  • Renewing industry cluster development via interregional industry-university links
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 3:6, s. 604-631
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of developing regional industry clusters has grown alongside the need for industries and universities to be more interlinked. A regional automotive testing industry cluster, located in the north of Sweden, is the innovative empirical setting for this research paper. Following the logic of induction, it is discovered that as the regional industry reached a certain maturity, renewal was sought via developing links to universities within other regions in Sweden. A conceptual sensemaking lens is used to theorise upon the links thus formed and to develop new insights into regional industry renewal processes and interregional industry-university links. Practical insights stemming from the case are also explained, and future research directions provided.

  • Living lab : an open and citizen-centric approach for innovation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 1:4, s. 356-370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we focus on a new research area, Living Lab that introduces new ways of managing innovation processes. A Living Lab can be viewed as both an innovation milieu and an innovation approach and the aim of this paper is to clarify these two perspectives, as well as to illustrate how they can enrich each other. This is done by presenting one Living Lab milieu, Botnia Living Lab and its key components; and one Living Lab approach, FormIT and its key principles. The presentation is done on two levels, one general level and one case specific level. The case focuses on involving citizens in the design of an e-service aimed to increase their influence in a municipality and its development. Through this, we learnt that the key components of a Living Lab constitutes important structures that enhance the process and as such the principles.

  • Innovation focusing on regional development in a European context : towards a new research agenda
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 7:1, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: This article presents a review of recent research in order to discuss a new research agenda on the role of innovation, with focus on its relevance for regional development in a European context. The research question addressed is: what are the theories in recent literature on innovation in the perspective of regional development in order to develop policy-oriented conclusions? The analysis is based on a literature review of 15 articles published in 2012-2013 and is a further literature review analysis from 2011 and 2012. Results are indicating that there is an increasing role for regional policymakers e.g. that policymakers must both recognize and develop policies for forms of knowledge that have not traditionally been considered central to their activities, and an increasing role due to existing multi-level governance. Furthermore; the learning region concept needs to be developed; a broader view and development of a heterodox approach to innovation including not only technological but also other types such as social and public innovation and the importance of networks and social capital for regional innovation are stressed.

  • Turning ideas into innovations : introducing demand-driven collaborative ideation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 5:4/5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Web-enabled tools for ideation are becoming increasingly diffused in companies, but their true impact on innovation performance has been questioned. A factor that can explain some of the so far missing performance of these firm-internal systems for ideation is a lack of attention to the demand-side of ideation. Frequently, the focus of ideation is put more or less unilaterally on the supply-side, with the aim to generate as many or as good ideas as possible, instead of focusing on innovation needs. The aim of this article is to describe and analyse demand-driven collaborative ideation, with a particular emphasis on its management aspects. In order to empirically investigate how to manage this new approach to ideation, a case study of Ericsson, a Swedish multi-national corporation, has been performed. The results highlight that incentives, visibility and resources are three main components of demand-driven collaborative ideation and outline key challenges with this new approach to ideation.

  • A framework for analysing the role of innovation policy in regional innovation system development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 7:4, s. 237-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper develops a framework for analysing the role of innovation policy in regional innovation system (RIS) development. It specifically focuses on the influence of policy on a set of enabling conditions for RIS that have not been taken fully into account in previous innovation policy studies. Drawing on relevant literature on innovation systems, such as innovation policy, triple helix and policy mix etc., the enabling conditions for RIS development identified include both tangible and intangible dimensions of regional contexts, hinging around a range of wider institutional backdrops. The framework proposed provides an effective analytical tool for innovation policy evaluation and for designing innovation policies.

  • Regional social innovation : Pinpointing socially inclusive change for smart, inclusive and sustainable growth in European regional development policy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 7:2, s. 123-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how social innovation on the regional, sub-national, level helps pinpoint socially inclusive change for smart, inclusive and sustainable growth in European regional development policy. The article presents and analyzes new and unique data on regional social innovation from northern Sweden, where a participatory research approach was used to develop new theoretical and practical knowledge in cooperation between researchers and concerned societal actors. The study exposes that the studied examples pinpoint crucial elements by acknowledging the relevance of power-related dimensions such as gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality, rurality etc. when distinguishing societal challenges, social needs and social improvements, the relevance of civil society engagement when developing new solutions, the importance of interaction across personal, organizational, sectoral and spatial boundaries, and the importance of highlighting and challenging power-relations that ascribe higher status to a limited range of groups, organizations, sectors, perspectives and innovation forms.

  • Relating inclusiveness and innovativeness in inclusive innovation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 8:2, s. 103-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing interest in innovative solutions to societal challenges in policy and research has opened up the innovation area for a wider range of participants and beneficiaries than previously acknowledged, which in this article is studied in terms of inclusive innovation. In order to strengthen the conceptual connection between the dawning field of inclusive innovation studies and more established fields within innovation studies, the study scrutinizes how innovativeness relates to inclusiveness and vice versa in the light of previous knowledge. The conceptual outline is applied in a comparative case study of two regional innovation processes in Sweden, that share the ambition to tackle societal challenges by cross-boundary interaction, guided by values of equality and sustainability, at the same time as differing in scope and beneficiaries, due to their industrial and societal orientations. The combined theoretical and practical insights help delineate six distinct links between innovativeness and inclusiveness in inclusive innovation.

  • Tourism networking for regional place innovation in Swedish Lapland
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 7:4, s. 257-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents a case study of tourism networking in the regional destination Swedish Lapland, exploring how 'place innovation' can be used as a new scientific and practical concept to study co-innovative development of attractive and sustainable places. Drawing upon previous studies of inclusive innovation, place innovation and tourism destination development, it is distinguished how the networking among the involved entrepreneurs, designers, architects, destination management organisations, business promoters, municipalities, researchers etc., is characterised by negotiations in relation to the main components, target groups and innovation forms of place innovation. These encompass the components of configuration, content and communication, the target groups of visitors, residents and businesses, as well as the innovation forms of service innovation, user-driven innovation and social innovation. The specific set of interacting actors in the studied network made the negotiations result in a prioritisation of the commercial content over the public and civil content, of visitors over residents and businesses, and of service innovation and social innovation over user-driven innovation, affecting the prospects of attaining attractive and sustainable regional destinations.

  • The Failure of Community-Based Entrepreneurship in Haiti
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : Inderscience. - 1753-0679 .- 1753-0660. ; 2:1-2, s. 112-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Community-based entrepreneurship is entrepreneurship facilitating the emergence of other entrepreneurs. It is linked to communal and cooperative structures of various kinds. Haiti is a country with many such structures. Still, no community-based entrepreneurship has emerged. The article identifies the reasons for this. Traditional structures have dissolved or changed character. Modern cooperatives have had a bad start, partly because of political interference and the trade union movement has been largely politicised. The Haitian business tradition is individualistic. In the food market competition rules, in the coffee market oligopolistic collusion has alternated with stern competition, in other branches the state has acted to protect a few producers, and the assembly sector has had to compete in the international market. The gaps between the common man, the government and the elite have militated against community-based entrepreneurship. Finally, social capital and trust are lacking and this does not produce leaders that further entrepreneurship.
