  • Investment and innovative development of industrial enterprises as the basis for the technological singularity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - : LLC CPC Business Perspectives. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 17:3, s. 477-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investment and innovative development of industrial enterprises is driven by the influence on the sensitive indicators of their activity, which characterize technological singularity. Therefore, it is expedient to define them using adequate economic and mathematical methods that will identify the development and growth points that are characterized by the accumulation of information and are a manifestation of singularity. The purpose of the article is to determine the main sensitive indicators of the investment and innovative development of industrial enterprises, which are the points of technological singularity. The article proposes conceptual provisions for evaluating the investment-innovation activity of enterprises as a basis for their development. These provisions consider the activity of economic entities according to three states (functioning, growth, and development); evaluation of investment and innovation activities, both individually and in conjunction with the official statistical reporting of enterprises using a well-founded minimum sufficient system of partial indicators defined through the multidimensional factor analysis and combined into integral and summarizing indicators; determination of technological singularity points as a result of prediction of partial and summarizing indicators' values via the neural networks method. A methodological approach is developed to substantiate the technological singularity points, the managerial influence on which is provided by the development of enterprises. The methodological approach is based on considering the investment-innovation activity nonlinearity, both explicit and latent tendencies of development, situationality and variability of its goals, strategic orientation and possible technological singularity of an enterprise. The proposals submitted were implemented based on statistical reports of the machine-building enterprises for 2014-2018.

  • Striving for spontaneity - bureaucracy strikes back
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Problems and Perspectives in Management. - 1810-5467. ; 4:2, s. 144-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the intertwined relationship between order (bureaucracy) and spontaneity (through the organisational modes of competition and co-operation respectively). The purpose is to explore what happens when spontaneity attempts are confronted to the bureaucratic order, and why is this? The empirical setting is the public sector, which seems to be an exceptionally suitable environment to investigate spontaneity attempts in bureaucratic orders. More specifically, the article rests upon two qualitative case studies from Sweden, one in the County Council of Stockholm (where competition was introduced in health care) and one in the county of Västerbotten (Where interagency co-operation was aimed for in health care and social service). From the theoretical notion that competition and co-operation share an underlying assumption of spontaneity, we empirically identify two bureaucratic forces replying to spontaneity attempts, corresponding to "what happens" in the purpose: new structures and formalised devices, which frame the rebureaucratisation processes in both cases. A detailed analysis of the particulars of the rebureaucratisation process, corresponding to the "why" in the purpose, reveals three underlying dimensions of re-bureaucratisation - structural bureaucracy, ontological bureaucracy and habitual re-bureaucratisation. To conclude, if organisational modes attempting at spontaneity are introduced without careful reflection, bureaucracy will strike back.

  • Innovation and Productivity in German and Swedish Manufacturing Firms : Is there a common story?
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 2, s. 184-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have documented extensive heterogeneity in firm performance within countries, and innovation has been found as an important determinant. This paper addresses the issue of innovation firm performance across countries. A growing number of national firm level studies on the innovation-productivity link have been conducted using new internationally harmonized survey data, known in Europe as Community Innovation Survey (CIS). Mainly due to confidentiality reasons cross-country comparisons of CIS data are still rare. The contribution of this paper is its unique approach of pooling original firm observations from Germany and Sweden. Applying a knowledge production function that gives the relationship between innovation input, innovation output and productivity, we find to a very large extent a common cross-country story for knowledge intensive manufacturing firms. Some interesting country-specific effects are reported as well.

  • Avatar-based innovation : How avatars experience co-creation projects in Second Life
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 9:2, s. 21-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Practical examples as well as research highlight the potential of virtual worlds for new product development especially for utilizing the innovative capabilities and knowledge of consumers and consumer communities. However, most of the observed and often cited virtual new product development examples failed or could have done better. One of the main challenges of virtual product development projects in virtual worlds such as Second Life (SL) face, is to attract participants and to motivate them to actively contribute to the project and share their ideas and knowledge with the company. Therefore, one of the most important research questions is to explore how avatar-based innovation projects should be designed in order to motivate consumers to engage in avatar-based innovation projects and actively contribute to the solution of the stated innovation quest. Based on a quantitative survey with avatars that participated in virtual cocreation projects, the article provides insights regarding compelling co-creation experiences in virtual worlds. This research presents empirically grounded insights regarding compelling co-creation experiences in virtual worlds. It extends theory about virtual new product development in virtual worlds and provides practical guidelines on how to successfully design virtual co-creation projects in virtual worlds.

