  • A Sociological Perspective on Emotions in the Judiciary
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 8:1, s. 32-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introducing a sociological perspective on judicial emotions, we argue that previous studies underemphasize structural and interactional dimensions. Through key concepts in the sociology of emotions we relate professional court actors’ emotion management to the emotional regime of the judiciary. Examples from the Swedish judiciary illustrate three main arguments: (a) The idea of rational justice as nonemotional must be investigated as a joint accomplishment including collective emotion management; (b) Judicial objectivity requires situated emotion management and empathy, orientated by emotions of pride/shame; (c) The structural dimensions of power/status mitigate feeling and display rules. The situated power of the judge is upheld by ritual deference from other court professionals. Concluding, we suggest topics to develop structural and interactional perspectives on judicial emotion

  • What Evokes Being Moved?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 12:2, s. 111-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent attempts to define being moved have difficulties agreeing on its eliciting conditions. The status quaestionis is often summarized as a question of whether the emotion is evoked by exemplifications of a wide range of positive core values or a more restricted set of values associated with attachment. This conclusion is premature. Study participants associate being moved with interactions with their loved ones not merely for what they exemplify but also for their affective bond to them. Being moved is elicited when we apprehend the value of entities to which we are connected through basic as well as extended forms of affiliative attachment. These comprise people, certain objects, and even abstract entities, including the unshakable life-guiding ideas we call “core values”.

  • Using Models to Predict Cultural Evolution From Emotional Selection Mechanisms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 12:2, s. 79-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cultural variants may spread by being more appealing, more memorable, or less offensive than other cultural variants. Empirical studies suggest that such emotional selection is a force to be reckoned with in cultural evolution. We present a research paradigm that is suitable for the study of emotional selection. It guides empirical research by directing attention to the circumstances under which emotions influence the likelihood that an individual will influence another individual to acquire a cultural variant. We present a modeling framework to translate such knowledge into specific and testable predictions of population-level change. A set of already analyzed basic cases can serve as a toolbox.

  • Are musical emotions invariant across cultures?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 4:3, s. 283-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cross-cultural studies of music and emotion are needed to assess the generalizability of results and also have important implications for theory development. However, progress requires that the domain is broken down into smaller constituents based on key distinctions. For example, a multilevel theory of emotion-causation implies that the relative contributions made by culture and biology differ depending on the underlying mechanism involved, which precludes general conclusions. Such an account of emotions to music might be cross-culturally valid at the level of mechanisms even if there is cross-cultural diversity in musical surface features and aroused emotions. An analysis in terms of psychological mechanisms can provide the necessary bridge between biological and social-constructionist perspectives on musical emotions.

  • Cross-Cultural Emotion Recognition and In-Group Advantage in Vocal Expression : A Meta-Analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 13:1, s. 3-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most research on cross-cultural emotion recognition has focused on facial expressions. To integrate the body of evidence on vocal expression, we present a meta-analysis of 37 cross-cultural studies of emotion recognition from speech prosody and nonlinguistic vocalizations, including expressers from 26 cultural groups and perceivers from 44 different cultures. Results showed that a wide variety of positive and negative emotions could be recognized with above-chance accuracy in cross-cultural conditions. However, there was also evidence for in-group advantage with higher accuracy in within- versus cross-cultural conditions. The distance between expresser and perceiver culture, measured via Hofstede's cultural dimensions, was negatively correlated with recognition accuracy and positively correlated with in-group advantage. Results are discussed in relation to the dialect theory of emotion.

  • Migration as a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy: What Role do Emotions Play?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 15:4, s. 267-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change intersecting with complex socio-economic and political processes has produced distinctive patterns of crisis migration. However there exists a significant gap in understanding and theorizing these forms of migration creating significant policy challenges. Using a case study of an interstate migrant settlement in Bengaluru, India this article unpacks migration as an adaptation strategy through the lens of emotions. The article offers significant insights into how emotions affect the choice of migration as an adaptation strategy and shapes the differential experiences of risks and vulnerability for different groups of people. Emphasizing such relational aspects of migration, the article calls for more research that develops a nuanced understanding of the emotional landscapes of migrants across migration pathways.

  • A Trade-off between Broad and Specific Ideas of Neural Self-Other Overlap
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : Sage Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 4:1, s. 36-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preston and Hofelich's (2012) conceptualization of self-other overlap includes both neural and subjective levels, but neural overlap is given a central and necessary role in their model. The model's broad scope includes many types of empathy phenomena and points to stable patterns and relationships among them. A self-other overlap idea that can cover such a range of phenomena makes gains in explanatory cohesiveness. This may come at the expense of specificity and predictive power in investigating particular neural systems implicated in empathy. The neural overlap concept is broadly useful, but putting it to work in neuroimaging experiments reveals operational ambiguities. Investigating the details of specific systems might suggest further refinements in how we identify meaningful neural self-other overlap.

  • Researching Emotion in Courts and the Judiciary : A Tale of Two Projects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Emotion Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1754-0739 .- 1754-0747. ; 7:2, s. 145-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dominant image of judicial authority is emotional detachment; however, judicial work involves emotion. This presents a challenge for researchers to investigate emotions where they are disavowed. Two projects, one in Australia and another in Sweden, use multiple sociological research methods to study judicial experience, expression, and management of emotion. In both projects, observational research examines judicial officers' display of emotion in court, while interviews investigate judicial emotional experiences. Surveys in Australia identify emotions judicial officers generally find important in their work; in Sweden, shadowing allows researchers to investigate individual judicial emotion experiences and expression. Evaluating the different methods used demonstrates the limitations and effectiveness of particular research designs, the value of multiple methods and the challenges for researching emotion.
