  • Non-Local Modelling of Strain Softening in Machining Simulations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-local damage model for strain softening in a machining simulation is presented in this paper. The coupled damage-plasticity model consists of a physically based dislocation density model and a damage model driven by plastic straining in combination with the stress state. The predicted chip serration is highly consistent with the measurement results.

  • Structural and electrochemical characterization of BaCe0.7Zr0.2Y0.05Zn0.05O3 as an electrolyte for SOFC-H
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 121:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a potential electrolyte for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC-Hs) and to get better protonic conductivity and stability, zinc doped BCZY material has been found to be promising. In this study, we report a new composition of proton conductors BaCe0.7Zr0.2Y0.05Zn0.05O3 (BCZYZn5) which was investigated using XRD, SEM and conductivity measurements. Rietveld refinement of the XRD data revel a cubic perovskite structure with Pm-3m space group. BaCe0.7Zr0.2Y0.05Zn0.05O3 shows cell parameter a = 4.3452(9) Å. Scanning electron microscopy images shows that the grain sizes are large and compact which gives the sample high density and good protonic conductivity. The total conductivity in wet atmosphere is significantly higher than that of dry condition and the conductivity was found to be 0.276 × 10-3 Scm-1 and 0.204 × 10-3 Scm-1 at 600°C in wet and dry Ar, respectively. This study indicated that perovskite electrolyte BCZYZn5 is a promising material for the next generation intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs).

  • Effect of strain gradient on the microstructure and mechanical properties of pearlitic steel
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 580:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pearlitic steels, with a combination of good strength and wear properties, are commonly used for railway rails. The passage of trains creates large shear strain gradients in the surface layer of rails. Knowledge of the microstructural evolution and material properties as related to the shear strain in this layer is therefore important for prediction both of crack evolution and fatigue life. A bi-axial torsion-compression machine was used to deform fully pearlitic R260 rail steel test bars to create a similar gradient structure. Uniaxial tension and compression tests were performed on these pre-deformed test bars to evaluate the mechanical properties of the material. The local microstructural parameters, such as thickness of the ferrite and cementite lamellae, the dislocation density in the ferrite lamellae, the interlamellar spacing and eth local hardness at different places across the diameter of the bars, as well as microstructural evolution across the radius, were characterized. An attempt to set up a correlation between the local microstructural parameters, hardness and the macro mechanical properties is made and discussed in the present study.

  • Nanofibre distribution in composites manufactured with epoxy reinforced with nanofibrillated cellulose : model prediction and verification
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study a model based on simple scattering is developed and used to predict the distribution of nanofibrillated cellulose in composites manufactured by resin transfer moulding (RTM) where the resin contains nanofibres. The model is a Monte Carlo based simulation where nanofibres are randomly chosen from probability density functions for length, diameter and orientation. Their movements are then tracked as they advance through a random arrangement of fibres in defined fibre bundles. The results of the model show that the fabric filters the nanofibres within the first 20 µm unless clear inter-bundle channels are available. The volume fraction of the fabric fibres, flow velocity and size of nanofibre influence this to some extent. To verify the model, an epoxy with 0.5 wt.% Kraft Birch nanofibres was made through a solvent exchange route and stained with a colouring agent. This was infused into a glass fibre fabric using an RTM process. The experimental results confirmed the filtering of the nanofibres by the fibre bundles and their penetration in the fabric via the inter-bundle channels. Hence, the model is a useful tool for visualising the distribution of the nanofibres in composites in this manufacturing process.

  • ESS Cryogenic System Process Design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-899X .- 1757-8981. ; 101, s. 012011-012011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a neutron-scattering facility funded and supported in collaboration with 17 European countries in Lund, Sweden. Cryogenic cooling at ESS is vital particularly for the linear accelerator, the hydrogen target moderators, a test stand for cryomodules, the neutron instruments and their sample environments. The paper will focus on specific process design criteria, design decisions and their motivations for the helium cryoplants and auxiliary equipment. Key issues for all plants and their process concepts are energy efficiency, reliability, smooth turn-down behaviour and flexibility. The accelerator cryoplant (ACCP) and the target moderator cryoplant (TMCP) in particular need to be prepared for a range of refrigeration capacities due to the intrinsic uncertainties regarding heat load definitions. Furthermore the paper addresses questions regarding process arrangement, 2 K cooling methodology, LN2 precooling, helium storage, helium purification and heat recovery.

