Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- This article investigates three twenty-first century Swedish novels about mothers who leave their children, in light of a contemporary Swedish context, where the nuclear family has gained a stronger position while mothers struggle to balance different ideals. The novels take issue particularly with cultural ideals of good motherhood in two ways. First, the novels represent mothers who engage in a kind of good motherhood that becomes excessive and thus subversive. Second, their representations of failing mothers can be seen as resistance to a discourse that expects women to meet ideals that not only are unrealistic but also emphasize individual success instead of challenging structural inequalities. Moreover, the novels’ representations of family constellations challenge the nuclear family ideal and suggest alternative ways of organizing close relationships.

Recension (refereegranskat)abstract
- The Bloomsbury Handbook to Toni Morrison is a rich collection of critical essays discussing the acclaimed African American author’s oeuvre and the first to appear after Morrison’s passing in August 2019. The volume, divided into three parts, includes thoughtful analyses of Morrison’s novels, insightful explorations of how her texts relate to our contemporary world, and useful discussions of her texts in pedagogical contexts. Furthermore, Morrison’s critical writings are discussed in many of the essays in the volume, albeit not in a separate section. The individual essays are generally strong contributions to Morrison criticism; here, unfortunately, I can only mention a few of the 25 essays included in the book.
