  • Adolescents with endometriosis : Their experience of the school health care system in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - London, United Kingdom : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 8:2, s. 81-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate what type and level of support women diagnosed with endometriosis received in Sweden from the school medical network and school nurses during their secondary and upper secondary school years and how it affected their quality of life.A quantitative method with an inductive approach was used to collect data for the study.Young women were found to be absent from school or missing extra-curricular activities due to pain and abnormal bleeding associated with their menstrual cycles. Some of the women thought that these symptoms were normal and did not consult the school nurse as a result of their limited experience. Others did not consult with the nurses because of a perception of poor treatment.Endometriosis can be managed and adequate treatment can have a substantial impact on improving quality of life. It is important that school nurses are aware of the condition and that young women understand what constitutes a normal menstrual cycle and when they should seek help from health professionals.

  • Can school attachment modify the relation between foster care placement and school achievement?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 13:4, s. 175-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this research is to examine the relation between school attachment and school achievement and foster care placement.A cross-sectional study was carried out with data from 20 340 pupils in Sweden, aged 10, 13 and 16 years, 252 of the children were placed in foster care.Data on children's health, school attachment and school achievement were obtained from the Pupil Health Database. The results show that school achievement was significantly poorer for children in foster care than for other children, but only when they had low school attachment. When they had high school attachment, there was no difference in school achievement between the groups. Therefore, the results of this study suggests that school attachment could modify the relation between foster care placement and school achievement. The interaction effect was statistically significant after adjusting for age and sex. By promoting school attachment for children in foster care through creating supportive relations and a friendly school environment, the school achievement can be improved.

  • Supporting positive mental health development in adolescents with a group cognitive intervention
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 9:1, s. 24-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Supporting positive mental health development in adolescents is an important school health concern, but there is a need to investigate the suitability of the interventions used. Aim: The aim is to investigate the experiences of school health professionals in conducting a universal school-based programme aimed at preventing depressive symptoms in adolescents. Methods: Twenty-two school health professionals participated in four focus groups. The interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Findings: The overall theme identified in the study consists of‘striking a balance between strictly following the manual and meeting the students’ needs’. Three subthemes emerged: ‘doing good and sowing seeds for the future’, working with insufficient tools, and ‘personal development as a professional and as an individual’. Conclusions: School health professionals conducting the programme found it valuable in a school setting, but considered support from the school administration essential.

  • Pupils' perspectives on preventive health dialogues
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 5:1, s. 26-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to understand pupils’ perspectives on health dialogues with school nurses. Background: A preventive health dialogue with a school nurse is offered to pupils in grades 4 and 7 in compulsory school and during their first year of upper secondary school in Sweden. The dialogue has been developed by school nurses as a method in health prevention work, but knowledge of how it is experienced from the pupil’s perspective is scant. Method: A total of 15 focus group interviews comprising 74 pupils altogether were performed. The data was subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: The results emerged in four categories: Preparation creates preparedness and Adaptability creates dialogues based on wishes and needs, which were seen as prerequisites for a satisfactory health dialogue; the health dialogue benefits were Providing opportunity for knowledge and insight about health and lifestyle and Providing opportunity to develop a trustful relationship with the school nurse, which could result in a satisfactory outcome of a health dialogue. Conclusions: These results highlight that it is essential to create a respectful and open atmosphere in the encounter between pupil and school nurse. The pupil can gain insight into his or her health situation and get advice based on his or her individual needs if the nurse can adapt to the pupil’s wishes and needs through the dialogue.

  • School nurses' health dialogues with pupils about physical activity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Limited. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 10:7, s. 330-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to explore school nurses' health dialogues with pupils regarding physical activity. A descriptive explorative qualitative design based on video recordings of 15 nurses performing 24 ordinary real-life health visits with pupils aged 10,14 and 16 years was used to accomplish this. Audio files from the video recordings were transcribed verbatim and subjected to qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the school nurses created a flow and kept the conversation going to enable the progress of the health dialogue about physical activity. To gain the pupils' trust, the nurses used social talk and gave positive feedback. By assessing information about the pupils' activity the nurses created an overview and then, based on this overview, tried to create a potential for change in physical activity.

  • ‘I had a lump in my stomach’ : Swedish gay and lesbian students’ experiences of their time in school
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 12:6, s. 284-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gay and lesbian youth can experience ignorance and a lack of acknowledgement surrounding their sexual orientation during their time in school. This qualitative interview study describes how Swedish gay and lesbian students experience their secondary school years on the basis that society has heteronormative values. The data is based on eight telephone interviews with gay and lesbian young adults, aged 18–25 and was analysed using a qualitative narrative approach. The findings presented four themes: not fitting into the norm of heterosexuality, lacking confirmation of their own homosexuality, finding courage, seeing the school as a supportive or a non-supportive environment.A way to normalise homosexuality can be to discuss sexual development and attraction from a health-promoting perspective. Professionals working in school need to feel comfortable with issues such as sexuality in order to create a situation of confidence for the student.

  • Meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 10:4, s. 182-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mental ill-health is an increasing problem in Swedish society. If a parent is suffering from mental illness, it can have negative consequences for the child’s wellbeing, health and developmental process. The challenge for school nurses is to identify and support these students. The aim of this study is to describe school nurses’ experiences from meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health. Interviews with six school nurses were performed after snowball recruitment with purposive sampling and analysed using qualitative content analysis. School nurses’ experience of meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health shows that this is complex and demands competence and collaboration. Their competences in collaboration with others as well as their ability to show an open and tolerant attitude were important in order to build trustful relations with students, their parents and other professionals.

  • Assessing the validity and reliability of the "Health Dialogue" in 10-year-olds
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 8:8, s. 384-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim:The aim was to assess the concurrent, construct and convergent validity of the Health Dialogue questionnaire (HD) in 4th grade in compulsory school, through comparison of the HD questionnaire with Pediatric Quality Of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC).Methods:A sample was created from the HD n=1956, HBSC, n=1500 and PedsQL n=425. An exploratory factor analysis was performed in order to evaluate the construct validity of HD.Results:A majority of the questions show acceptable concurrent validity and the results support the HD as a valid 16-item three factorial model for school children aged 10 years old (grade 4). The HD's three factorial model's degree of explanation was 39% of the school children's health in school settings. Conclusion:The HD questionnaire is a valid instrument for measuring 10-year-old school children's self-reported-health and to identify positive health factors.

  • Exploring the development of school children's health
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - London : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 7:4, s. 189-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To explore the association between positive self-reported health (SRH) in pre-school and 4th grade SRH in a long–term prospective population-based study in Sweden. Methods: Data originated from the Health Dialogue (HD) a structured instrument used by school nurses. 1084 children participated. Odds ratios were analyzed. Results: In 10-year-old children’s SRH, comfort in school, normal BMI and absence of headaches were shown to be significantly important health indicators. Normal BMI showed to have a potentially causal effect on 10-year-old girls and absence of headaches showed a potentially causal effect among 10-year-old boys. Conclusion: Schools should be designed to meet the children’s needs so that they are perceived as comfortable, safe and secure places. Schools should advocate physical activity and play, serve healthy nutritious food in order to motivate, support and promote a healthy lifestyle. Schools are a unique arena for health promotion as they reach practically all school-age children.
