  • Professional employees’ strategic employment of the managerial logic in healthcare
  • 2018
  • In: Qualitative research in organization and management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1746-5648 .- 1746-5656. ; 13:2, s. 126-143
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how physicians and nurses strategicallyemploy the managerial logic.Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative case study incorporating interviews and observations.Findings – Neither physicians nor nurses were prone to strategically employing the managerial logic. However, when doing so nurses were able to acknowledge the legitimacy of managerial impact on practice, whereas the physicians were not. Consequently, physicians might find other, more subtle, ways tostrategically employ the managerial logic.Originality/value – This paper argues for and makes explicit the applicability of qualitative methods inorder to delineate actors’ strategic use of available and accessible institutional logics, the conditions for suchusage, as well as the multiplicity of actors’ interactions that needs to be taken into account when conductingqualitative data analysis of such occurrences. By the merits of the qualitative research approach utilized inthis study, novel insights concerning the strategic use of the managerial logic in the everyday work ofphysicians and nurses were obtainable. These insights emphasize the necessity of acknowledging situational, organizational and institutional context, incorporating inter-professional power discrepancies and relationsvis-à-vis managers.

  • Gait symmetry methods : Comparison of waveform-based Methods and recommendation for use
  • 2020
  • In: Biomedical Signal Processing and Control. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1746-8094 .- 1746-8108. ; 55
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Gait symmetry has been shown to be a relevant measure for differentiating between normal and pathological gait. Although a number of symmetry methods exist, it is not clear which of these methods should be used as they have been developed using data collected from varying experimental protocols. This paper presents a comparison of state-of-the-art waveform-based symmetry methods and tests them on walking data collected from different environments. Acceleration signals collected from the ankle are used to analyse symmetry methods under different signal circumstances, such as phase shift, waveform shape difference, signal length (i.e. number of gait cycles) and gait initiation phase. The cyclogram based method is invariant to signal phase shifts, signal length and the gait initiation phase. The trend symmetry method is not affected by signal scaling and the gait initiation phase but is affected by signal length depending on the environment. Similar to the trend method, the cross-correlation symmetry method is not responsive to signal scaling and the gait initiation phase. The results of the symbolic method are not influenced by signal scaling, gait initiation and depending on the environment by the signal phase shift. From the results of the performed analysis, we recommend the trend method to gait symmetry assessment. The comparison of waveform-based symmetry methods brings new knowledge that will help in selecting an appropriate method for gait symmetry assessment under different experimental protocols. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. • Hydraulic and hydrological simulations of the sewer system in the Majorna area, Gothenburg
  • 2012
  • In: WIT Transactions on the Built Environment. - 1743-3509 .- 1746-4498. ; 122, s. 73-83
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • As long as cities and urban life have been developed during the centuries, the conveying of wastewater and sewage have been important issues for municipalities and other authorities. The goal of municipalities is to convey, treat and reuse the wastewater in a way that does not harm public health and the environment. In the year 2010, Gothenburg Water utility decided to study and improve the sewer network system of the Majorna region, with a total area of 130 hectares, located in Gothenburg city. Hydraulic and hydrological properties of the sewer system were measured, modelled and simulated. Most of the input data needed for simulation was provided by the Gothenburg Water utility databases and a GIS-based map of Gothenburg sewer systems. The site measurements were taken between October and December 2010 and at two manholes where the measuring devices have been installed. The calibration of the model has shown that although there is a good correlation between the model results and the measured values at one of the measuring nodes at the area, there is a difference in the other one; the reason for which should be studied and investigated in another study. Finally, the tests and comparisons between the sewer system in this area and the standard values have shown that pipe leakages are the most problematic matter of the system and solving this problem will improve the system considerably.

  • The association between early introduction of tiny tastings of solid foods and duration of breastfeeding
  • 2023
  • In: International Breastfeeding Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1746-4358. ; 18:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Conflicting advice and non-evidence-based recommendations have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Since 2011, the National Food Agency in Sweden has informed parents that they can introduce tiny tastings (1 mL of solid food, i.e. other sources of nutrition than breastmilk/formula) to infants from four months of age. It is unknown how national recommendations, which differ from the Word Health Organisation's recommendation, affect breastfeeding. We hypothesised that introduction of tiny tastings of solid foods would shorten the duration of continued breastfeeding.METHODS: This retrospective study utilises data from the longitudinal 'Swedish Pregnancy Planning Study', in which mothers were recruited at antenatal clinics on a national level. The participants completed three questionnaires up to one year after birth (n = 1,251). Linear regression models were used to analyse the association between the introduction of solid foods and the duration of breastfeeding.RESULTS: As hypothesised, introduction of tiny tastings shortened the duration of continued breastfeeding. Half of all infants (48%) were fed with tiny tastings already in the fourth month. The correlation analysis showed that the earlier the infants started with tiny tastings, the earlier they ate larger amounts of solid food. In a multivariate linear regression analysis, five factors were identified as having a negative effect on the duration of breastfeeding: low infant age upon introduction of tiny tastings, low maternal age, low level of maternal education, high maternal BMI and twin birth.CONCLUSIONS: Early introduction of tiny tastings of solid foods shortened the duration of breastfeeding. It is difficult to influence most conditions that affect breastfeeding, for example, the mother's educational level, BMI, age and if she has given birth to twins. In contrast, national guidelines can always be updated. Recommendations from the Swedish authorities should adhere to the WHO's recommendation, which states exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued breastfeeding for at least two years or longer.

