  • Hardness, elastic modulus and refractive index of oxynitride glasses prepared from woody biofuel ashes
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Glass Science and Techology. Part B. Physics and Chemistry of Glasses. - : Society of Glass Technology. - 1753-3562 .- 1750-6689. ; 58:6, s. 231-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the hardness, elastic modulus and refractive index values of the oxynitride glasses prepared from woody biofuel ashes. The glasses were prepared in nitrogen atmosphere at 1350-1500°C with addition of Ca metal as a precursor to the extra addition of this modifier. The glasses were homogenous, but appeared translucent grey to black. They contained up to 23 eq% of Ca and 5 eq% of N. The glass densities vary slightly between 2·76 to 2·92 g/cm3. The molar volume and compactness values vary between 8·01 cm3/mol to 8·31 cm3/mol and 0·446 to 0·462 respectively. Mechanical properties like hardness and reduced elastic modulus show values, up to 10 and 105 GPa, respectively. These properties are strongly correlated with the amount of N in the glass. The refractive index (1·54-1·75) increases with increasing N and Ca contents.

  • Electronic spectra and molar extinction coefficient of Cu2+ in mixed alkali-alkaline earth-silica glasses
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physics and Chemistry of Glasses-European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part B. - : Society of Glass Technology. - 1753-3562 .- 1750-6689. ; 56:1, s. 8-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CuO is a very common colorant in blue to turquoise-blue glasses. It is well known that the absorption peak at about 800 nm for silicate glasses is caused by Cu2+, octahedrally coordinated by 6 oxygen ions. It is also known that the [Cu+]/[Cu2+] ratio, the location of the absorption peak and the extinction coefficient of Cu2+ depends on the glass composition. Many investigations have been published with CuO as a colouring agent, but almost none with a mix of Na2O and K2O or CaO and BaO in the base glass. In this study, a base glass composition of 20R2O-10MO-70SiO2 (mol%, R=Na, K and M=Ca, Ba) is used and 0.40 mol% CuO is added. The molar extinction coefficient of Cu2+ is determined for the glasses and peak positions and heights are also presented and discussed.

  • Reflection loss correction method for accurate absorbance spectrum analysis of coloured glasses
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physics and Chemistry of Glasses. - Sheffield, UK : Society of Glass Technology. - 0031-9090. ; 60:4, s. 157-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four reflection loss correction methods have been investigated, theoretically and by analysing the measured absorbance spectra for eight samples prepared from the same Cu-doped soda–lime–silica glass. Method A, based on the measured refractive indices, was found to be the most practical and accurate. The methods B (subtracting the absorbance of an undoped host glass) and C (subtracting a thinner sample’s absorbance spectrum of the same glass) rely on additional measurements of a reference sample. Method A (that only removes the reflection loss from the absorbance) would show most clearly any additional loss due to the sample quality: polished surfaces and inhomogeneities, scattering by the glass structure, or absorption due to the impurities and host glass. Methods B and C would provide errors with similar wavelength dependence as the remaining attenuation coefficient spectrum, which would be very difficult to notice.Method C provides for the best quality samples the same median spectrum as Method A, but shows larger uncertainties than Method A, because the corrected spectrum needs to be multiplied by the inverse thickness difference of the two samples. Method D (subtracting a constant reflection loss) would cause errors due to the wavelength dependence of the glass refractive index.

  • Epigenome-wide association study of serum folate in maternal peripheral blood leukocytes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Epigenomics. - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1750-192X .- 1750-1911. ; 15:1, s. 39-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To perform an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of serum folate in maternal blood. Methods: Cross-ancestry (Europeans = 302, South Asians = 161) and ancestry-specific EWAS in the EPIPREG cohort were performed, followed by methyl quantitative trait loci analysis and association with cardiometabolic phenotypes. Replication was attempted using maternal folate intake and blood methylation data from the MoBa study and verified if the findings were significant in a previous EWAS of maternal serum folate in cord blood. Results & conclusion: cg19888088 (cross-ancestry) in EBF3, cg01952260 (Europeans) and cg07077240 (South Asians) in HERC3 were associated with serum folate. cg19888088 and cg01952260 were associated with diastolic blood pressure. cg07077240 was associated with variants in CASC15. The findings were not replicated and were not significant in cord blood.
