  • Perceptions of gay, lesbian, and heterosexual domestic violence among undergraduates in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Conflict and Violence. - 1864-1385. ; 7:2, s. 249-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental study of perceptions about gay, lesbian, and heterosexual domestic violence in Sweden. Undergraduate students (N = 1009) read one of eight fictitious scenarios of domestic violence in married couple relationships, where sexual orientation, sex of victim and batterer, and severity of violence were varied. Perceptions of seriousness of the described incident and attitudes toward women, gays and lesbians were measured. Domestic violence was perceived as more serious in cases where: the respondent was a woman, the batterer was a man, the victim was a woman, or the battering was severe. Wife-battering in a heterosexual relationship was considered the most serious case in both the less and more severe battering scenario. Where battering was less severe, domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships was perceived as more serious than heterosexual husband-battering; this difference disappeared in the severe battering scenario. Negative attitudes toward gays, lesbians, and women were associated with less concern about domestic violence in all types of relationships. The findings suggest that stereotypes about gays, lesbians, and women affect perceptions of domestic violence, but mainly when violence is less severe.

  • Clinical Significance of Parent Training for Children with Conduct Problems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Conflict and Violence. - 1864-1385. ; 6:2, s. 187-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While there is a strong evidence base for behavioral parent training in the treatment ofchild conduct problems, the clinical impact is less well known. Meta-analyses report effect sizes in the medium range, but the common practice of reporting "small," "medium," and "large" effects can be misleading and difficult to understand for practitioners and clients. There is a need for more research addressing the clinical significance of behavioral parent training, which would help to bridge the gap between research and practice. In the first part of this report, a reanalysis in termsof clinical significance of two outcome studies published by the authors was conducted. In the second part, the results from the first part were compared to six outcome studies published by other authors. The median number needed to treat across studies was five, which means that forevery five treated children, one shows reliable change and moves from the dysfunctional to the functional population.

  • "They Think We Are a Threat to Their Culture" : Meta-Cultural Threat Fuels Willingness and Endorsement of Extremist Violence against the Cultural Outgroup
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Conflict and Violence. - : INST INTERDISCIPLINARY RES. - 1864-1385. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Far-right political parties in Europe regularly portray Muslims and Islam as backward and a symbolic threat to secular and/or Christian European culture. Similarly, Islamist groups regularly portray Westerners and Western culture as decadent and a symbolic threat to Islam. Here, we present experimental evidence that meta-cultural threat - information that members of an outgroup perceive one's own culture as a symbolic threat to their culture - increases intention and endorsement of political violence against that outgroup. We tested this in three experimental studies among Muslims and non-Muslims in Scandinavia. In Studies 1 and 2, we experimentally manipulated whether the dominant majority group was portrayed as seeing Muslim culture and lifestyle as backward and incompatible with their own culture. These portrayals increased the endorsement of extremist violence against the West and violent behavioural intentions among Muslims living in Denmark and Sweden. Study 3 used a similar paradigm among non-Muslim Danes and demonstrated that learning about Muslims portraying the non-Muslim Danish in-group as a threat increased endorsement of ethnic persecution of Muslims, conceptually replicating the general effect that meta-cultural threat fuels endorsement of extremist violence among both majority and minority groups.

  • Online Extremism : Research Trends in Internet Activism, Radicalization, and Counter-Strategies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Conflict and Violence. - 1864-1385. ; 14:2, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reviews the academic literature on how and for what purposes violent extremists use the Internet, at both an individual and organizational level. After defining key concepts like extremism, cyber-terrorism and online radicalization, it provides an overview of the virtual extremist landscape, tracking its evolution from static websites and password-protected forums to mainstream social media and encrypted messaging apps. The reasons why violent extremist organizations use online tools are identified and evaluated, touching on propaganda, recruitment, logistics, funding, and hacking. After this, the article turns to the ways violent extremist individuals use the Internet, discussing its role as a facilitator for socialization and learning. The review concludes by considering the emergent literature on how violent extremism is being countered online, touching on both defensive and offensive measures.
