  • Innovation in container shipping organisations: Impact of intra- And inter-organisational connectedness
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 8:2, s. 123-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the impacts of customer involvement, supplier involvement, employee involvement and multi-functional collaboration on the innovativeness of container shipping companies. It also considers the relationship between innovativeness and its impacts on business performance. The results of the structural equation modelling analysis used to explain these relationships indicate that container shipping companies rely on internal resources for business service innovation, while neither customer nor supplier involvement have any influence on their innovativeness. This suggests further analysis is needed concerning stakeholder inputs and innovation types with respect to different business-to-business services considering that it has positive impacts on both the financial and customer service performance of container shipping companies. With reference to these findings, managers might want to consider interdependencies between different stakeholders in collaborative innovation. Involving customers by using sales or marketing professionals as mediums might yield to better results in terms of effective customer involvement.

  • Analysis of information synergy between e-Waybill solutions and intelligent transport system services
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research (WRITR). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 4:2/3, s. 123-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a study on information synergy between an electronic waybill (e-Waybill) and intelligent transportation system (ITS) services. A waybill is an important transport document, and it contains essential information about a consignment. We consider five e-Waybill solutions, which differ in where the e-Waybill information is stored, read, and written. We analyse 20 ITS services, and for each of them, the required input entities that can be provided by an e-Waybill are identified, and the synergy with each of the e-Waybill solutions is determined based on the location of the e-Waybill information. The analysis shows that e-Waybill solutions with storage at the freight-level enable the highest information synergy with ITS services. Our result may support the implementation of practical e-Waybill systems that provide high synergy with ITS services, which may lead to higher utilisation of ITS services and more sustainable transport, e.g., in terms of reduced congestion and emissions

  • The modal shift potential of intermodal line-Trains from a haulier's perspective: Drivers and barriers in the mode choice process
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 5:4, s. 369-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to identify drivers and barriers to the usage of intermodal line-Trains in the hauliers' decision-making process, assuming viable line-Train services exist. In a multiple case study, the operations of four hauliers contracted by two forwarders for the domestic transport of consolidated cargo in Sweden are assessed. The results indicate that hauliers face significant obstacles for outsourcing the long-distance haulage to rail. The main barriers are a vehicle fleet that is not adapted for rail, small transport volumes and congestion on terminal access roads. Hence, in the current industry structure the modal shift potential for consolidated cargo is limited. Alternative business models may be needed to reach transport volumes that allow efficient haulage operations, which in turn may lead to reduced business for road hauliers.

  • Establishing intermodal terminals
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 3:3, s. 285-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the development process of intermodal road-rail freight terminals. Of particular interest are factors affecting the development process and the time needed to establish intermodal road-rail terminals. The results are intended not only to be interesting to researchers, but also of practical use to actors developing intermodal terminals. Based on rational choice theory and two Swedish case studies, Falköping/Skaraborg and Nässjö/Jönköping, factors identified and analysed are: profitability, financiers, political entrepreneur, location, large local shippers, and the traffic authorities. Profitability combined with an enthusiastic and committed political entrepreneur are the most vital factors for the success and pace of the development process.

  • The last mile, inbound logistics, and intermodal high capacity transport -the case of Jula in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 6:1, s. 74-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some of the biggest challenges for intermodal transport competitiveness are the extra handling costs and pre- and post-haulage costs. This paper investigates the use of intermodal high capacity transport (IHCT) for the intermodal transport chain in general and to pre-and post-haulage in particular. The aim is not only to measure the cost reductions from using larger vehicles but to understand how better management of inbound flows through increased integration of logistics processes can increase the efficiency of the last mile. The paper analyses the haulage of two 40-foot containers simultaneously when part of an intermodal transport chain. Data were collected from a demonstration project in Sweden, where permission was obtained to use longer vehicles on an approved route to and from the nearest intermodal terminal. Results indicate substantial cost savings from using longer vehicles for pre- and post-haulage. In addition, the business model whereby the shipper purchased their own chassis and permission was obtained to access the terminal after hours for collecting pre-loaded chassis brought additional cost and planning benefits. The total cost saving was significant and potentially eliminates the cost deficit associated with the last mile.

  • The role of contracts in achieving effective governance of intermodal terminals
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 5:1, s. 18-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public sector actors often provide financial or planning support to intermodal terminal developments with the aim of achieving societal benefits through modal shift from road haulage to rail transport. Once operational, such terminals exhibit a variety of governance models with varying levels of power and responsibility shared between public and private actors. This paper reviews a selection of contracts between rail infrastructure owners, terminal owners, terminal operators and rail operators in order to determine the incentives, commitments and risks involved in specifying such responsibilities between actors. The two markets analysed are Sweden and the UK, with similar histories of liberalisation of rail operations. In the Swedish context, terminal infrastructure owners, usually public actors, want to act as landlords but continuously find themselves involved in daily operational and commercial situations. In the UK, long leases on token rents mean that few commitments or investments are required by private operators as long as they remain in use and allow open access. Policy implications are discussed and recommendations made for future research.

  • Where to open maritime containers?: A decision model at the interface of maritime and urban logistics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 10:1, s. 6-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After an era of developing large-scale hinterland access for maritime containers by use of rail and inland waterways, research interest and practice has witnessed a slight shift towards port-centric logistics. The big question is where to open import containers and close and seal the ones for export goods. Is it better done in the port vicinity or should the maritime containers also be used for transport to and from the hinterland? In other words, where is the stuffing and stripping operations best located? Focusing on the import of goods loaded in maritime containers, this article provides a model for assessing the options of locating Distribution Centres (DCs) in the vicinity of the port or in the hinterland, or using a combination of the two. The model is illustrated by a case study of import through the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, comparing a port-centric DC with a location in Falköping, 130 kms inland. Unless more than 85% of the shipments out of DCs are bound for Gothenburg and its vicinity, the assessment favours stripping the maritime containers in the DC in Falköping.

  • Drivers and barriers of reshoring in the Swedish manufacturing industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research (WRITR). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 7:3, s. 195-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to explore reshoring drivers and barriers in the Swedish manufacturing industry. The research is based on case research including five case companies from the Swedish manufacturing industry with experience of manufacturing reshoring. The empirical findings are compared to the existing literature to identify any potential gaps between the existing literature and the Swedish manufacturing context. The findings suggest that quality related issues, an increased degree of automation, and improved cost performance at the home base are the strongest reshoring drivers for Swedish manufacturing companies. The identified drivers and barriers are transferable and have the potential to be building blocks for researchers and practitioners to better understand the reshoring phenomena. The findings also show that further research should focus on reshoring drivers and barriers in relation to specific reshoring characteristics (e.g., ownership, scale of production being reshored, and position in the supply chain).

  • Exploring opportunities for moral disengagement in codes of conduct from the textile industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research (WRITR). - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 7:4, s. 371-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research is to assess how codes of conducts are outlined and formulated in relation to moral disengagement along the supply chain. The research is focused on the idea that supply chain structure may reduce the actors' sense of moral responsibility for the actions and impacts of the supply chain on workers and environment. The research has been conducted as a case study including Swedish firms in the textile industry. The research has used secondary data from codes of conducts. The findings show that codes of conduct do not cover all supply chain practices linked with moral disengagement. This does not cause immoral behaviour as such, but might cause moral disengagement. Supply chain research needs to focus on what should be included in codes of conduct and other ethical guidelines, so as to reduce the risk of immoral behaviour. In order to reduce the likelihood for moral disengagement, there are several supply chain practices that should be included in codes of conduct, such as power asymmetry, managerial support, and incentives.
