  • Postural stability, physical activity, aerobic capacity and their associations for young people with and without intellectual disabilities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - 1803-3857. ; 7:1, s. 22-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Previous studies show that people with intellectual disability (ID) appear to have impaired postural stability, a lower level of physical activity, and lower aerobic capacity compared to persons without ID, limitations that could affect their health. This study investigates these physical functions and their associations in a group of young people with ID compared to an age-matched group without ID. In total, this cross-sectional study included 106 high school students (16-20 years): 57 students with mild to moderate ID and 49 agematched students without ID (control group). Tests were performed for postural stability, level of physical activity, and aerobic capacity. Both females and males with ID had significantly lower estimated maximum oxygen uptake (l O2/min) (p< 0.001 for females and p=0.004 for males) and a lower aerobic capacity expressed relative to body weight (ml O2/ kg*min) (p< 0.001 for females and p=0.012 for males) compared to age-matched peers. Analyses of associations were made using the Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multivariate linear regression analysis. No significant associations could be found. Physical status appears impaired for young people with ID and functions, such as postural stability, should be evaluated separately

  • Difference in balance capacity for Special Olympics athletes and non-athletes with intellectual disabilities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - : European Federation of Adapted Physical Activities. - 1803-3857. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fall incidents are a significant health problem for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and physical activity improves balance capacity and can prevent the risk of falling. The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® offers health screenings and education to athletes with ID. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore whether Special Olympics athletes have better balance capacity than non-athletes with ID. During the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games 2020, athletes and non-athletes participated in the Healthy Athletes programme. The results of athletes (n=47) and non-athletes (n=25) for balance tests (i.e. single leg stance, functional reach and timed sit-to stand test) and health markers (i.e. blood pressure and body mass index) were analysed. Athletes showed higher balance capacity, more physical activity at moderate intensity and a lower body mass index and diastolic blood pressure compared to non-athletes. However, the balance capacity of both athletes and non-athletes with ID were low, lower than for people without ID. From this study, Special Olympics athletes showed higher physical activity on moderate intensity and higher balance capacity which can decrease the risk of fall incidents compared to non-athletes.

  • Perspectives on the integration of students with disabilities in physical education: An umbrella review of reviews published between 2010 and 2020
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - : Palacky University Olomouc. - 1803-3857. ; 14:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research regarding the integration of students with disabilities in physical education has progressively increased during the last three decades, as has the number of published reviews. The objective of this umbrella review was to synthesise findings from reviews published between 2010 and 2020 to obtain a comprehensive picture of the current literature regarding the integration of students with disabilities in physical education. Search strings were developed and the four electronic databases Educational Research Complete, ERIC, Scopus, and SportDiscus were searched to identify reviews published between January 2010 and January 2020. After removing duplicates, 117 individual documents were screened and reviewed for eligibility, and eight reviews published between 2012 and 2019 were included. These reviews included quantitative, qualitative, and mix methods research. From the reviews, to some degree, SWDs, SWODs and PETs have mixed experiences from and ambiguous attitudes towards the integration of SWDs in PE.

  • Children with neurodevelopmental disorder participating in an intervention -physical activity on prescription (PAP) : parent's reasoning about their children's participation in sport
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - Olomouc : European Federation of Adapted Physical Activity. - 1803-3857. ; 16, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children with disabilities engage less in physical activity and sports during their spare time compared to their peers without disabilities. Modern sports, contextual factors, and parents’ fear of discrimination have been discussed as barriers to participation. The aim of this study is to describe parents’ experiences of their child with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) participating in a PAP intervention. The intervention involved a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic (CAP), the Regional Sport Federation, and local sport clubs in the southwestern region of Sweden. A sample of 13 parents took part in semi-structured interviews, and qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis. The analysis resulted in three main categories, including sub-categories. By being part of a collaboration, the parents experienced two different worlds coming together, the CAP and the sport world, and they were also aware of the collaboration’s organisation and need for resources. In growing with sports, the parents described that treating the children with respect involved learning sports from the child’s condition and creating a social space for them. Regarding individual motivation for participating in sports, the parents expressed that the children felt proud to be part of the PAP intervention and experienced a sense of belonging in the group with the other children. The study highlights perspectives for developing sports for all in local sport clubs and improving sports as part of the CAP care for children with NDD. © 2023 by the authors.

  • SwingPingis ‒ An innovative and norm critical physical activity aid for everyone, everywhere
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - Olomouk : European Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (EUFAPA). - 1803-3857. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many children with disabilities face the risk of illness by being excluded from physical education. The purpose of this article is to investigate an open collaborative innovation that can contribute to more inclusive elements in physical education, resulting in a better quality of education for children and youths with a disability. The question asked here is whether performative, bodily, geographical, norm critical and collaborative aspects involved in the use of an innovative aid called Swing Table Tennis (SwingPingis), has any impact on teachers’ perception of inclusion and well-being for the children using the innovation. The methods used in this study are interviews of children with disabilities and their physical education teachers, combined with participant observations carried out during classes using the tool. The findings indicate children and teachers perceive the tool as a means to an embodied, creative part of collaboration and involvement during the lesson, as well as in the teaching of the subject Physical Education. Children perceived SwingPingis as an opportunity to get motor training and build bodily capacities to perform, which in turn were reported as a feeling of the joy in movement. Teachers emphasize SwingPingis usefulness and accessibility. It is an asset in teaching as well as enabling and complementing other motor training in teaching.

  • Differences in Special Olympics athletes and non-athletes with intellectual disability : physical activity, strength and aerobic fitness
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - 1803-3857. ; 16:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adults with intellectual disability (ID) have higher degree of sedentary lifestyle and participate in physical activity less compared to the general population. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyse if participation in Special Olympics increase the level of physical activity (PA) and influence physical health aspects such as BMI, muscular strength and aerobic fitness for people with ID. Data were analysed from the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games 2020, on athletes (n=38) and non-athletes with ID (n=20), of strength (partial sit-up-, seated push-up-, handgrip- and timed sit to stand test), aerobic fitness (2 min step up test), BMI and a PA-questionnaire. Athletes showed higher levels of PA moderate intensity, both groups had high BMI, low levels of aerobic fitness and strength. This study indicate that Special Olympics athletes and non-athletes with ID need to increase their physical activity of both strength training and PA higher intensity to improve physical health aspects.
