed by continuously balancing control and drift. In conclusion, we relate the findings to extant literature to discuss new insights into provider management of digital infrastructure services. Copyright © 2019 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Evaluation and comparison of various business process management tools
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 43:3, s. 281-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to introduce, compare and contrast various commonly used business process management (BPM) tools (suites). In the first section, this research reviews the adoption of BPM tools in the industry with some concrete examples and descriptions. The continuous development trend and the benefits of integrating BPM tools into the businesses are presented. The project will then review the academic literature on BPM that would cover BPM’s definition, the development of BPM theories, and the associated tools. Three BPM tools, namely Bizagi BPM Suite, ProcessMaker and Flokzu, analyse specifically will be analysed in this paper, in detail with a real business process as an example. A method adjusted from Vuksic et al.’s (2007) guidelines for selecting discrete event simulation (DES) tools will be used to evaluate and compare the BPM tools. This paper found that among the tools evaluated, Bizagi and Flokzu have a more intuitive user interface and process maker is the least user-friendly tool. Bizagi is recommended for large and middle-sized organisations and Flokzu for smaller organisations.

  • Teaching ERP in logistics curriculum : a case experience from Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 6:3, s. 295-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of ERP systems in business is commonplace and often a requirement for rapid and efficient operations. The presence of ERP in higher education can be seen as a prerequisite for students to achieve necessary skills and knowledge, but how can the education be achieved in a better way? In this research, the use of ERP systems as a part of two courses of the logistics curriculum in higher education at a Swedish University are presented and analysed. The traditional approach of teaching logistics, where computer sessions are incorporated in ordinary courses, is being compared to a new intensive and flexible course format dedicated entirely to ERP education with a stronger focus on problem-oriented learning. The results show that both approaches offer opportunities, the traditional approach allows students to receive both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills, while the intensive approach provides them with significant practical knowledge and skills. This research results leaves us arguing that the best combination is to utilise both approaches to establish the needed basis for curriculum.

  • The value of proprietary and shared information technology
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 1:4, s. 463-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an ongoing debate about the effects of IT investments, and this paper will follow on this debate by discussing the effects of IT investments on productivity as well as the strategic potential of IT. Based on empirical studies on two Swedish value chains, the grocery distribution and the logging industry, this paper discusses the following questions: • Are investments in shared solutions, rather than proprietary solutions, providing the primary contribution to productivity gains? • Are shared solutions contributing to competitive advantage? • Is competitive advantage achieved through the information generated in shared solutions? The results are supported by other empirical studies within the IToP (Impact of IT on Productivity) research programme of Linköping University, Sweden. Copyright © 2006 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • IS development/IT operations alignment in system development projects: a multi-method research
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 11:3, s. 343-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore IS development/IT operations alignment in system development projects. The paper triangulates data from four independent studies in order to explore how the two domains are aligned in today's system development projects. The paper concludes that the two domains are unsatisfactorily aligned: communication and information flow is not efficient, plans and activities are not well-connected, and they do not have a close working relationship. Our findings suggest that improving IS development/IT operations alignment must be a priority for IT managers, and we offer suggestions for focal issues. This study shed light on a new aspect of IT governance and alignment challenges, and provides researchers with data and perspectives for further research.

  • Information Systems Values Scape
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 17:1, s. 49-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses a proposed discrepancy between descriptionsof benefits from information systems (IS) and actions of IS benefits realisation. It suggests that descriptions often are made from an evaluation focusperspective that does not support realisation activities. Using a qualitativesingle case-study the IS benefits realisation efforts of a Swedish hospital isstudied. From the findings, the notion of valuescape as a value configuration issuggested to capture the proposed realisation focus, and thus support realisationactivities.

  • Introducing app stores into a packaged software ecosystem : a negotiated order perspective
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 14:2, s. 223-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study addresses the emerging phenomena of app stores for packaged software such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. Through employing the technology of app stores, ERP and CRM vendors have been reported as shifting from delivering software as a service (SaaS) to platform as a service (PaaS). Through an in-depth case study of one ERP vendor's app store initiative, the study identifies and discusses instances of negotiated order of the ecosystem. The results show that the introduction of an app store for ERP brings with it the threat of restructuring both the incumbent business model and the power relationships nested in the ecosystem, thus spurring intensified instances of negotiated order. This is discussed in terms of different arenas of conflict for negotiated order.

  • Association rule mining for job seekers' profiles based on personality traits and Facebook usage
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 40:3, s. 299-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Personality traits play a significant role in many organisational parameters, such as job satisfaction, performance, employability, and leadership for employers. One of the major social networks, the unemployed derives satisfaction from is Facebook. The focus of this article is to introduce association rule mining and demonstrate how it may be applied by employers to unravel the characteristic profiles of the unemployed Facebook users in the recruitment process by employers, for example, recruitment of public relations officers, marketers, and advertisers. Data for this study comprised 3,000 unemployed Facebook users in Nigeria. This study employs association rule mining for mining hidden but interesting and unusual relationships among unemployed Facebook users. The fundamental finding of this study is that employers of labour can adopt association rule mining to unravel job relevant attributes suitable for specific organisational tasks by examining Facebook activities of potential employees. Other managerial and theoretical implications are discussed.

  • Conceptual Fluidity in the study of Accounting Information Systems: The case of Corporate Performance Management
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972. ; 14:3, s. 280-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to contribute to the field of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) through an illustration and discussion of the conceptual fluidity of one specific technology (Corporate Performance Management, CPM). This is achieved through a synthesizing content analysis of proprietary industry analyst reports from 2002 to 2010. The study finds that CPM displays a high degree of conceptual fluidity, and, based on this, two research strategies informed by the sociomaterial perspective are proposed. The study discusses how an increased understanding of the conceptual fluidity of AIS technologies can be taken into account in future research. The implication of this study is a more informed approach in the study of; and, the design, adoption and diffusion of AIS technologies.
