  • Parenting and digital games : On children’s game play in US families
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 5:3, s. 318-333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on parenting and children's game play. The study is based on an ethnographic study of 32 American middle-class families and takes a discourse analytic approach. Earlier research has argued that parenting styles are dependent on social class, ethnicity, and gender. The present data reveal considerable diversity in how middle-class parents deal with game play, which is currently one of the most common child and youth leisure activities. This diversity is seen across stances taken within the same interview and across interviews. It is argued that differences in middle-class families' parenting styles are related to their view of the child and their stance on game technology. In addition, talk about parenting reveals parents' construction of good and bad parenting, where they see themselves as belonging to the former category.

  • Children and adolescents as news sources : research brief on voice and agency of minors in Swedish and Estonian journalistic regulative documents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 17:1, s. 87-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research briefly analyses Swedish and Estonian laws, journalistic codes of ethics, and newsroom guidelines that set the foundation for minors (not) being interviewed as news sources. Textual analysis of such documents shows that regardless of minors' right to free expression, minors are mostly addressed only in victims' roles, prioritizing protection over representation. Focus on guardian consent of under 18s is justified as protection, which also helps protect the newsroom from adverse reactions. We argue that the regulative basis of journalism reinforces the exclusion of minors from news coverage and prevents them from participating in public discussions. Therefore, the documents need updating from contemporary childhood sociology perspectives according to which minors are considered a resourceful group and distinguished into several age groups and roles, thus can be empowered to be included in news media.

  • From Vernacularized Commercialism to Kidbait: Toy review videos on YouTube and the problematics of the mash-up genre
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 14:2, s. 237-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children’s entertainment has grown massively on YouTube in recent years, and the channels with the most subscriptions and views host content designed for children. This article investigates the toy review genre as present in YouTube videos targeting children. This topic has been discussed previously, most notably in regard to digital parenting and child infringement scandals. This analysis aims to more deeply understand the forms and functions of toy reviews in the contexts of YouTube’s political economy, branding and commercialization, as well as regulation. We analyzed the narrative strategies of 180 videos across 35 toy review channels in order to gain an emic understanding of reviewing. Besides producing repetitive content characterized as “kidbait,” these channels also employ creative aims and strategies to convince adults of the benefits of watching. Toy reviews are, however, a complex hybrid genre mediating children’s commodities and play culture, and more attention should be dedicated to the ethical principles of their production.

  • Making sense of YouTubers : how Swedish children construct and negotiate the YouTuber Misslisibell as a girl celebrity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 13:1, s. 36-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When children use the Internet, they commonly choose to watch their favorite YouTubers. In this article, we aim to deepen the understanding of how children make sense of YouTubers as a phenomenon, and the role of microcelebrities in children’s everyday life. The study is based on group interviews with 9- and 12-year-old Swedish children, and pays specific attention to how they make sense of the video “♥Pin up tutorial (JFR.SE)♥,” produced by the YouTuber Misslisibell. In the analysis, we explore how the children construct and negotiate Misslisibell as celebrity, celebrity endorser, and young girl. Particularly salient were children’s negotiations around the YouTuber’s celebrity status, children’s normative discussions around Misslisibell’s YouTube practices related to her young age, and children’s various interpretations of the video as advertising, “tips,” and as a space for learning. These multifaceted and sometimes contradictive ways of making sense show the multiplicity of meanings YouTubers have for children.

  • Corporate representations of the child worker : Swedish company websites offering sales opportunities to schoolchildren
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Routledge. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 11:4, s. 451-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study explores how companies specialised in a schoolchild work force represent children’s work and the working child on their official websites. The material is four websites from Swedish companies explicitly offering schoolchildren under 13 opportunities to sell products on commission in order to raise money for school trips. The analysis reveals there is an almost total visual absence of children performing work. Instead focus is placed on joy and on learning skills for the future. Caring adults are highly involved in the work that is described as safe and easy. Any possible negative connotations to exploited child labourers are avoided. These findings contribute to our understanding of how complex and contradictory the image of children is in prosperous societies where children do not have to work for survival, but yet do work.

  • Postfeminist Fatherhood in the Animated Feature Films Chicken Little and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Children and Media. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1748-2798 .- 1748-2801. ; 9:3, s. 294-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on Hannah Hamad's concept of postfeminist masculinity, this article analyzes how the animated films Chicken Little (Disney, 2005) and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Sony, 2009) construct postfeminist fatherhood in opposition to two traditional stereotypes: the emotionally distant authoritarian and the bumbling pal. In contrast to films from the 1980s and 1990s, in which sons struggle to live up to their fathers’ expectations, these films demand a change in paternal attitudes, requiring fathers to adapt to their sons’ needs instead. The article argues that the films offer a didactic message to fathers as well as sons, which suggests that in postfeminist fatherhood older parenting models are no longer viable, and a new culture of fatherhood is needed, which may offer a way of challenging hegemonic masculinity.