  • On the modelling of electro-viscoelastic response of electrostrictive polyurethane elastomers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 9th World Congress on Computational Mechanics and 4th Asian Pacific Congress on Computational Mechanics. - 1757-899X .- 1757-8981. ; 10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electroactive polymers (EAP) deform under electric fields. This effect in fact generates various new fields of engineering applications of high technological interest. As an advantage, EAP may undergo deformations much larger than those capable by electroactive ceramics-however, to the price of acting at comparatively low forces. As common for polymers, EAP exhibit time-dependent material behaviour. The model proposed in this contribution, on the one hand, captures these electro-viscoelastic effects and, on the other hand, also nicely fits into iterative finite element formulations in order to simulate general boundary value problems. While the deformation itself as well as the electric potential are introduced as global degrees of freedom, the internal variables accounting for the viscous response are incorporated at the so-called local integration point level. Apart form calibrating the model against experimental data, a simple coupled finite element example is studied to show the applicability of the finite deformation electro-viscoelastic formulation proposed.

  • X-ray tomography based numerical analysis of stress concentrations in non-crimp fabric reinforced composites - assessment of segmentation methods
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 942:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study two automated segmentation methodologies of an X-ray computer tomography based numerical analysis are compared. These are then assessed based on their influence on the stress distribution results of finite element models of glass fibre reinforced composites made out of non-crimp fabrics. Non-crimp fabrics reinforced composites are commonly used for wind turbine blades due to their high stiffness to weight ratio for the dominating bending load. Finite element modelling based on X-ray computer tomography allows the reduction of the cost and can accelerate the development process of the key material parameters of wind turbine blades. Recent research progress in the last years has laid the basis for such a procedure. Those processes must be easy applicable, fast and accurate. The main challenge in current methodologies is the segmentation part. The segmentation methods applied for this study have overcome this issue by being automated. This allows for a comparatively fast transfer from X-ray computer tomographic data to finite element results.

  • Power Monitoring and Control System for Medium Voltage Smart Grid Using IoT
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a power monitoring and control system for a medium voltage smart grid system. The smart grid interconnects the power sources between solar PV panel and 220V distribution network. This system consisting major components of inverters, measuring meters, solar charge controllers, relays, Arduino NANO and Raspberry Pi. The Current, power and energy readings are duly recorded. The Internet of Things (IoT) plays the vital role in the data communication between the sensors and electric power system. The voltage and current sensor data is used for the protection of power system network. In the traditional systems only the communication is uni-directional. The reliability of power supply is increased by used the bi directional network communication medium such as IoT. The tabulated results of voltage levels between 203.5V up to 212.8V shows the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed design. The proposed IoT model demonstrated the bidirectional communication from the sensors to the control unit and vice versa.

  • A Study of the Boundary Conditions in the ISO-16630 Hole Expansion Test
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 1238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As new and more advanced sheet metal materials are introduced to the market, more accurate techniques for determination of failure limits are needed. One area that needs attention is edge formability, where the ISO-16630 standardized Hole Expansion Test currently is used to express this through the Hole Expansion Ratio. Over the years, this standard has been criticized for producing a large scatter in repeated tests. This paper investigates a new setup for the Hole Expansion Test which introduces draw beads into the setup to ensure sufficient restraining of the specimen during the test in an effort to reduced the scatter. In total 62 tests of a DP800 steel alloy were executed, but a large scatter in the results were still seen. It was therefore concluded that a lack of restraining force in the Hole Expansion Test was not the primary cause of the reported scatter seen in other tests.
