  • War, Solidarity, and Resilience : Some Reflections from Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Topos. Journal for philosophy and cultural studies. - Vilnius : European Humanities University. - 1815-0047 .- 2538-886X. ; 2:42, s. 42-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the essay, the author shares her reflections on the Russian fullfledged invasion of Ukraine from the position of a scholar who for many years has been working and living outside Ukraine. The essay presents the reactions of non-Ukrainian scholars and students to the war. The author questions the knowledge produced under the influences of quasi-colonial stereotypes, which is revealed through the discourses of dialogue and reconciliation that lack a deeper understanding of the Ukrainian context. The article also approaches the issue of the resilience of Ukrainian society that despite the hardships of war continues not only to fight but also to dream and work for its presence and future.

  • Phenomenology and Embryo Ethics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Topos: Journal for Philosophy and Cultural Studies. - Vilnius : European Humanities University. - 1815-0047 .- 2538-886X. ; :1, s. 11-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, a phenomenological ontology concerning in vitro embryos is developed and defended, exploring the practical implications for reproductive medical technologies. This phenomenological alternative, in comparison with other positions in bioethics, firmly takes on-board the dangers of reification of human life by advancements of medical science. The in vitro embryo is clearly not a human person, but neither is it a lump of human cells, merely. The phenomenologist should consider the embryo to be a potential human person, but also acknowledge the changes in basic ontology brought about by medical technologies when producing embryos in the laboratory. In vitro embryos, however they are made, still have a significant symbolic standing that demands respect on the strength of their biological potentiality. Such a standing could be reflected in practice by limiting the use of IVF embryos to fields of research that seek cures for severe human diseases and which cannot be pursued by other means, and by forbidding the buying and selling of human embryos. Regarding the future possibilities of not only selecting but also manipulating the genes of embryos in IVF by way of CRISPR/Cas and other technologies, the phenomenological view stresses that such interventions should not move beyond de-selecting or deleting genes that carry severe risks for developing painful and debilitating diseases. Abstaining from choosing the characteristics of children-to-be beyond the measures taken to save them from considerable, unnecessary suffering is ultimately a matter of avoiding to instrumentalize the practice of procreation. In contrast to an order-and-delivery service, the relationship between parents and their children should be thought of as an empathic and dialogic relation. At stake in this relation is not only the understanding and avoidance of unnecessary suffering but also the possibilities of human ourishing. Child-rearing should respond to the personal characteristics that a child, from birth onwards, already embodies and expresses, and continually support and guide the child’s possibilities to develop these characteristics in a successful way.

  • UKRAINIAN REFUGEES IN SCANDINAVIA, OR HOW TO TALK ABOUT MIGRATION WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT IT
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Topos. - 1815-0047. ; 2022:2, s. 31-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reaction to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 indicated a multiplicity of standpoints, different positionalities, and power asymmetries, in particular in the Western academy. Represen-tatives of the mainstream migration research centres as well as individual researchers, while recognising the importance of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and with Ukrainian scholars, emphasised simultaneously that all other migrants around the world should get help from the EU governments on the same level as Ukrainian war refugees. Moreover, the majority of published research articles (by November 2022) in Migration Studies argue that non-Western, but white and Christian Ukrainians have been accepted in a much better way than non-white migrants from African and Middle Eastern countries who experienced much harder obstacles trying to enter Europe and that therefore, this particularly welcoming reception of Ukrainians in the EU is direct evidence of racism. Such hegemonic framing overshadows and sidelines studies of the everyday experiences of Ukrainian refugees and the multiple challenges they have been facing in the EU, where the mid-and long-term prospects of their integration remain questionable.

  • Belarusian social and cultural anthropology in times of catastrophes and drastic changes : a roundtable
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Topos. Journal for philosophy and cultural studies. - : European Humanities University. - 1815-0047. ; :2, s. 56-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The last two years in Belarus were marked by a string of catastrophic events and profound changes: protests of 2020, unprecedented political repressions and involuntary emigration on a mass level, the refugee crisis of 2021 at the Belarus — EU border, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in which Belarus partakes. Those events fundamentally reshape the lives and professional practices of social anthropologists and ethnologists. The aim of the roundtable in Kaunas at the 10th Congress of Belarusian studies was to voice the experiences of anthropologists as practicing researchers and private persons. The general directions of reflection included the problematic nature of the ethnographic method in terms of access to the field in Belarus; validity of professional expertise and engagement; researcher’s positionality within the unfolding calamity; the matters of disciplinary reproduction along the lines of geopolitical fissures.
