  • Incubator performance : An efficiency frontier analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0252 .- 1751-0260. ; 2:4, s. 354-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Assessments and evaluations of incubators has been a topic of discussion for as long as incubators have been in existence due to the fact that there has not been an agreement on how to determine good performance. This paper demonstrates the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) when studying performance of incubators. More specifically, it does so within the four dimensions of cooperation with universities, business networks, external funding and competence development on a sample of 16 Swedish incubators. We show that DEA enables us to measure non-numerical dimensions, and to simultaneously take into account the efforts made by both the incubator and the outcomes. Moreover, DEA provides benchmarks and, based on a model that divides the incubators into four different groups, illustrates the difference between the benchmark and the incubators' current situation.

  • Attention as a means to develop innovation capabilities
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0260 .- 1751-0252. ; 22:3, s. 342-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we explore how an innovation jam – an information technology (IT)-based tool to generate new ideas from employees in response to a call for ideas on a predefined theme – was used in two Swedish industrial firms, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group. Based on two qualitative retrospective case studies, we explore the notion of attention, and highlight the inherent ability of an innovation jam to promote attention. We discuss how attention can be used strategically to support the development of firm capabilities for innovation but point also to the risks involved. The paper contributes to emerging research on how firms develop the capabilities for innovation and highlights how attention can be used strategically.

  • Capabilities for innovation in small firms - A study of 131 high-tech firms and their relation to performance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0260 .- 1751-0252. ; 6:2, s. 149-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organisational capabilities have been widely discussed - most often at a conceptual level and from a large firm perspective. This paper examines the operationalisation and measurement of the capabilities for innovation in small firms and also how capabilities may be related to the firm's innovation performance. Based on a quantitative analysis of 131 small high-tech firms, this paper describes and analyses the dimensions critical for innovation with a special focus on very small high-tech firms. We propose a construct for investigation including five dimensions relating to small firm capabilities and their relation to innovation performance. We found 20 relationships between the capabilities dimensions and innovation performance, of which the performance dimension of 'patent' showed to be particularly correlated to capabilities. Our statistical analysis shows that two latent constructs have a positive effect on innovation performance: cooperation with universities and business planning and advice.

  • Tactical capabilities in agile NPD projects : insights from an autonomous car project in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - Geneva : InderScience Publishers. - 1751-0252 .- 1751-0260. ; 33:2, s. 236-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on project management and new product development (NPD) identifies both strategy and tactics as important for success. Whilst there is a lot of attention on strategy, few studies address the role of tactics in NPD projects. In the pursuit for increasing organisational abilities to manage uncertainty, agile is increasingly getting traction in large firms. Both tactical activities and agile methodology deal with adapting to emergent challenges and handling uncertainty in projects. This motivated this study of how an agile transformation initiative influences tactical activities within NPD projects. The paper is based on a longitudinal case study of Volvo Car Group's autonomous car project. The case firm's transformation from waterfall to agile method provided the possibility to understand how tactical activities differ between the two methods. By using observations from the case, we argue that agile development method facilitates the use of tactics in NPD projects. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. All rights reserved.

  • Open Innovation in Practice: Diffusion of Knowledge and Use in Swedish Bio-Pharmaceutical Firms
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0252. ; 8:2, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of open innovation has successfully diffused among academicians and policy makers, framing innovation work in the post-bureaucratic era. Much of its initial theorising is built on single case studies of early adopters, but there is still a lack of quantitative studies in specific industries and geographical contingencies. In this paper, we report the results of a survey on open innovation (N = 114 firms), targeting the Swedish bio-pharmaceutical industry. The purpose is to shed light on how widespread the knowledge and practical utilisation of open innovation activities actually are in a particular industry. We find that very few respondents were aware of the open innovation concept, and also that open innovation related activities are, to a large extent, integrated within the ordinary innovation practices. At the same time, the application of open innovation activities relates to whether the firm has an innovation strategy,

  • Serological patterns of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus suis in pig herds affected by pleuritis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1751-0147. ; 58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Respiratory illness is traditionally regarded as the disease of the growing pig, and has historically mainly been associated to bacterial infections with focus on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. These bacteria still are of great importance, but continuously increasing herd sizes have complicated the scenario and the influence of secondary invaders may have been increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of A. pleuropneumoniae and M. hyopneumoniae, as well as that of the secondary invaders Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus suis by serology in four pig herds (A-D) using age segregated rearing systems with high incidences of pleuritic lesions at slaughter. Results: Pleuritic lesions registered at slaughter ranged from 20.5 to 33.1 % in the four herds. In herd A, the levels of serum antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae exceeded A(450) > 1.5, but not to any other microbe searched for. The seroconversion took place early during the fattening period. Similar levels of serum antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae were also recorded in herd B, with a subsequent increase in levels of antibodies to P. multocida. Pigs seroconverted to both agents during the early phase of the fattening period. In herd C, pigs seroconverted to P. multocida during the early phase of the fattening period and thereafter to A. pleuropneumoniae. In herd D, the levels of antibodies to P. multocida exceeded A(450) > 1.0 in absence (A(450) < 0.5) of antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae. The levels of serum antibodies to M. hyopneumoniae and to S. suis remained below A(450) < 1.0 in all four herds. Pigs seroconverted to M. hyopneumoniae late during the rearing period (herd B-D), or not at all (herd A).Conclusion: Different serological patterns were found in the four herds with high levels of serum antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida, either alone or in combination with each other. Seroconversion to M. hyopneumoniae late during the rearing period or not at all, confirmed the positive effect of age segregated rearing in preventing or delaying infections with M. hyopneumoniae. The results obtained highlight the necessity of diagnostic investigations to define the true disease pattern in herds with a high incidence of pleuritic lesions.
