  • Organizational Innovativeness of International New Ventures: Evidence from Swedish Firms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 13:4, s. 479-495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper scrutinizes how and for what purposeinternational new ventures (INVs), of various formation types and at different developmentstages, innovate organizational structures and routines in comparison to otherinternationally active firms in Sweden. We show that INVs place more emphasison reorganizing their external relationships and primarily aim theirreorganization efforts at furthering their ability to enhance innovativeoutput. Coupled with the fact that INV report higher rate of new-to-marketinnovations than other internationalized firms, we conclude that INVs retaintheir innovative focus over time and, irrespective of their formation type, continuously advance their networking capabilities. We propose that dynamicinnovation-advancing relational capability as a characteristic that is uniqueto the INVs as a group of firms.

  • The new distributed digital technology world trade and MNEs: another step in the inventive process
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1751-6757. ; 15:1, s. 135-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Major innovations are about reducing transactions costs. This has been true since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and it continues along the inventive process in the last 220 years. The innovative technology of blockchains and cryptocurrencies with smart contracts (distributed digital technology) has a potential for substantial reduction of transactions costs that are rooted in human nature. Like earlier transformational innovative technologies, such as the steam locomotive and the internet, the new distributed digital technology may create disruptions in the market today, but if successful it will increase welfare by transforming the way that people transact in the market in the future. The major feature of the new digital technology is that it makes it possible for individuals to match their supply and demand without intervention of organisations like firms, financial intermediaries and regulating agencies. The new digital technology gets us closer to the neoclassical perfect market model. Distributed digital technology progresses in a step-by-step fashion. The first step was the Bitcoin: electronic peer-to-peer cash transfers without the need for central regulations. A number of services, particularly those that can be traded digitally, are next in line. Two potential applications of distributed digital applications are global trade in services and to MNEs.

  • Combining collaboration and competition : a key to improved idea management?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 8:5, s. 528-547
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earlier research in the field of idea management has highlighted both collaboration and competition driving ideation. While these two are normally considered opposing and excluding, recent work proposes them to be complements. Previous studies have primarily focused on firm-external communities, and little is known about the joint use of collaboration and competition inside firms. This paper addresses collaborative and competitive mechanisms used in firm-internal idea management. Case studies of three multinational firms active in idea management have been performed. The firms' use of collaboration and competition in firm-internal idea management is analysed, revealing that the two approaches can be combined, and explores how their paradoxical coexistence can be managed. This study underlines the importance of addressing intrinsic motivation and facilitating sharing of knowledge in order to bridge and align collaboration and competition mechanisms. It also highlights issues of rewards and company culture, requiring informed attention from human resources management.

  • Chinese outward foreign direct investments in Europe
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 10:3, s. 343-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses Chinese outward foreign direct investments (OFDI) in Europe. We aim to provide more knowledge on the ongoing research discussion about Chinese OFDI, more specifically, we answer questions about what is driving Chinese firms to invest in Europe, and whether Chinese investment behaviour in Europe differs compared with their investments in other parts of the world. For our empirical study we use data from the 2012 statistical bulletin of Chinese OFDI, 20032012. Our results indicate that European countries generally receive lower levels of investment from Chinese firms compared with other regions of the world. We find, furthermore, that the main motives for Chinese investment in Europe are market seeking and strategic asset seeking, and that there are large differences among European countries in attracting Chinese investments.

  • Strategic implications of European economic integration : The relative importance of barrier categories
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 5:3, s. 235-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investigating strategic implications of economic integration for firms, this paper presents and discusses a framework for assessment of barriers to intra-community competition. The case is the European internal market, from the perspective of Swedish SMEs. The dismantling of certain barriers as well as remaining barriers to intra-community transactions is acknowledged. Both circumstances influence competitive advantages on the domestic market and the need for resources and experience abroad. Opportunities and threats are related to the initial exposure to barriers of different categories: whether barriers build on political measures, market behaviour, culture or nature. Data from Swedish SMEs, including perceived distance to other markets, underline limitations in policymaking's reach as well as the importance of geographic and lingua-cultural distance.

