  • Digital Diasporas : An Overview of the Research Areas of Migrationand New Media Through a Narrative Literature Review
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : University of Jyväskylä, Finland. - 1795-6889. ; 15:2, s. 142-180
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic research on migration and the use of new media constitutes a growing field. The first studies dealing explicitly with the field appeared in the end of the 1990s. Now, it has become an established research area. The impact and importance of the new technologies for migrants is well established. Appropriation of ICTs and new media environments have become a ubiquitous feature of everyday life in migrant groups. The research area is still understudied, characterized by rapid changes and shifts, and is shaped by the changing structural conditions of migrants and the proliferation of forms of media. In this article, I provide an overview of the developing research area through a review of the existing literature on migration and the use of new media. I elaborate the various aspects of the research field, the research category, current themes and topics, theoretical and conceptual discussions, and methodological approaches

  • User expressions translated into requirements
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : Centre of Sociological Research, NGO. - 1795-6889. ; 6:2, s. 212-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grounding the development of mobile and ubiquitous services on actual needs and behaviors of users, rather than on designers intuition, is a well established tradition today. However, gathering data about users in different contexts usually result in large amounts of data that have to be analyzed and translated into requirements. This is a crucial process in the development cycle and its outcome is usually very dependent on the preconceptions of the developers or researchers. Despite this strong element of subjective influence the translation process is seldom made transparent. Nor are the user needs related to psychological discussions and existing taxonomies. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to contribute to the field by presenting a process for translating user expressions to needs and later to requirements using Reiss taxonomy of human needs as a theoretical base. Using this translation process we were able to identify two hierarchical levels of needs: needs of a service and needs in the service. The process also made it possible for us to see needs hidden in general expressions and to reformulate them accordingly. Further, it generated a clear traceability from user expressions to requirements, and finally, confirmed the importance of focusing on, and understanding, the situated needs of users.

  • Creating digital musical instruments with and for children: Including vocal sketching as a method for engaging in codesign
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : Centre of Sociological Research, NGO. - 1795-6889. ; 16:3, s. 348-371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A class of master of science students and a group of preschool children codesigned new digital musical instruments based on workshop interviews involving vocal sketching, a method for imitating and portraying sounds. The aim of the study was to explore how the students and children would approach vocal sketching as one of several design methods. The children described musical instruments to the students using vocal sketching and other modalities (verbal, drawing, gestures). The resulting instruments built by the students were showcased at the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts in Stockholm. Although all the children tried vocal sketching during preparatory tasks, few employed the method during the workshop. However, the instruments seemed to meet the children’s expectations. Consequently, even though the vocal sketching method alone provided few design directives in the given context, we suggest that vocal sketching, under favorable circumstances, can be an engaging component that complements other modalities in codesign involving children.

  • Capturing user experiences of mobile information technology with the repertory grid technique
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - Jyväskylä, Finland : Open Science Centre. - 1795-6889. ; 6:2, s. 250-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the application of the repertory grid technique (RGT) as a tool for capturing the user experience of technological artifacts. In noting the artificiality of assessing the emotional impact of interactive artifacts in isolation from cognitive judgments, we argue that HCI techniques must provide practical solutions regarding how to assess the holistic meaning of users’ interactive experiences. RGT is a candidate for this role. This paper takes the reader step by step through setting up, conducting, and analyzing a RGT study. RGT is a technique on the border between qualitative and quantitative research, unique in that it respects the wholeness of cognition and does not separate the intellectual from the emotional aspects of the user experience. Compared to existing methods in HCI, RGT has the advantage of treating experiences holistically, while also providing a degree of quantitative precision and generalizability in their capture.

