- In this work we introduce the combinatory use of Harmony Search (HS) with Optimal Computing Budget Allocation (OCBA) as a means to tackle noisy optimization situations as those that occur during the execution of Discrete Event Systems (DES) for modeling complex systems. The OCBA procedure is employed for the exclusion of the worst harmony during the memory updating process in order to minimize the computational cost and at the same time retain a pool of promising solutions. The proposed hybrid approach is tested on real valued test functions as a proof of concept and the results are promising in case of small computational budgets.

State of Software Risk Management Practice

- Despite the fact that risk management has beenwith us for some time, little has been reported about itsindustrial status, its co-existence with the development models,and its compliance to standard risk management processmodels. In this paper, we explore the domain of riskmanagement practice within 37 software organizations. We dothis by first comparing the industrial status against a processmodel that is synthesized from a set of current standard riskmanagement process models. We then investigate how thecompanies studied have integrated their risk management withsoftware development. Regarding the state of industrial riskmanagement practice, our results show that there are somediscrepancies between the industrial practice and the standardmodels studied. The industrial organizations have notimplemented all the important activities as prescribed by thestandard models. The standard models, on the other hand, havefailed to identify some of the important risk management phasesand activities. Hence, this paper suggests a list of issues thatneed be addressed in both the standards and the industry.Regarding the integration practice, our results recognize thatprocess integration in this domain is still in its infancy.

- This paper presents a study focusing on deviations from normative behavior in risk elicitation. Such deviations haveimplications on the process of eliciting reliable input data in applications of decision analysis. No existing elicitation method seems to be universally useful based on the findings made in this study. Since people obviously do not act in accordance with the normative rules, and different choice strategies have been identified, a prescriptive approach with individual assistance of the decision makers in the elicitation process thus seems to benecessary.