  • Study of the transient release of water vapor from a fuel bed of wet biomass in a reciprocating-grate furnace
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of the Energy Institute. - : Elsevier BV. - 1743-9671 .- 1746-0220. ; 92:4, s. 843-854
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The present study investigates how sudden changes in fuel moisture affected the combustion characteristics of the fuel bed in a 4-MW reciprocating-grate furnace. The moisture content of the fuel fed to the furnace was monitored online using a near-infrared spectroscopy device, and the water vapor concentration in the flue gas was measured continuously. To obtain experimental data on fuel-bed conditions, the temperature and gas composition in the bed were measured using a probe. A simplified drying model was developed using the measured gas composition values as inputs. The model was then used to estimate the drying rate and to simulate the extent of the drying zone along the grate. Measurements indicated that a change in the moisture content of the fuel fed to the furnace was detected as a change in water vapor concentration in the flue gas with a delay of about 2 h. The model predicted that a portion of wet fuel would need about 2 h to become dry, in line with the measured time delay of the water vapor concentration change in the flue gas. Overall, there was good alignment between the measured and simulated results, supporting the validity of the model and the assumed mechanisms. © 2018 Energy Institute

  • Social capital and trust for inclusion in school and society
  • 2018
  • In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1746-1979 .- 1746-1987.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article reports on the outcomes for students who experienced a strongly inclusive learning environment as a means for all to succeed. This Swedish lower secondary school dramatically improved its results, and the article reports the outcomes from the students’ perspectives. Social capital, with its emphasis on relationships, was used to structure interviews with students who had since moved on to high schools across Sweden and was also used to analyse the interview data. Two elements of social capital that appeared to be strongly associated with the students’ success – trust and confidence – are discussed in depth. The article concludes with a consideration of the significance of the role of schools in cultivating trust and the risks associated with schools ignoring this obligation.

  • A transactional and action-oriented methodological approach to young people's political socialisation
  • 2020
  • In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. - : Sage Publications. - 1746-1979 .- 1746-1987. ; 15:3, s. 243-257
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The research field of (young people’s) political socialisation faces methodological challenges in (1) handling individual agency and political culture as simultaneous and mutual, (2) handling the relation between continuity and change and (3) observing the process of meaning-making in political socialisation. The aim ofthe article is to theoretically argue, present and analytically demonstrate a methodological approach for the study of young people’s political socialisation in action, in the meaning-making process of being and becoming (a) political (subject). Within the research framework of situational political socialisation, a transactional methodological approach is contributed and analytically demonstrated with an empirical analysis of political norms in action. Political socialisation is handled as an observable communication and meaning-makingpractice, thus implying a subjective, situational, relational, participation and action-oriented approach in order to counteract the risks of treating the rising generation as depoliticised objects for political fostering.

  • The school as a public space for democratic experiences : Formal student participation and its political characteristics
  • 2019
  • In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. - : Sage Publications. - 1746-1979 .- 1746-1987. ; 14:2, s. 149-164
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • School democracy in terms of formal student participation is often expressed through different types of councils. This requires that these forms of political participation function democratically. The article contributes knowledge about the school as a public space and the democratic experiences gained through formal student participation in class and school councils. The article is designed in four steps: (I) the presentation of previous research, (II) the presentation of the pedagogical political participation model used for analysis and discussion, (III) the findings of an empirical case in Sweden, and (IV) theoretical synthetizes using John Dewey’s educational theory. It is argued that the political characteristics of formal student participation are uniform and bound to different types of political participation, such as being informed and heard and a lack of political influence that positions students as political objects for democratic fostering. This raises questions about the consequences of students’ growth of democratic experiences.

  • Operationalizing equity : the complexities of equity in practice
  • 2015
  • In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. - : Sage Publications. - 1746-1979 .- 1746-1987. ; 10:3, s. 266-277
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to offer some reflections on the relationship between meanings of equity at the national level and those working with these questions in local schools. We argue that meanings of equity at the national level are in strong contrast to the range complexity identified in local schools. The article draws from case study research, and the empirical data were gathered in seven schools, ranging from preschools to upper secondary schools. Our focus is on how issues of equity are interpreted and what challenges the schools face in relation to this. Our intention is to gain insights into processes where values of equity are negotiated, renegotiated and reshaped in daily contexts in schools. Our results convey a complex picture with a wide variation in how school staff interpret and work with fundamental values. This variation appears both within and between schools. An analysis of the variations resulted in three overarching themes: values as taken for granted, values as formalized and values as a pedagogical flow. These three themes are not exclusive or limited; instead, they should be seen as intertwined.

  • Safeguarding social justice and equality : Exploring Finnish youths' 'Intergroup Mindsets' as a novel approach in the prevention of radicalization and extremism through education
  • 2023
  • In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1746-1979 .- 1746-1987. ; , s. 174619792211358-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • As part of citizenship education, the prevention of radicalization and extremism through education (PVE-E) is an urgent initiative of global educational policy. According to research, radicalized individuals, despite the ideology held, have mindsets that challenge equality and social justice. In this light, this study examines the intergroup mindsets of Finnish students aged 16–19 in vocational institutions through a mixed methods research survey (n = 383). Three distinct intergroup mindsets were found in a profile analysis. The findings demonstrate that the intergroup mindsets of the students are predominantly egalitarian, open-minded, and inclusive. However, there are also students whose mindsets are anti-egalitarian and pro-dominance, and for whom Finnishness is a marker of borders and social exclusion. If intensified and manipulated, the views of these youth may become radicalized with serious implications for national security and societal cohesion. We argue that in PVE-E, the focus on critical thinking must be complemented with transformative approaches that support the development of mindsets based on social justice and equality.
