  • Eastbound tourism in the Cold War: the history of the Swedish communist travel agency Folkturist
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Tourism History. - 1755-182X .- 1755-1838. ; 10:2, s. 130-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millions of Westerners went on holiday behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. This article considers the place of Eastern Europe in the international travel industry through the prism of Folkturist, a travel agency owned by the Communist Party of Sweden. By analysing Folkturist's business strategies and interactions with the East European tourist industries, the article shows the competing interests at stake when the market for eastbound leisure tourism expanded. Balancing the quest for profit with political goals was a constant challenge for Folkturist, as it was for the various organisations and institutions engaged in the tourist industry in the socialist states. By analysing Folkturist's advertisement strategies and package tour organisation and those of its commercial competitors in Sweden, the article argues that traditional concepts of political tourism fail to capture the pragmatism of political entrepreneurs and the impact they had on the market for leisure tourism to Cold War Eastern Europe.

  • Seeking adventure and authenticity: Swedish bicycle touring in Europe during the interwar period
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Tourism History. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1755-182X .- 1755-1838. ; 9:1, s. 44-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines how young Swedes travelled Europe by bicycle during the interwar period, utilising their travelogues as primary source. Notwithstanding their often limited literary qualities, these accounts offer a valuable tool for capturing peoples’ experiences, motivations, and practices. The article challenges sequential understandings of mobility and instead frames different mobility practices as co-existing but under constant reconfiguration. As car driving emerged and grew, cycling never disappeared, but changed as a practice under the influence of automobility. The pursuit and enjoyment of adventure remained central to cycling in the interwar period – although those involved came from new social groups. The framing of bicycling as an authentic activity even grew stronger. At the same time, cycle touring was reinterpreted as a less comfortable and convenient mode in relation to the competing but still only emergent practice of car touring. Meanwhile, infrastructures were recast to the benefit of motor-powered vehicles. The transformation of roads acted as a catalyst in the reconfiguration between cycling and driving.

  • From sightseeing to sunbathing : changing traditions in Swedish package tours; from edification by bus to relaxation by airplane in the 1950s and 1960s
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Tourism History. - 1755-182X .- 1755-1838. ; 2:3, s. 149-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The changing notions of tourism are analyzed by example of Swedish package tours in the 1950s and 1960s, when the dominant means of transportation for package tours changed from buses to airplanes. Simultaneously, Swedish mass tourism developed explosively so that the package tour markets of Scandinavia in the mid-1960s were the largest per capita in Europe. While package tours by bus, dominating from the interwar period until the 1960s, implied city sightseeing and visits to cultural landmarks, package tours by airplanes brought focus on sunbathing on beaches and salt-water swimming. This transformation of purpose of the package tours from peregrination to leisure life hinged on new means of transportation making it possible for tourism to find additional and more varied raisons d'être in comparison to the traditional view of it as a romantic escape from the conditions of modern society.

  • Confronting class : the American motel in early post-war Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Tourism History. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1755-182X .- 1755-1838. ; 5:3, s. 305-324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Swedish tourism discourse, the car-centred American way of life was by the mid-1950s met with enthusiasm. In the case of accommodation, it was above all the motel that served to symbolise the positive values associated with the American model of modernity. The great expectations placed on the motel did not materialise as anticipated, however. In fact, already by the early 1960s, the motel had been brought into disrepute, and it would remain a marginal phenomenon in Swedish auto tourism. This article singles out class as one of the decisive factors for this change of events. The tourism discourse was dominated by the bourgeois middle classes, and only a few of the Swedish motels were built to meet their expectations. The majority offered instead basic lodging for truck drivers, an occupational group embodying a working-class culture that many placed at the very bottom of the social hierarchy. The motel thus materialised in two entirely different cultural and social settings, and it developed into an arena for cultural class-related confrontations. Middle-class dreams collided with blue-collar realities, and in this clash, the discontent latent in great expectations became manifest.
