  • Info-computational constructivism and cognition
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Constructivist Foundations. - 1782-348X. ; 9:2, s. 223-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: At present, we lack a common understanding of both the process of cognition in living organisms and the construction of knowledge in embodied, embedded cognizing agents in general, including future artifactual cognitive agents under development, such as cognitive robots and softbots. Purpose: This paper aims to show how the info-computational approach (IC) can reinforce constructivist ideas about the nature of cognition and knowledge and, conversely, how constructivist insights (such as that the process of cognition is the process of life) can inspire new models of computing. Method: The info-computational constructive framework is presented for the modeling of cognitive processes in cognizing agents. Parallels are drawn with other constructivist approaches to cognition and knowledge generation. We describe how cognition as a process of life itself functions based on info-computation and how the process of knowledge generation proceeds through interactions with the environment and among agents. Results: Cognition and knowledge generation in a cognizing agent is understood as interaction with the world (potential information), which by processes of natural computation becomes actual information. That actual information after integration becomes knowledge for the agent. Heinz von Foerster is identified as a precursor of natural computing, in particular bio computing. Implications: IC provides a framework for unified study of cognition in living organisms (from the simplest ones, such as bacteria, to the most complex ones) as well as in artifactual cognitive systems. Constructivist content: It supports the constructivist view that knowledge is actively constructed by cognizing agents and shared in a process of social cognition. IC argues that this process can be modeled as info-computation.

  • The Relation between Future State Maximization and von Foerster's Ethical Imperative
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Constructivist Foundations. - 1782-348X. ; 16:1, s. 62-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • I review von Foerster's (bio) computational approach to cognition in relation to foresight and hindsight, and to his Ethical Imperative. For him, ethics must remain implicit and becomes manifest through metaphysics and dialogics. Only under this condition can the relevance of Future State Maximization for the system that is modelled be established.

  • Why we need Info-computational Constructivism
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Constructivist Foundations. - 1782-348X. ; 9:2, s. 246-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The variety of commentaries to my target article has shown that IC impacts on many disciplines, from physics to biology, to cognitive science, to ethics. Given its young age, infocomputation still needs to fill in many gaps, some of which were pointed out by the commentators. My goal is both to illuminate some general topics of infocomputation, and to answer specific questions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of "constructivist teaching" seems unattainable for two reasons: a philosophical and an empirical one. Also, Hugh Gash's survey is not so much about radical constructivism in education, but a review of different connected ideas labeled "constructivism" that have dominated the educational field.

  • Open Peer Commentaries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Constructivist Foundations. - : ALEXANDER RIEGLER. - 1782-348X. ; 3:2, s. 65-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Open peer commentary on the target article "Who Conceives of Society?" by Ernst von Glasersfeld. First paragraph: Ernst von Glasersfeld sets out to explain how familiar patterns (signs) arise in private experience - and how they are extracted or " recognized" as such. These patterns are recursive, which imposes significance (familiarity) on them, and are, in the course of time, collected into a " bulk of experience." I think a convinced constructivist can - if hesitantly - accept his rendering, even though it is one that lacks the stringency one expects from a supposedly natural scientist ( 46). However, the crucial point is that this paper does not address the convinced constructivist but rather the opposite camps, and I doubt he succeeds in convincing them.

  • Describing Sustained Constructionist Activity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Constructivist Foundations. - : ALEXANDER RIEGLER. - 1782-348X. ; 14:3, s. 314-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Buteau, Sacristin and Muller's target article raises the pertinent issue of how to describe a sustained undergraduate course on computational thinking and programming for mathematical learning. There is so little work on this issue that it is worthwhile to reflect on this study and to raise questions regarding the options and tools available or needed to understand sustained constructionist activity. Here, I focus on questions regarding how to understand the instructor's craft knowledge in practice and what constructionist mathematical learning may look like when programming is at the service of engagement with mathematical concepts.