  • Understanding search behavior in professional social networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : Agora Center, University of Jyväskylä. - 1795-6889. ; 7:3, s. 194-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an empirical study of social interaction in a professional social network. As the point of departure, we take previous research into distributed work and information foraging theory to explore interaction search behavior of individuals active in professional networks, examining how social factors govern their behavior. For this exploration, we focused on the process through which relevant collaborators are chosen to execute shared work tasks in the area of logistics, and identified six characteristics of the explored processes. We recognized the “survival of the social” as a cornerstone for efficient and long-term professional networks and outlined design implications arising from our findings. More specifically, we found that participants are oriented to solutions that involve active social agents and social relations, rather than optimizing based on task characteristics, efficiency, and cost. These behaviors motivate the need for the concept of social interaction foraging.

  • Citizens response in crisis: Individual and collective efforts to enhance community resilience
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - 1795-6889. ; 10:2, s. 68-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on the process and findings of an extensive research project with the aim of investigating present initiatives and approaches within the area of community resilience and citizen involvement. The paper specifically addresses which emerging sociotechnical approaches can be discerned within these initiatives. The discussion is structured within three categories of potential voluntary engagement; organized volunteers, semiorganized individuals, and “nonorganized” individuals. The empirical material assembled in the research project is contrasted with contemporary international research literature regarding sociotechnical means for enhancing community resilience. Swedish approaches, as is noted in the Conclusion of the paper, are primarily focused on consuming information in the pre-event phase, rather than on producing information and engaging in collaboration in the response phase.

  • Gender and the telephone : Voice and emotions shaping and gendering space
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : Centre of Sociological Research, NGO. - 1795-6889. ; 9:2, s. 157-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the field of communication studies the topic of telephony and the gendering of space via voice and emotions have received limited attention. The focus of this article is on how telephone conversations are mediated by voice and emotions, which in turn shape and gender social space. The methodology is a collaborative autoethnographic design based on diary notes and memory work. Two central themes emerge from the findings, which explain how space becomes gendered when using the telephone. The first explores the voice and relations of power and the second examines the interstices between work, caring and the telephone. Our findings reveal the central role of work and caring and how these spaces are constantly being transgressed and transformed as the mobile phone becomes an important appendage for sensory perceptions of hearing/listening/voice. We argue that these themes point toward the crucial impact of emotions in the construction of multiple and gendered spatialities of telephony.

  • Dark Design Patterns : An End-user Perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - Jyväskylä : University of Jyväskylä. - 1795-6889. ; 16:2, s. 170-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of websites and mobile applications available is growing continually, as are the persuasive approaches to influence human behavior and decision making. Although designing for persuasion offers several potential benefits, recent developments expose various deceptive designs, that is, dark patterns, that utilize psychological factors to nudge people toward, from someone else’s perspective, desired directions. This paper contributes to an increased awareness of the phenomenon of dark patterns through our exploring how users perceive and experience these patterns. Hence, we chose a qualitative research approach, with focus groups and interviews, for our exploration. Our analysis shows that participants were moderately aware of these deceptive techniques, several of which were perceived as sneaky and dishonest. Respondents further expressed a resigned attitude toward such techniques and primarily blamed businesses for their occurrence. Users considered their dependency on services employing these practices, thus making it difficult to avoid fully dark patterns.

  • Bodystorming for Movement-based Interaction Design
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - Finland : Centre of Sociological Research, NGO. - 1795-6889. ; 12:2, s. 193-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After a decade of movement-based interaction in human–computer interaction, designing for the moving body still remains a challenge. Research in this field requires methods to help access, articulate, and harness embodied experiences in ways that can inform the design process. To address this challenge, this article appropriates bodystorming, an embodied ideation method for movement-based interaction design. The proposed method allows for early consideration of the physical, collocated, and social aspects of a designed activity as illustrated with two explorative workshops in different application domains: interactive body games and interactive performances. Using a qualitative methods approach, we used video material from the workshops, feedback from participants, and our own experience as participants and facilitators to outline important characteristics of the bodystorming method in the domain of movement-based interaction. The proposed method is compared with previous ones and application implications are discussed.
