  • Avenues of entry: how industrial engineers and ergonomists access and influence human factors and ergonomics issues
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Industrial Engineering. - 1751-5262 .- 1751-5254. ; 8:3, s. 325-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study compares how Canadian industrial engineers (IEs) and ergonomists ‘position themselves’ to influence human factors and ergonomics (HFE) issues. The study examined how these stakeholders perceived their influence on HFE issues, constraints they operated under, and strategies used. The results contribute to an understanding of decisions and processes surrounding HFE practices, showing that organisational entry points and stakeholder expectations on IEs and ergonomists affect their influence on HFE issues. Ergonomists influenced HFE issues by leveraging their knowledge of other stakeholders’ priorities, and were more dependent on accessing the issue via a ‘problem owner’. IEs were often entrusted with greater freedom to act on improvements. Expressing HFE improvements in terms of business benefits was a successful strategy for both. It was found that ergonomists operated as ‘partial solution builders’, trying to influence the HFE issue as an expert, lobbyist or facilitator. Based on the results, an existing framework was modified.

  • Demand signal modelling: A short-range panel forecasting algorithm for semiconductor firm device-level demand
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Industrial Engineering. - 1751-5254 .- 1751-5262. ; 2:3, s. 253-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A model-based approach to the forecasting of short-range product demand within the semiconductor industry is presented. Device-level forecast models are developed via a novel two-stage stochastic algorithm that permits leading indicators to be optimally blended with smoothed estimates of unit-level demand. Leading indicators include backlog, bookings, delinquencies, inventory positions, and distributor resales. Group level forecasts are easily obtained through upwards aggregation of the device level forecasts. The forecasting algorithm is demonstrated at two major US-based semiconductor manufacturers. The first application involves a product family consisting of 254 individual devices with a 26-month training dataset and eight-month ex situ validation dataset. A subsequent demonstration refines the approach, and is demonstrated across a panel of six high volume devices with a 29-month training dataset and a 13-month ex situ validation dataset. In both implementations, significant improvement is realised versus legacy forecasting systems

  • The impacts of logistics service integrators overconfidence behaviour on supply chain decision under demand surge
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Industrial Engineering. - : INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD. - 1751-5254 .- 1751-5262. ; 12:4, s. 558-597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies a two-echelon logistics service supply chain (LSSC) composed of one logistics service integrator (LSI) and one functional logistics service provider (FLSP). We develop a two-period service capacity procurement model where market demand surges in the second period. The LSI, as the Stackelberg game leader, tends to be overconfident when market demand surges. The results show that when the demand surges in the second period, if the overconfident purchasing capacity of LSI cannot meet the market demand, the overconfidence behaviour will negatively affect LSI s optimal pricing. Besides, the overconfidence behaviour leads to the lowest service level of the FLSP in the second period under demand surge. However, such negative impacts can be reduced or even eliminated in certain conditions through the FLSP-led mechanism and the dynamic wholesale price mechanism. The numerical simulation and the case study from China are used to illustrate the model and draw some conclusions.

  • Scheduling optimization of a real flexible job shop including fixture availability and preventive maintenance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Industrial Engineering. - 1751-5254 .- 1751-5262. ; 9:1, s. 126-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multitask cell at GKN Aerospace Sweden is a flexible job shop containing ten resources aimed at being flexible with regard to product mix and processing types. We present a time-indexed formulation of the problem of optimally scheduling the planned jobs on the resources, also considering a limited availability of fixtures as well as required preventive maintenance activities. The objective is to minimize a weighted sum of the completion times and tardiness for the jobs, where the tardiness weight for a given job is a non-increasing function of its due date. We propose a fast iterative approach to finding a suitable value of the length of the time horizon that needs to be set for the time-indexed formulation and which considerably influences the computation time. Computational results show that the method developed is able to produce optimal, or near-optimal, schedules for real data instances within an acceptable practical time frame.