  • Heuristics or experience-based techniques for making accounting judgments and learning
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Problems and Perspectives in Management. - Sumy : Business Perspectives Publishing Company. - 1810-5467. ; 11:3, s. 15-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to further the development of initial accounting for internally generated intangible assets, relevant to both academics and practitioners, examining what happens when accountants are given principles-based discretion. This paper draws on existing insights into heuristics or experience-based techniques for making accounting judgments. Knowledge about judgment under uncertainty, and the general framework offered by the heuristics and biases program in particular, forms the underlying logical structure. An interview study concerning initial accounting for internally generated intangible assets in the consumer goods and services sector provides the empirical base for the analysis and discussion. Identifying and recognizing internally generated intangible assets is a typical case of judgment under uncertainty. From an accounting point of view, it is vital that the judgments and intentions produced by System 1 can be modified or overridden by the deliberative operations of System 2, that is, that a direct interrelationship exists between intuition and reasoning. This indicates that heuristics are experience-based, which makes it interesting to study accounting judgments from a heuristics and biases perspective. By studying the underlying processes on which accounting judgments are founded, we can learn more about how accountants reason in relation to various accounting standards given different economic situations. One of the practical implications of this study is that accountants can gain a better understanding of how to avoid judgmental biases when tackling complex accounting problems, such as accounting for internally generated intangible assets. This paper takes a different view on heuristics and biases related to accounting judgments from that of previous research in that the focus is primarily on the use and design of heuristics and biases and to a lesser extent on departures from normative decision-making behavior.

  • Entrepreneurial orientation, control aversion and performance in SMEs : The contribution of equity investors
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - : LLC CPC Business Perspectives. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 14:3, s. 55-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurial orientation is a concept that captures the importance of how and why certain individuals decide to take higher risks than the average small business owner so as to increase their return on assets deployed. Entrepreneurial orientation is linked to the concept of control aversion, which is used to explain why certain individuals refrain from using external financing to expand their firms. Control aversion suggests that most small business owners prefer to maintain total control rather than invite in the potentially disruptive influence of an external owner/investor. This study combines these two concepts in an attempt to introduce financing and investors into the discussion of entrepreneurial orientation and performance. Equity investors are shown to have a major influence on entrepreneurial performance, because business owners with an entrepreneurial orientation gain substantially from interaction with investors through the transfer of knowledge. The model was tested with a LInear Structural RELations (LISREL) analysis on a sample of 459 Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises.

  • Boosting Innovation and Knowledge through Delocalization : Market Intelligence at Trade Shows
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - Sumy, Ukraine : Sumy State University and "Business Perspectives" Publishing Company. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 8:3, s. 200-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trade shows have consistently been neglected in marketing research, especially the gathering of market information, what is studied under Market Intelligence and directly related to a company’s Knowledge and Innovation. A major reason is that the marketing discipline traditionally has had a strong focus on customers instead of competitors and influencers. In this article we show how the field of Competitive Intelligence is a useful part of the company’s Integrated Marketing Communications. Based on a qualitative method encompassing a case study and exploratory research we followed, coached and traveled with two different groups of companies to major International Trade shows. Based on the information gathered a division into three areas of Intelligence was useful. These were intelligence about products, the booths and the behavior in the booths. For each group a number of Key Intelligence Topics and a set of specific research methods were identified which can make the Market Intelligence process more efficient. We explain why Exhibits or trade shows have much in common with Event Marketing and could be considered a part of the latter.

  • Cybernization management in the cyber world : A new management perspective
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - : Business Perspectives. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 6:1, s. 114-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a part of a long-term research effort, the ultimate objective of which is to offer the ways to integrate computer-based technology (CBT) including information and communication technology (ICT) and inter- and intraorganizational functions and relationships from a holistic e.Total Relationship Management perspective embedding the physical and cyber worlds. It is a conceptual study based on the recent developments of ICT, inter-firm relationship management: economic (transaction costs economics), socio-psychological (social exchange, inter-organization, and industrial network).A new concept and model of Cybernization Management have been developed and discussed. Some general propositions are presented and some synergy effects of utilizing the e.TRM are highlighted. The paper suggests how these approaches can add an impetus to successful management issues as a powerful competitive weapon in connecting the physical world with the cyber space. The area of cybernization of an organization is so vast that it is impossible to get to the desired level of detail regarding every aspect of the same even at a conceptual level. There is a need to operationalize the new developed concepts. It is hoped, however, that the model and the ideas presented here will serve as a useful starting point for several related discussions and research. This paper provides a model for Cybernity that accommodates the major manifestations of cybernization of an organization and could potentially provide the means to link diverse literature that is available in this area. It does so by proposing that it is important to recognize the direction and corner stones of cybernity. It highlights the need to delineate the operational and tactical issues relating to cybernity from the strategic use of cyberspace.