  • Family business research in the European context
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 9:2, s. 139-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Family businesses are the most ubiquitous form of business organisation in Europe. Yet, most of the existing family business literature has been developed within a North American context. This introductory article builds on existing family business research conducted in the European context to portray Europe as a critically important context for extending our knowledge on important family business topics. It also counts on the view of the Secretary General of European Family Businesses to enhance our understanding of the institutional frameworks that can benefit family businesses in the EU zone. Specifically, the content of the article discusses some contextual factors that might affect the broadness, diversity, uniqueness and growth potential of family business research; identifies some of the interesting research questions that emerge from examining the distinctive traits of the European context; and stimulates further family business work in the European context and comparison with studies conducted in different geographies.

  • Cross-border entrepreneurship in a global world : a critical reconceptualisation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 11:3, s. 262-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article shows that international entrepreneurship and immigrant entrepreneurship increasingly intersect in a global world. Both research streams address cross-border entrepreneurial activity in parallel to each other. International entrepreneurship focuses on outgoing entrepreneurial activity, while immigrant entrepreneurship mainly considers incoming entrepreneurial activity. The article critically discusses such a dichotomy, highlighting how differentiating immigrant entrepreneurs and international entrepreneurs perpetuates orientalist assumptions about cross-border business activity. Focusing on entrepreneurship as a behaviour, the article proposes an alternative perspective to cross-border entrepreneurship, discussing cross-border opportunity identification and exploitation between an entrepreneur’s country of residence and a foreign country. This perspective provides a number of avenues for further research open for scholars in the field of entrepreneurship to investigate either alone or in collaboration with other disciplines.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purposes of this special issue were to connect Human Resource Management (HRM) research and innovation research and to contribute towards a better understanding of how HRM can be deployed to support organisations in their innovation efforts. In this commentary, we review the results from the five articles in this special issue in general and offer suggestions for future research from these five contributions. We do this by pinpointing a number of themes, contingencies, measurement challenges and ideas on working with other research areas that might be useful in future research on the relationship between HRM and innovation.

  • Innovation against the odds: how micro-political behaviours help bottom-up initiatives thrive
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765. ; 1:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores how bottom-up managers navigate the complex internal politics of organisations in order to ensure their innovative ideas are approved and implemented. It focuses on bottom-up initiatives and the behaviours of these managers seeking approval and recognition for these ideas. A qualitative case study of a European automotive manufacturer is used to capture an ongoing industrial transformation into the digital domain which calls for new ways of innovating products, methods and services. Even when confronted with hurdles in procuring resources for high-dissonance initiatives, bottom-up managers deploy micropolitical strategies to ensure their success. The findings not only offer a novel explanation for the success of bottom-up initiatives but also enrich our understanding of innovation dynamics within multinational companies. This research holds valuable insights for organizations aiming to foster a culture that champions innovation, underscoring the indispensable role of micropolitics in innovation management.

  • Openness towards language differences and cultural differences in multicultural teams: How do they interact?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of International Management. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1751-6757 .- 1751-6765.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we address how different types of positive attitude towards international diversity among team members can influence team outcomes. Our study explores whether openness to language diversity could contribute to the effect of openness to value diversity becoming more salient. Data was collected from 1085 team leaders of highly globalised academic research teams in the Nordic region. The results show a significant and positive effect of openness to different cultural values on team outcomes. Furthermore, in teams rated more open to language diversity, the impact of openness to value diversity on team performance is enhanced. Effects of different types of diversity attitude have been assessed in extant literature. No prior studies, however, have focused on the interaction between the different types of diversity attitude. This is an important omission because one type of diversity attitude could function as a boundary condition for other types of diversity attitude.
