  • Music as a method of coping with cancer : a qualitative study among cancer patients in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Arts and Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-3015 .- 1753-3023. ; 5:2, s. 152-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This study investigated patients' understanding of the role of music in coping and in influencing their well-being. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted based on semi-structured interviews with 17 cancer patients. Participants were chosen from a group of patients who had listened to or played music as a means of coping with their illness. Results: The study shows the importance of considering the roles that different kinds of music play in coping with cancer. The music of nature, healing music, religious music and cheerful music each have different benefits for patients. Conclusions: A patient's situation and his or her individual characteristics determine the types of music that can act as a useful or harmful coping strategy. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the types of individual characteristics that can make listening to different kinds of music a helpful or harmful coping method.

    • BackgroundDetails findings from a project on the potential for arts activities and art therapy to support the mental health and wellbeing of children living in Kashmir.MethodsThe intervention engaged 30 school children over the course of one year who produced various forms of artwork and performances. In this paper, we report on project impacts, drawing on some of our qualitative measures including observations and interviews.ResultsOur research details impacts and improvements in areas of emotional expression, belonging, and agency. We also found an important role for schools to create safe, secure, and caring spaces to allow students to express themselves and work through traumatic feelings in a non-judgemental way.ConclusionsSchool-based arts interventions can play an important role in the mental health and wellbeing of children. Critical here, however, are dedicated space, time, and resources to provide a supportive environment and to sustain activity in long-term.

  • Women’s experiences of change through art therapy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Arts and Health. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-3015 .- 1753-3023. ; 9:3, s. 199-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Art therapy is based on the conception that image making in a therapeutic context may facilitate processes of change. Methods: A semi-structured interview with focus on the image was conducted with 17 women in order to explore change, after which a qualitative content analysis was performed. Results: The women experienced internal change as a sudden, unexpected turning point or as a more gradual process, although some reported no internal change whatsoever. Five themes reflecting the women’s experiences of what was important for internal change emerged: Trust in the therapist, Belief in the method, Creative impulse, Meaning of the image and The art therapy process. Conclusions: Art therapy may contribute to change in the sense of moving from an inadequate to a healthier state. Even when art therapy does not lead to internal change it may be supportive and provide short-term help in everyday life.

  • Singing while caring for persons with dementia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Arts & Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-3015 .- 1753-3023. ; 3:1, s. 39-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Persons with dementia (PWDs) can suffer from major cognitive impairment, but are known to retain an ability to express both negative and positive emotions. Negative expressed emotions and resistance make caregiving problematic. Music Therapeutic Caregiving (MTC) – when caregivers sing for or together with PWDs during care – has been shown to decrease PWDs' negative expressed emotions and resistance, and increase positive expressed emotions. This single case study included two cases, two women with severe dementia, and measures expressed emotions and expressions of resistiveness to care during “usual” morning care situations and morning care situations with MTC. Video observations were conducted resulting in four recordings of usual morning care and four recordings of morning care with MTC. For analysis, the Observed Emotion Rating Scale and Resistiveness to Care Scale were used. Results revealed that in both cases, expressions of resistant behavior and negative emotions decreased, while expressions of positive emotions increased during morning care situations with MTC. The authors conclude that MTC may be an effective method for caregivers to use to facilitate care situations with PWDs, and also a way for PWDs to experience care situations as less unpleasant, and more joyful.

  • The benefits of caregiver singing and receptive music in dementia care : a qualitative study of professional caregivers' experiences
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Arts and Health. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1753-3015 .- 1753-3023.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: For persons with dementia, receptive music may reduce negative expressions and increase positive ones. Caregiver singing (CS) is an intervention aimed at facilitating care situations and involves caregivers singing for or together with persons with dementia during care activities. In the literature, CS is commonly addressed as a music activity rather than a care intervention. The aim was to describe caregivers' experiences of the reactions of persons with dementia when using CS and receptive music in dementia care.METHOD: The data comprised three focus group interviews with 12 professional caregivers in dementia care, analysed using qualitative content analysis.RESULTS: the analysis resulted in two themes: "CS increases interaction and builds companionship" and "Receptive music soothes, awakens memories and reflects the person's self".CONCLUSION: Both CS and receptive music was shown to have positive influences, and while the results were sometimes intertwined, CS was shown to better facilitate problematic care situations.

  • Brief report: A note on designing evaluations of health effects of cultural activities at work
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Arts & Health. - Routledge : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-3023 .- 1753-3015. ; 1:1, s. 89-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present pilot study was performed as part of the preparation for a larger controlled evaluation of health effects of a work site-based cultural programme. Forty participants, 10 in each of 4 work sites, were exposed to cultural events that took place once a week during a 3-month period. Standardised health questionnaires were distributed and blood samples collected before and after the three-month period. Visual analogue scales were distributed before and after the event, and from those average emotional effects for each individual were calculated. The individuals who had the highest average emotional effects were those who had the most pronounced deterioration in social support at work - a possible jealousy effect. The potentially most important effect to be evaluated is probably a collective beneficial “climate change” effect which cannot be studied if participants are sparsely distributed in the work site.

  • Sound of well-being - choir singing as an intervention to improve well-being among employees in two Norwegian county hospitals
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Arts and Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-3015 .- 1753-3023. ; 5:2, s. 93-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Interventions promoting a healthy psychosocial work environment are common, yet little is known about participation and effectiveness of such measures. The aim of this study was to describe differences between participants and nonparticipants in the Sound of Wellbeing (SOW) initiative, including a variety of demographic characteristics, perceived work environment, psychological factors and self-perceived health. The study also compared the participants' and non-participants' retrospective perception of change in the psychosocial work environment and their health during the project period. Methods: In this cultural organizational-level intervention, employees in two county hospitals participated as singers with different hospital departments forming their own choir. The majority of employees (1431 employees; 57.4%) completed a survey questionnaire after the intervention, of which 426 (29.8%) had participated. Results: We analysed the differences between participants and non-participants on several descriptive characteristics, personality, engagement, commitment, general health and demand-control-support, as well as their self-perceived change in some of these variables. Lower participation was found among men, employees above 62 and below 38 years of age, part-time employees, university-educated workers and health care workers. Furthermore, we found more engagement, organizational commitment and self-reported positive change with regard to psychosocial work environment and global health in participants compared to non-participants.Conclusions: The intervention showed promising results for incorporating cultural activities in the work environment, but further investigation of the effectiveness of organizational-level interventions using a pre-post design is needed.
