  • Design as Information : How May Design and Information Relate?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Design Principles and Practices. - : Common Ground Publishing. - 1833-1874. ; 3:4, s. 161-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to Pettersson, design may be a process and/or the result of the process, a product. The area of design is multidisciplinary and involves several notions. One is in the subject field of Information Design, which includes language, communication, art, cognition and information science. These disciplines refer to the concept of information differently. There is therefore a need for a fruitful theory of information, terms and concepts in order to enrich the reasoning of design as information. Bates presents a definition of information and several fundamental information forms. There, she offers a theoretical framework, the main core of which is that information may take different forms related to architecture, graphic design, interior design, and interface design, etc. Such a framework may contribute to understanding the meaning of design. Bates’ theory is applied in a study involving spatial design in industrial environments. The conclusions of the study illustrates how design and information relate to a design process and a design product that enriches the understanding of the meaning of design.

  • Assessing the value of product service systems alternatives : a conceptual framework
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Design Principles and Practices. - 1833-1874. ; 5:5, s. 655-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper proposes a conceptual framework, linking value-oriented criteria, simulation approaches and knowledge sources, to support the value-driven assessment of Product/Service Systems in the preliminary product development phase. The paper describes the peculiarities of the Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problem in the PSS domain, identifying relevant categories of criteria to guide the preliminary value assessment of Product/Service Systems. Each criteria has been analyzed and linked to the appropriate simulation method, and each method has been further associated to people/roles in the Virtual Enterprise who might possess relevant knowledge to populate the models. The value assessment of an aircraft engine component has been used as case study for the definition of the value attributes. The list of generic value-related criteria, coupled with the respective simulation approaches has to be considered the main result of the paper.

  • Interactive Textile Expressions in Spatial Design : Architecture as Synesthetic Expression
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Design Principles and Practices. - : Common Ground Publishing. - 1833-1874. ; 4:2, s. 11-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extending the role of the surface from just an embellishment of the tectonics to communicative devices challenges the traditional design process in architecture. Through a series of design examples, the paper presents a research program that introduces and discusses a new grammar of ornamentation generated by the relation between surface expression and the act of use in the build space. Projects such as Knitted light, Touching loops, Designing with heat and Tactile glow are examples meant to analyze the relation between material, space, time and interaction expression through the design of three dimensional knitted interactive textile structures. The design process joins together different design fields such as architectural, textile and interaction design in order to re-define the relation between human being and space. The design process starts with the microstructure of the textile element and ends with the space design using the interaction design as a tool to relate the human presence to space. The paper aims to propose new interactive spatial expressions created by the integration of computational technology into soft interactive textile surfaces that enable the user to perceive the complexity of the architectural space through a synesthetic perception, that exceeds the limits of visuality.

  • Scholarly Personal Narrative in Graphic Design Research : Exploring the Utility of SPN as a Method for Graphic Design Researchers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Design Principles and Practices. - 1833-1874. ; 17:1, s. 41-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the potential applications of Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) as a method in graphic design research. The inspiration for the article stems from the author’s own experiences with reading and writing academic texts in a relatively new field of research. The tendency towards inaccessibility and complexity in scholarly writing poses a risk of erecting barriers to understanding, hindering the effective dissemination of knowledge. This is counterintuitive to graphic designers, who strive to facilitate the communication of information through their designs. Therefore, the primary objective of this article is to explore the possibilities of cultivating a writing style that encourages researchers to produce more accessible texts and incorporate their personal experiences into their work. The article suggests that there is value in further investigating the potential benefits SPN may offer to graphic design students as well as researchers. It holds promise as a method that could positively contribute to the development of inclusive and accessible writing styles and research approaches within the field.

  • On the Death of Architectural Theory and Other Spectres
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Design Principles and Practices: An International Journal. - 1833-1874. ; 3:2, s. 113-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relevance and use of theory when approaching the discipline of architecture would appear to have become eclipsed by the excitement associated with increasingly well-established digital design techniques and technologies. Digital design, especially where it calls forth the evocative term, emergence, admits a renewed fascination in nature whereby genetic algorithmic models are appropriated from mathematics and biological science and deployed in novel design processes. One of the results of this shift in emphasis is the apparent obsolescence of theory: we no longer need to reflect upon, or intellectually engage in what we are doing. If we are to believe Sarah Whiting, Rob Somol, as well as Michael Speaks, then we have entered a ‘post-critical’ era in which the negative critical work of theory, and its burdensome emphasis on textual analysis and dialectics, can be displaced with a ‘projective’, ‘performative’, ‘cool’ and ‘atmospheric’ architecture. Reinhold Martin, another American architect and theorist, weighs in against the ‘post-critical’ players and asks by what criteria they hope their work will be judged. Certainly it would appear that there is a slippery slide into habit, opinion and cliché, and even worse, a loss of political engagement that attends the ‘post-critical’ aspiration to be cool and easy, to resist resistance, and avoid dissent. Jeffrey Kipnis, in turn, asks whether there is not the glimmer of a possibility of a new ‘metacritical’ discourse that is orientated around affect, which inevitably returns us to the work of such philosophers and theorists as Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This paper will map a recent history that marks the decline of theory and the rise of cool digital techniques and technologies and ask what is at stake with respect to how architecture can continue to speak for itself and what risks are posed in the forgetting of architectural theory.

  • Idea Exchange and Shared Understanding : Tools Stimulating Thought and Conveying Ideas
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Design principles and practices: An international journal. - 1833-1874. ; 5:4, s. 487-502
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The topic of this paper is the use of sketching when exchanging shape visions. Attaining a shared understanding in a collaborative design project is examined. The interaction acts of an industrial design team at a renowned design firm in Stockholm are analyzed, as well as where the idea development session is situated. The interaction in itself could function as the prevalent means of describing and mediating creative idea development in groups. The basic intent of bringing together individuals who hold divergent notions is the creative tension this meeting may bring forth. There seems to be an inevitable gap between designers' ways of forming and expressing opinions concerning aesthetic ideas and their use of verbal language. The concepts 'verbal overshadowing' and 'figurative arguing' are considered, as well as 'the power of the board'. These phenomena influence the session's creative potential. The interpretation of the different types of sketches used by the team is focused on, as a means of understanding the significance of each type and the impact on idea development. Based on this study, several recommendations for establishing effective idea exchange and supporting evolving shared understanding (i.e., a group idea) are presented.
