  • Gender and age inequalities in television and news production culture in Poland : Ethnography in a public broadcasting company
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies in Television. - : SAGE Publications. - 1749-6020 .- 1749-6039. ; 15:1, s. 49-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies that looked at the quality of media cultures that emerged in the process of democratisation in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have largely missed the role these cultures play in maintaining gender and age inequalities in the media. This ethnography fills this gap. Through the example of one public service broadcaster, Telewizja Polska (TVP), the quality of the post-communist media culture is examined. The article argues that television work in Poland is carried out under the combined pressure from political actors, economic forces and patriarchal ideology, resulting in a weak media autonomy that characterises the CEE region overall. The theoretical framework of field theory is used to demonstrate this link.

  • Live reality television : Care structures within the production and reception of talent shows
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies in Television. - : Sage Publications. - 1749-6020 .- 1749-6039. ; 14:1, s. 7-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on production and reception practices for live reality television using critical theory and empirical research to question how producers and audiences co- create and limit live experiences. The concept of care structures is used to make visi- ble hidden labour in the creation of mood, in particular audiences as participants in the management of live experiences. In the case of Got to Dance, there was a play off between the value and meaning of the live events as a temporary experience captured by ratings and social media, and the more enduring collective-social experience of this reality series over time.

  • Government public relations, audiovisual communication and the informalisation of Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies in Television. - : SAGE Publications. - 1749-6020.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the role of television as a ‘new media’ in government public relations. Drawing on sociological theories on informalisation, this study analyses three features of the Swedish public information programme Anslagstavlan during the 1970s and 1980s: first, formal techniques such as editing, pacing and use of animations; second, narrative strategies including the utilisation of celebrity advertising and intertextuality; and last, the rhetoric of public information. The study shows that the engineering of informality was a key communication strategy for government agencies and that televised information contributed to the conversationalisation and personalisation of government agencies’ communication in medium-specific ways.

  • Screening Greenland in Borgen: Power & Glory : The on- and off-screen contestedness of Arctic landscapes and locations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies in Television. - 1749-6020.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article shows how the Arctic landscapes in the Danish political drama series Borgen: Power & Glory demonstrate Greenland as a contested land in distinct ways: culturally due to the postcolonial tension between Denmark and Greenland; politically due to the conflicted interests from Denmark and other nations for the country’s natural resources; environmentally due to the looming transformation of the Arctic landscapes due to global warming, and commercially due to increasing interest in screen production from Greenlandic tourism actors. Furthermore, we contribute to the location study method approach by focusing on location management and the contestedness of the industry itself.
